Redd survey data of Chinook salmon in the Feather River

Since 2014, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has conducted annual Chinook salmon redd surveys. The objective of this data collection effort is to quantify and understand potential shits in redd distribution and potential habitat differences between historic and restored sites. The redd surveys are conducted in the uppermost 16 miles of the lower Feather River though have been concentrated in the uppermost two miles of the lower Feather River in, and adjacent to the Gravel Supplementation Areas (GSAs). Redd surveys are conducted less frequently in the 14 miles downstream of the GSAs. Surveys typically begin in mid-September at the onset of spawning and generally conclude at the end of November. This dataset represents an extensive time series that could be used to identify habitat conditions where Chinook salmon spawn, how these conditions have changed over time, especially in areas where restoration has occurred. These data were published to support the Healthy Rivers and Landscapes Program.

Pika habitat occupancy survey data for Niwot Ridge and Green Lakes Valley, 2016 - ongoing

Long-term monitoring of habitat occupancy can reveal patterns of habitat use, population dynamics, and factors controlling species distribution. The American pika (Ochotona princeps), a small mammal found in rocky habitats throughout western North America, has been targeted for occupancy studies due to its relatively conspicuous behavior and its unusual adaptations for surviving long, cold winters without hibernation. These adaptations include an unusually high resting metabolic rate and maintenance of body temperatures near the lethal maximum for this species, which would appear to compromise the pika's ability to survive warmer summers. Recent monitoring as well as projections based on future climate scenarios have suggested this species is experiencing a period of range retraction due to warming summers and/or loss of insulating winter snow cover. Niwot Ridge is situated ideally to test competing hypotheses about the trajectory and drivers of pika range shift. The pika is still common throughout the Colorado Rockies, but published models differ markedly regarding projections of the pika’s future distribution in this region. Niwot Ridge has experienced warmer summers as well as shorter periods of insulating snow cover in recent years, and there is evidence that pikas are now less common than they once were in at least one area on the ridge. This study is designed to provide robust data on pika population trends through long-term monitoring of occupancy in a spatially balanced random sample of pika habitat patches centered on Niwot Ridge. Survey plots (n = 72) were selected according to a Generalized Random-Tessellation Stratified (GRTS) algorithm, stratified dichotomously by elevation, average annual snow accumulation (SWE), and probabilities of pika occurrence based on previous data. Survey data on attitudes towards salmon aquaculture industry in Norway, Iceland, and Tasmania (AU)

<p>The following data is from an online survey conducted in Norway, Tasmania (Australia), and Iceland. Respondents were recruited by survey companies that distributed e-mail invitations to their panels. A minimum respondent quotas was established for each region, with individuals under the age of 18 being exluded from participating in the survey. The dataset consists of a total of 2085 respondents, comprising 1183 participants from Norway, 406 from Tasmania, and 496 from Iceland. Questions were presented in their respective native language, namely Norwegian, English, and Icelandic.</p> <p>This survey data encompasses various aspects of perceptions of salmon aquaculture industry. Data was generated by the SoLic (Social License to operate for aquaculture) project (2019 - 2022), and funded by The Research Council of Norway (no. 295114). The survey was designed by the SoLic project group.&nbsp;</p> <p>The data and supplementary material is divided in 3 files:</p> <p>The raw survey data in .csv file format (Dataset Solic_2085 respondents.csv). The data file contains 71 variables and data from each of the 2085 respondents. Blank entries in the dataset indicate either a lack of response from the respondents or that specific questions were not applicable to certain respondents (questions exclusively posed to respondents in one country).</p> <p>Overview of survey questions and answer options (Survey.doc). The survey encompassed 28 questions related to the aquaculture industry, along with demographics, respondents&rsquo; knowledge of industry, trust in governance system, and environmental concerns. Some demographic variables were sourced from the existing panel data, while others were provided to respondents for their input.</p> <p>The codebook (Codebook.doc). The codebook provides explanations and details regarding all variables included in the survey data file. It includes coding information for each survey question, response options provided in the raw data, and further clarifies the purpose and origin of variables computed by the research group (e.g., variable on aquaculture municipality) or the survey company (e.g., weight variables for data from Norway and Iceland). When used in conjunction with the raw data, this codebook serves as a valuable guide for navigating the dataset.&nbsp;</p>

Lower American River steelhead spawning surveys (Chinook and lamprey data included), California, 2002 to 2025

Steelhead spawning surveys have been conducted on the Lower American River (LAR) for the years 2002-2005, 2007, and 2009-2025. These surveys in conjunction with annual escapement estimates to Nimbus Fish Hatchery, are used to provide a yearly index of in-river and over all spawning abundance. Reclamation’s mission is to manage, develop and protect water and related resources in an environmentally and economically sound manner in the interest of the American people. In the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) most recent biological opinion (2009), the presence of dams was identified as the most influential stressor to steelhead on the American River because it blocks passage to historic spawning and rearing habitat. Thus, Reclamation is required to monitor the effects of flow regulation by dams on the steelhead life stages present in the river system. Congruently, Reclamation has committed to significant restoration actions including salmonid spawning and rearing habitat rehabilitation on the Lower American River, which also require accurate and robust monitoring. These surveys support the mission and monitoring requirements of Reclamation by collecting the spawning data required to effectively conduct analyses of the effects of regulating Folsom and Nimbus dams on this federally listed species’ critical life stage development and support operational decision making.

Survey of small mammals using trapping data on all Virginia Coast Reserve barrier islands south of Parramore Island (inclusive) 1975-1978

During 1975 and 1977 live-trapping surveys of small-mammals of the Virginia Barrier Islands were conducted. Primary species encountered were Oryzomys palustris, Mus musculus, Micrutus pennsylvanicus, Rattus norvegicus, Cryptotis parva, and Peromyscus leucopus. Data is presented as primary trapping records giving the date of capture, island, species, sex and reproductive condition of the captured animal. Each animal was tagged to allow individual identification upon recapture. Each island was typically trapped for 8 days in two 4-day sessions.

EOSC Task Force on FAIR Metrics and Data Quality: FAIR Evaluation community survey 2023

<p>The EOSC-A FAIR Metrics and Data Quality Task Force (TF) supported the European Open Science Cloud Association (EOSC-A) by providing strategic directions on FAIRness (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) and data quality. The Task Force conducted a survey&nbsp;using the <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/">EUsurvey tool</a> between 15.11.2022 and 18.01.2023, targeting both developers and users of FAIR assessment tools. The survey aimed at supporting the harmonisation of FAIR assessments, in terms of what it evaluated and how, across existing (and future) tools and services, as well as explore if and how a community-driven governance on these FAIR assessments would look like. The survey received 78 responses, mainly from academia, representing various domains and organisational roles. This is the anonymised survey dataset in csv format; most open-ended answers have been dropped. The codebook contains variable names, labels, and frequencies.</p>

Survey Data on Current Open Access Terms and Future Trends (2024)

<p><strong>Description:</strong><br>This dataset contains the analysis, codebook, and raw survey data from the 2024 survey <em>"Open Access &ndash; Current Terms and Future Areas of Focus"</em>. The survey aimed to gather perspectives from Open Access experts in the German-speaking region, focusing on the evaluation of current Open Access terminology, concepts, and emerging trends.</p> <p>The survey highlights how Open Access terminology has evolved over the past two decades and explores current perceptions regarding key terms in the Open Access discourse, as well as the anticipated future developments in this field. Data for The UNCOVER Survey: A First-Look HST+JWST Catalog of Galaxy Redshifts and Stellar Populations Properties Spanning 0.2 ≲ z ≲ 15

<p>The recent UNCOVER survey with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) exploits the nearby cluster Abell 2744 to create the deepest view of our universe to date by leveraging strong gravitational lensing. In this work, we perform photometric fitting of more than 50,000 robustly detected sources out to z ~ 15. We show the redshift evolution of stellar ages, star formation rates, and rest-frame colors across the full range of&nbsp;0.2 &lt; z &lt; 15.&nbsp;The galaxy properties are inferred using the Prospector&nbsp;Bayesian inference framework using informative Prospector-beta&nbsp;priors on masses and star formation histories to produce joint redshift and stellar populations posteriors, and additionally lensing magnification is performed on-the-fly to ensure consistency with the scale-dependent priors. We show that this approach produces excellent photometric redshifts with NMAD&nbsp;~&nbsp;0.03, of a similar quality to the established photometric redshift code EAzY. In line with the open-source scientific objective of the Treasury survey, we publicly release the stellar populations catalog with this paper, derived from the photometric catalog adapting aperture sizes based on source profiles. This release includes posterior moments, maximum-likelihood spectra, star-formation histories, and full posterior distributions, offering a rich data set to explore the processes governing galaxy formation and evolution over a parameter space now accessible by JWST.</p>

Ten years (2013-2023) of fish assemblage data collected seasonally with underwater visual surveys on paired artificial and natural reefs

<p>The study of assembly patterns and dynamics of organisms has long remained a foundational theme in ecology. Further, the relationship between assemblages and different habitats can provide important insight on ecological processes and guide management and conservation efforts (e.g., restoration, protected areas). We conducted underwater visual surveys of reef fish assemblages at 14 sites in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, including eight that were paired artificial and natural reefs. By using a paired design, we controlled biotic (e.g., larval supply), abiotic (e.g., depth), and socio variables (e.g., fishing access) to isolate the effect of reef type. Trained scientific SCUBA divers with extensive experience with reef fishes from the broader tropical western Atlantic region conducted two to four 10-minute stationary surveys on the paired reefs each season (i.e., calendar quarters) for 10 years from spring 2013 to spring 2023. We also surveyed six additional artificial reefs from winter 2020 to spring 2023 that lacked natural reef pairs. During each survey, the divers identified and estimated the total lengths of all taxa<strong> </strong>observed within an imaginary cylinder around them. The imaginary cylinders had a radius up to 7.5 meters (depending on horizontal visibility) and extended from the seafloor to the highest visible water above the diver. During the period of study, we conducted a total of 1,349 surveys and counted 544,736 fish that represented 171 taxa (most at the species level). Analyses of these data have revealed habitat-specific heterogeneity of the fish assemblages at both taxonomic and functional trait levels, the importance of herbivory in structuring the benthos, and socio-ecological interactions in the system, among other findings. These data may be useful for other researchers interested in patterns and dynamics of populations and communities, functional traits, taxa-habitat relationships, and for parameterizing statistical, joint distribution, metacommunity, and ecosystem models. In addition, because many of the observed taxa<strong> </strong>are of management concern, they may be useful for researchers interested in fisheries science. <p>This survey data includes the responsed from a survey questionnaire which was used to collect information on smart home technologies and time of use of electric appliances in Danish households. The survey covers themes like adoption and use ofhousehold appliances, households&rsquo; division of everyday chores, timing of everyday activities, and everyday flexibility.</p> <p>The purpose of this survey is to gather information about Danish households and their everyday practices and flexibility related to electricity use. The intention is to combine questions from the survey with real time data of electricity consumption at household level with a time resolution of few minutes, and to do so for a large representative population. However, the electricity consumption is not allowed to share publicly, and therefore not included in this data upload.&nbsp;</p> <p>The survey includes questions of socio-economic factors.</p> <p>The questionnaire was distributed in Danish but was developed in and translated from English because ofinternational cooperation.</p> <p>The survey was developed under the project eCAPE - New Energy Consumer Roles and Smart Technologies&ndash; Actors, Practices and Equality. Marine magnetic anomaly data from high resolution surveys off the SW Portuguese coast

<p>This dataset contains <strong>magnetic anomaly grids</strong> that&nbsp;result from the full processing of marine magnetic data collected off&nbsp;the SW Portuguese coast&nbsp;between 2014 and 2019. A total area of ~4400 km<sup>2</sup> was surveyed with&nbsp;average line spacing of 1 nautic mile. Wildflower survey data from French Broad River Basin, North Carolina, 2014

This dataset includes measures of the abundance of blooming wildflowers from field surveys conducted in the French Broad River Basin in western North Carolina, USA. This basin is in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Data were collected to examine the spatial and seasonal supply of biodiversity-based cultural ecosystem services (CES), in this case, nature study by viewing wildflowers. The data includes blooming species observed at 69 sites on public and private lands during the period 2014-04-01 to 2014-08-08. Flower species were characterized as charismatic if represented in tourism websites. Environmental data for 56 sites are provided: elevation, early season precipitation, mean summer temperature, land cover diversity, tree cover, vegetation structural diversity, vegetation annual productivity, and building density at local and landscape scales. Graves et al. (2017, doi: 10.1007/s10980-016-0452-0) used these data to analyze seasonal shifts in supply of floral resources and how those shifts impacted public access to projected resource hotspots. Relationships between landscape gradients, biodiversity, and ecosystem service supply varied seasonally, and the analysis identified CES hotspots otherwise obscured by simple proxies. Landscape models of biodiversity-based cultural ecosystem services should include seasonal dynamics of biotic communities to avoid under- or over-emphasizing the importance of specific locations in ecosystem service assessments.

Rabbit survey data on creosotebush and grassland routes from the long-term Small Mammal Exclusion Study at Jornada Basin LTER, 1996-ongoing

This data package contains rabbit survey data from grassland and creosote shrubland habitats on Jornada Experimental Range (JER) and Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) lands. Two survey routes were established along Jornada Basin roads in 1996; one in black grama grassland and the other in creosotebush shrubland. Quarterly surveys are conducted on these roads at or near the full moon to measure the density of rabbits in the two vegetation types. Each route is about 6 miles long. Parallel studies were established at the Sevilleta LTER site (New Mexico, USA) and Mapimi Biosphere Reserve (Durango, Mexico). Data collection began in April 1996 and includes date and time lagomorphs are spotted, species identification, habitat type, distance/direction from vehicle, and comments on the weather, moon, and anything unusual. This study is ongoing with new data collected quarterly.

Grasshopper survey and substrate utilization data at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1983 to 1985

This dataset contains grasshopper occurrence observations sampled from 9 plots on the east bajada of the Dona Ana Mountains at the Jornada Basin LTER site from 1983 to 1985. Three plots were situated on the bajada parallel to and 200 m south of the LTER-I transect. Two additional sets of three plots were located 5 km and 10 km south of the LTER transect. Each plot is composed of two 50 meter belt transects, each divided into ten 5-square-meter quadrats. Grasshoppers were visually sampled in each quadrat/plot, once in May, July and September, in 1983, 1984 and 1985. Each individual grasshopper, its age, sex and the substrate it was observed on, are recorded as observations in the dataset. This study is complete.

Herbaceous vegetation size and cover data in grasshopper survey quadrats at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1984 to 1985

This dataset contains annual herbaceous plant data collected in association with grasshopper surveys during 1984 and 1985 as part of the Jornada Basin LTER program. Annual herbaceous plant data was collected from Jornada grasshopper plots on the east bajada of the Dona Ana Mts. Three plots were situated on the bajada parallel to and 200 m south of the LTER-I transect. Two additional sets of three plots were located 5 km and 10 km south of the LTER transect. Each plot is composed of two 50 m belt transects, each divided into ten 5-meter-squared quadrats. Annual plants were measured in the northeast 1 square meter of each quadrat. All individuals of each species were counted and measured. A mean diameter, height, and the total number of individuals per 1-square-meter quadrat were recorded. Measurements were taken in May, July, and September of 1984, and in May and September of 1985. This dataset consists of the date of collection, plot number, transect number, quadrat number, plant species code, mean plant diameter, and mean plant height. This dataset is complete.

The Eastern Lake Survey-Phase I (ELS-I), conducted in the fall of 1984, was the first part of a long-term effort by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency known as the National Surface Water Survey. It was designed to synoptically quantify the acid-base status of surface waters in the United States in areas expected to exhibit low buffering capacity. The effort was in support of the National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program (NAPAP). The survey involved a three-month field effort in which 1612 probability sample lakes and 186 special interest lakes in the northeast, southeast, and upper midwest regions of the United States were sampled. Survey of pond habitats and aquatic diversity of Madison, Wisconsin from May to Aug 2019 and 2020 Data Set

1) Urbanization may lead to changes in local richness (alpha diversity) or in community composition (beta diversity), although the direction of change can be challenging to predict. For instance, introduced species may offset the loss of native specialist taxa, leading to no change in alpha diversity in urban areas, but decreased beta diversity (i.e., more homogenous community structure). Alternatively, because urban areas can have low connectivity and high environmental heterogeneity between sites, they may support distinct communities from one another over small geographic distances. 2) Wetlands and ponds provide critical ecosystem services and support diverse communities, making them important systems in which to understand consequences of urbanization. To determine how urban development shapes pond community structure, we surveyed 68 ponds around Madison, Wisconsin, USA, which were classified as urban, greenspace, or rural based on surrounding land use. We evaluated the influence of local abiotic factors, presence of nonnative fishes, and landscape characteristics on alpha diversity of aquatic plants, macroinvertebrates, and vertebrates. We also analyzed whether surrounding land cover was associated with changes in community composition and/or the presence of specific taxa. 3) We found a 23% decrease in mean richness (alpha diversity) from rural to urban pond sites, and a 15% decrease in richness from rural to urban greenspace pond sites. Among landscape factors, observed pond richness was negatively correlated with adjacent developed land and mowed lawns, as well as greater distances to other waterbodies. Among pond level factors, habitat complexity was associated with increased richness, while the presence of invasive fish was associated with decreased richness. 4) Beta diversity was relatively high for all ponds due to turnover in composition between sites.
