Dataset for "Sustainable Disposal and End-of-Life Treatment of Battery Energy Storage Systems: An Environmental and Economic Case Study"
This study investigates the environmental and economic impacts of end-of-life (EOL) treatment for a 2.8 MWh/2.5 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) based on lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). It focuses on recycling pre-treatment processes for battery systems and recycling procedures for components like cooling systems, fire extinguishing systems, inverters, and the reuse of BESS containers and substations. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was employed to evaluate key environmental impacts, including climate change, eutrophication, and resource use. The study reveals substantial environmental benefits, particularly from recovering secondary materials like aluminium and copper, with recycling pre-treatment contributing significantly to overall benefits. Additionally, the economic analysis projects profits, emphasizing the advantages of locally sourcing critical raw materials. The research highlights the need for more sustainable recycling practices and provides insights for improving environmental and economic strategies in BESS management, offering guidance for future research and policy development in battery waste processing.
EnergyPROSPECTS Energy Citizenship Factsheet Series, Part 7: Aspects of ENCI III.: Towards social sustainability

This document is Part 7 of the EnergyPROSPECTS Factsheet Series. We have created the Series to publish the results of a mapping of energy citizenship in Europe, along with the first stage of our analysis of the respective data. The EnergyPROSPECTS consortium mapped 596 cases of energy citizenship (ENCI) between November 2020 and May 2021 using desk research, collecting data on many aspects of the cases. Although the analysis is a work in progress, we believe it is important to share our data and, through doing this, contribute to the understanding of energy citizenship in Europe.

EnergyPROSPECTS (PROactive Strategies and Policies for Energy Citizenship Transformation), a H2020 project between 2021-2024, works with a critical understanding of energy citizenship that is grounded in state-of-the-art social sciences and humanities (SSH) insights.

Triggering Sustainable Biogas Energy Communities through Social Innovation- ISABEL ---- Social Innovation and Community energy best preactices, methods and tools across Europe ----Semi-structured interviews from communities

Having identified through the literature review various success and failure factors for social innovation applied to community energy projects, ISABEL has further conducted 18 semi-structured interviews of a range of stakeholders. The interviewee sample was a convenience sample of participants in existing projects and thus, inevitably, they are able to speak more to successful than unsuccessful projects and they likely have had less exposure to obstacles to the success of their projects. T The interviews have focused on identifying answers to the questions: What were the key success factors? What obstacles were overcome? How? Participants were also asked to specify the type of renewable energy and community energy model.

Sustainable recovery of critical elements from seawater saltworks bitterns by integration of high selective sorbents and reactive precipitation and crystallisation: Developing the probe of concept with on-site produced chemicals and energy

The availability of raw mineral resources containing elements included in the Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) list is a growing concern for the European Union. Sea mining has been identified as a promising secondary source. In particular, brines obtained in solar saltworks (bitterns) contain relevant amounts of valuable CRMs such as Mg(II), B(III), other alkaline/alkaline earth metals (Rb(I), Cs(I), Sr(II)) and transition/post-transition elements (Co(II), Ga(III), Ge(IV)). However, the low concentration of some of these elements (µg/L) requires an effort to develop recovery routes that are sustainable and economically feasible where the required chemicals and energy are produced on-site from the saltworks bitterns (i.e. HCl and NaOH). Even the conventional recovery processes such as ion exchange, sorption and precipitation, which have proved to be competitive for metals recovery, are challenged in the case of Trace Elements (TEs). This work studies the recovery of TEs included in the CRMs list from saltworks bitterns after ion exchange processes. First, batch crystallisation and reactive precipitation were tested for some target elements in single-component solutions: Sr(II), Co(II), Ga(III), Ge(IV) and B(III). Then, the experiments were carried out with multi-component synthetic solutions assuming different scenarios of bittern streams coming out a selective extraction stage using sorption and ion exchange processes. The targeted elements were recovered except for Ge(IV), where alternative routes need to be evaluated, as its precipitation involves the use of tannic acid or sulphide solutions that could not be produced from the bitterns. However, a further concentration step would be necessary to achieve element concentrations closer to the mineral phases saturation. Moreover, model simulations were performed using the PHREEQC program, which provided a good prediction of the experimental trends obtained in most cases.

EnergyPROSPECTS Energy Citizenship Factsheet Series, Part 8: Aspects of ENCI III.: Towards environmental sustainability

This document is Part 8 of the EnergyPROSPECTS Factsheet Series.

Dataset supporting publication: "Environmental sustainability and Energy Efficiency in Historical Buildings: GeoFit Project Implementation in the Case Study of a medieval fortress in Perugia"

Dataset supporting publication:“Environmental sustainability and Energy Efficiency in Historical Buildings: GeoFit Project Implementation in the Case Study of a medieval fortress in Perugia” (publication available for download: GEOFIT Zenodo)

Italian cities are mainly constituted by buildings constructed until the mid-20th century by pre-industrial construction techniques. A HVAC system for the energy retrofit of historical buildings is evaluated when applied in the case study of Sant’Apollinare. It consists of a ground source heat pump a water tank for thermal energy storage connected to a low-temperature radiant system and air handling unit. The building thermal-energy behavior, typically influenced by thermal inertia in historical buildings, and the novel HVAC system performance interactions are comparatively assessed together with more traditional scenarios. Energy demand decreases by about one third compared to the pre-retrofit situation.
