<p>The unprecedented growth of the new middle classes in middle income developing countries implies a strong growth in both consumption and carbon emissions. "Non facciamo la guerra, combattiamo i rifiuti!"_FishArt.Participatory Art for environmental sustainability and aesthetic transformation of Anzio Fishermen's Harbour
<p>FishArt is a 10-month international project funded by the New European Bahahus Cross-KIC Connect 2024 written by and granted to Chiara Certoma’ (UniTo – now at UniRm1) and led by Laura Corazza (UniTo), in collaboration with Raw-News, Platoon and the fishermen cooperatives of Anzio (Rome, Italy). FishArt promotes a radically participatory art and education process supporting the requalification of the Fishermen’s Harbour in the coastal city of Anzio, Italy.As part of the FishArt project agenda, transect walks and educational training initiatives have been combined in a major event, strongly requested by the local community. The synergy between local institutions and international research aims to stimulate civic participation on the problem of marine pollution and the care of the coastal territory.The event “Let’s not make war, let’s fight waste!” is a civic initiative promoted by the Extraordinary Commission supported by the Environment Area of the Municipality of Anzio which aims to involve all the components of civil society for a collaborative cleaning of the beaches, transforming the celebrations of the Anzio/Nettuno landing into a moment of sharing and to raise awareness against marine pollution.</p>

Data and R-scripts for "Land-use trajectories for sustainable land system transformations: identifying leverage points in a global biodiversity hotspot" (V2)
<p>Sustainable land system transformations are necessary to avert biodiversity and climate collapse. However, it remains unclear where entry points for transformations exist in complex land systems. Here, we conceptualize land systems along land-use trajectories, which allows us to identify and evaluate leverage points; i.e., entry points on the trajectory where targeted interventions have particular leverage to influence land-use decisions. We apply this framework in the biodiversity hotspot Madagascar. In the Northeast, smallholder agriculture results in a land-use trajectory originating in old-growth forests, spanning forest fragments, and reaching shifting hill rice cultivation and vanilla agroforests. Integrating interdisciplinary empirical data on seven taxa, five ecosystem services, and three measures of agricultural productivity, we assess trade-offs and co-benefits of land-use decisions at three leverage points along the trajectory. These trade-offs and co-benefits differ between leverage points: two leverage points are situated at the conversion of old-growth forests and forest fragments to shifting cultivation and agroforestry, resulting in considerable trade-offs, especially between endemic biodiversity and agricultural productivity. Here, interventions enabling smallholders to conserve forests are necessary. This is urgent since ongoing forest loss threatens to eliminate these leverage points due to path-dependency. The third leverage point allows for the restoration of land under shifting cultivation through vanilla agroforests and offers co-benefits between restoration goals and agricultural productivity. The co-occurring leverage points highlight that conservation and restoration are simultaneously necessary. Methodologically, the framework shows how leverage points can be identified, evaluated, and harnessed for land system transformations under the consideration of path-dependency along trajectories.</p>

SUSTAINABLE FINANCING AS A FACTOR INFLUENCING ECO-FRIENDLY BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION: EXISTING CHALLENGES AND POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS
<p>This study underscores the slow adoption of eco-friendly practices, particularly in high-emission sectors ("brown" businesses), and emphasizes the role of sustainable financing in implementation of environmentally sustainable business practices, with a particular interest in such types of corporate financing as sustainability-linked loans and a relatively new type of financing provided to companies with core business falling under eligible green criteria (loans for green businesses). The purpose was to identify existing challenges preventing promotion of these two types of sustainable financing and borrowers’ sustainable transformation, and propose potential solutions addressing these challenges. The analysis was performed based on a vast literature review. The study revealed the existence of such challenges as borrowers’ profit-driven motives, lack in regulatory transparency, concerns of financial institutions about their profitability and risk of greenwashing, and insufficient governmental support. To address these challenges, regulatory measures are recommended to incentivize financial institutions to offer reduced interest rates on loans for green business and sustainability-linked loans, with governments compensating such losses through imposing higher taxes on “brown” businesses. The study also proposes a potential action plan on amending the regulatory framework with the main focus on the need to develop respective changes with the involvement of all relevant stakeholders. It also addresses the need of establishing mandatory criteria for recognizing businesses as green to qualify for green business loans, and obligatory KPIs for each industry outlining clear targets for improving a company's sustainability profile to be eligible for sustainability-linked loans. These obligatory criteria and KPIs may be adjusted by financial institutions depending on aspects being material for the borrower. The borrower’s compliance with criteria set for green business loans should be regularly reported and verified by an expert company, similarly to the existing rules for sustainability-linked loans. Further, the study proposes incorporating a regulatory body to oversee compliance of financial institutions with these regulations and introducing penalties for their violations, and performing monitoring and adaptation of a regulatory framework, if necessary. The suggested amendments, being subject to a comprehensive feasibility study, are intended to promote the considered types of sustainable financing and boost transit to eco-friendly business practices.</p>
