Total suspended solids from river, lagoon, and open ocean sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2022-ongoing

Multiple water types (river, lagoon, ocean) from the North Slope of Alaska and nearshore Beaufort Sea are sampled seasonally by the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER (BLE LTER) Core Program to investigate biogeochemical linkages between terrestrial, lagoon, and open ocean ecosystems. Water samples from multiple depths are collected during full ice cover (April), ice break-up (mid-June to early July), and open water (late July and August) periods for quantification of total suspended solids and total organic suspended solids. Concentrations are reported in milligrams per liter of filtered seawater (mg/L).

AquaMatch Total Suspended Solids from Water Quality Portal ~1970-2025

This dataset, “AquaMatch Total Suspended Solids Data from Water Quality Portal ~1970-2025”, is a component of a forthcoming update to AquaSat (Ross et al., 2019), AquaSat version 2 (“V2”). The overarching purpose of AquaSat V2 is to emphasize the individual parts of the AquaSat pipeline that make up the matchups between satellite and in-situ measurements. As such, we have greatly expanded and improved upon the AquaSat Total Suspended Solids ("TSS") dataset in two ways: First, we have incorporated additional recent in situ data beyond what was available at the publication of AquaSat. Second, we have created a data quality tiering system to provide end-users with more guidance on data usage. In this schema we have three tiers: restrictive data that are verifiably self-similar across organizations and time-periods and can be considered highly reliable; narrowed data that we have good reason to believe are self-similar, but for which we cannot verify full compatibility across data providers; and inclusive data, which are assumed to be reliable and are harmonized to our best ability given the information available from the data provider. We have also added flag columns to help users understand complexities of the available depth and field sampling data This dataset is a derived data product created using records downloaded from the Water Quality Portal (WQP) spanning January 10, 1970, to April 9, 2025 from the conterminous US, Alaska, Hawaii, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, United States Virgin Islands, Guam, and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. It contains 335,099 records from locations classified as estuaries; 411,979 records from locations classified as lakes, reservoirs, and impoundments; and 3,858,957 records from locations classified as streams. The WQP is a data warehouse for water-related data measured or observed within the United States and US Territories managed by the Environmental Protection Agency, United States Geological Survey, and the National

Stream sampling for total suspended solids (TSS), volatile suspended solids (VSS), and chemistry during storm events at the Coweeta LTER intensive and hillslope sites in Macon County, NC.

Stream storm samples were collected at 21 streams and rivers in Macon County, NC. Nine intensive sites were monitored in 2010-2011, nine hillslope sites were monitored in 2012-2013, and three river sites were monitored from 2010-2013. An ISCO water sampler was used to collect stream water samples during storm events. Water samples were analyzed at the Coweeta Analytical Lab.

Delta-X: Total Suspended Solids Concentration across MRD, LA, USA, 2021, Version 2

This dataset provides measurements of total suspended solids concentrations (TSS) of surface waters in the Atchafalaya River and Terrebonne Basins during the spring (2021-03-25 to 2021-04-22) and fall (2021-08-14 to 2021-09-24) field efforts by the Delta-X project. Field sampling was paused on August 25 and resumed on September 13, 2021, due to the landfall of Hurricane Ida on 2021-08-26 approximately 70 km east of the study site. Water quality changes caused by the hurricane were expected to be minimal. Samples were collected from ~0.5 m of surface in multiple channels of varying width (from a few meters to >100 m), near Delta-X intensive study sites, in open bays and lakes, and at few locations in the nearshore Gulf of Mexico. For each collection, the water sample volume was filtered, and the suspended particles retained on the filter were weighed after drying. The TSS concentration was calculated as the difference of the filter weight (before and after filtration) divided by the volume filtered.

Pre-Delta-X: AVIRIS-derived Total Suspended Solids Maps for MRD, LA, USA, 2015-2016

This dataset includes total suspended solids (TSS) at the water surface across the Atchafalaya and Terrebonne Basins in Southern Louisiana, USA, within the Mississippi River Delta (MRD) floodplain. AVIRIS-NG, the Next Generation Airborne Visible to Infrared Imaging Spectrometer, acquired data over the study area in 2015 and 2016. The remote imageries were combined with coincident field measurements to develop and validate spatially explicit estimates at 3.7-5.4 m resolution of the concentration (mg/L) of TSS.

Pre-Delta-X: Total Suspended Solids of Surface Water across MRD, LA, USA, 2015-2016

This dataset contains the total suspended solids (TSS) concentration of in situ water samples collected at selected sites across the Atchafalaya and Terrebonne Basins within the Mississippi River Delta (MRD) floodplain of coastal Louisiana, USA. The measurements were made during the Pre-Delta-X campaign in Spring 2015 and Fall 2016. The sampling sites spanned large and small channels at locations chosen to cover a representative range of suspended sediment concentrations from a variety of hydrodynamic and physical settings typically encountered across the basins. Water samples were collected by bottle just beneath the surface and stored on ice until filtering. The TSS concentration was calculated as the difference of the filter weight (before and after filtration) divided by the volume of sample filtered. Both TSS and in situ spectral reflectance measurements were collected at some sampling sites. Pre-Delta-X sampling focused on surface waters, where the TSS data are used as inputs for hydrodynamic models for sediment transport and to calibrate the model to convert AVIRIS-NG spectral reflectance measurements into TSS.
