The lack of soil data is a complication that most soil scientists will encounter throughout their career; this critical aspect is exacerbated due to the excessive cost of soil surveying. Consequently, it is essential to develop strategies that guarantee the permanent accessibility of past soil sampling efforts. The main objective of this contribution is to release an entire dataset of soil samples surveyed by the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries, and Food (SAGARPA) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the year 2012, the dataset consists of more that 4000 compound samples surveyed on managed cropland. SAGARPAS's main objective was to generate a new index to assess and monitor the current and future state of soil when sustainable soil practices take place. A complete set of physicochemical properties were determined via laboratory analysis for all record in the dataset, namely: pH, EC, OM, BD, P, Sand, Silt, Clay, Texture, N, K, Ca, Mg, Na, CEC, Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Exchangeable Sodium Percentage (ESP), including the calculation of the Sustainable Soil Land Use Subindex (SSLUS). We presented a reviewed dataset with the potential to contribute to a large variety of studies, ranging from: agricultural pinpointing of the best conditions for crop production to digital soil mapping and modeling and agronomical studies. We also provide the original report on the developement of the dataset, indicating the names of creators and colaborators, as well as the methods of analysis and interpretation of the results. The new information is appealing for a wide diversity of users interested in soil traits across agricultural systems of Mexico.

Sustainable Agricultural Pathways in Europe (SIPATH) – land use data

<p>The published land use data were part of the project &ldquo;What is Sustainable Intensification? Operationalizing Sustainable Agricultural Pathways in Europe (SIPATH)&rdquo;, which was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (grant no. CRSII5_183493). The overall objective of this project was to assess short-term trajectories in agriculture land use and landscape structure over a period of 20 years for 16 individual study sites located in 11 countries, ranging from the Mediterranean to the boreal zone. The following datasets illustrate land use data that were generated for the different study sites at two points in time between 2000 and 2020, depending on data availability. The data collection process encompassed land use mapping through visual image interpretation of orthorectified aerial photographs using geographic information systems (ESRI ArcGIS Pro). Land use digitalization was conducted by two scientists in Switzerland, who were in contact with the respective project partners in the study countries to exchange expert knowledge. Minimal mapping unit was 25m<sup>2</sup> for areal elements. Land cover was classified following the European Nature Information System (EUNIS) habitat classification (EEA 2019). The broadest habitat classes were systematically mapped in the study sites, with each covering an area of approximately 25 km&sup2;. While EUNIS focuses on habitat types, the study, however, targeted the intensity of agricultural land-use, several EUNIS classes were complemented with levels of land-use intensities. This was applied for grassland, olive groves and fruit orchards. The spatial resolution of the orthophotos ranged from 25cm to 2m. Accordingly, there were situations in which the spatial resolution was insufficient to accurately determine the land use. In such cases, either orthophotos from about the same year were consulted, possibly showing different phenological stages, or land use statistics and expert judgement based on local expert knowledge of the respective study area were applied.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Reference:</p> <p>EEA, 2019. Corpus and list of keywords from Improving sustainable crop protection using population genetics concepts

<p>Corpus extracted in April 2021 from the ISI Web of Science portal (https://www.webofscience.com) with the following request: &lsquo;Plant AND Resistan* AND Durab*&rsquo;. A first corpus of 2522 articles was built considering all publication years for this extraction. This collection was then refined by categories to remove articles outwith the scope of our search (e.g. related to durable resistant materials for constructions). Data and R-scripts for "Land-use trajectories for sustainable land system transformations: identifying leverage points in a global biodiversity hotspot" (V2)

<p>Sustainable land system transformations are necessary to avert biodiversity and climate collapse. However, it remains unclear where entry points for transformations exist in complex land systems. Here, we conceptualize land systems along land-use trajectories, which allows us to identify and evaluate leverage points; i.e., entry points on the trajectory where targeted interventions have particular leverage to influence land-use decisions. We apply this framework in the biodiversity hotspot Madagascar. In the Northeast, smallholder agriculture results in a land-use trajectory originating in old-growth forests, spanning forest fragments, and reaching shifting hill rice cultivation and vanilla agroforests. Integrating interdisciplinary empirical data on seven taxa, five ecosystem services, and three measures of agricultural productivity, we assess trade-offs and co-benefits of land-use decisions at three leverage points along the trajectory. These trade-offs and co-benefits differ between leverage points: two leverage points are situated at the conversion of old-growth forests and forest fragments to shifting cultivation and agroforestry, resulting in considerable trade-offs, especially between endemic biodiversity and agricultural productivity. Here, interventions enabling smallholders to conserve forests are necessary. This is urgent since ongoing forest loss threatens to eliminate these leverage points due to path-dependency. The third leverage point allows for the restoration of land under shifting cultivation through vanilla agroforests and offers co-benefits between restoration goals and agricultural productivity. The co-occurring leverage points highlight that conservation and restoration are simultaneously necessary. Methodologically, the framework shows how leverage points can be identified, evaluated, and harnessed for land system transformations under the consideration of path-dependency along trajectories.</p>

Data for the paper, "Social media data for environmental sustainability: a critical review of opportunities, threats and ethical use"

<p>These data were collected for the paper, &quot;Social media data for environmental sustainability: a critical review of opportunities, threats and ethical use&quot; published in One Earth. It includes&nbsp;a&nbsp;database of studies applying social media data in environmental sustainability research, which were collected and reviewed in full by the authors. Rather than providing a comprehensive summary of all relevant literature like in a systematic review, our objective was to take stock and evaluate the previous body of work in the field in order to promote conceptual innovation from its critical examination. Building on a set of 169 studies collected in a previous systematic review of social media data applications in environmental research (Ghermandi and Sinclair 2019), the database includes additional relevant studies that were identified by snowballing previous references and adding further gray and scientific academic articles known to the authors. For studies to be included in our analysis, they had to involve the use of data from one or more social media platforms and&nbsp;investigate human interactions with and/or impacts on the environment. We relied on a broad definition of social media including any website or application that enables users to create and share content or to participate in social networking (e.g., blogging sites, recommendation sites, and online forums). We further strengthened the analysis by including insights from additional literature on social media that do not have a direct application to environmental sustainability (e.g., studies on biases in social media data). Data from: Development of a sustainability assessment algorithm and its validation using case studies on cryogenic machining

This work presents a comprehensive structure for evaluating the sustainability of machining processes. Industries can contribute towards developing a sustainable future by using algorithms that evaluate the sustainability of their processes. Inspired by the literature, the proposed model involves a set of metrics that are critical in evaluating the impact of a process on society, environment, and economy. The flexibility of this model allows decision-makers to use the available responses to identify the most favorable process. The entropy weight method was suggested for objectively calculating the weights of each indicator. A multi-criteria decision-making method i.e., Technique for Order Preference based on Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), was used to rank processes in the decreasing order of their sustainability. The proposed algorithm was successfully validated with case studies from the published literature. A MATLAB code was also created so that industries may expeditiously apply this method to evaluate the sustainability of machining processes.

Sustainable power generation for at least one month from ambient humidity using unique nanofluidic diode

<p>The continuous energy-harvesting in moisture environment is attractive for the development of clean energy source. Controlling the transport of ionized mobile charge in intelligent nanoporous membrane systems is a promising strategy to develop the moisture-enabled electric generator. However, existing designs still suffer from low output power density. Moreover, these devices can only produce short-term (mostly a few seconds or a few hours, rarely for a few days) voltage and current output in the ambient environment. Here, we show an ionic diode&ndash;type hybrid membrane capable of continuously generating energy in the ambient environment. The built-in electric field of the nanofluidic diode-type PN junction helps the selective ions separation and the steady-state one-way ion charge transfer. This directional ion migration is further converted to electron transportation at the surface of electrodes via oxidation-reduction reaction and charge adsorption, thus resulting in a continuous voltage and current with high energy conversion efficiency.</p>

Die Reflexionen wurden durch vorgegebene Fragen angeleitet. Die hier vorliegenden Texte sind, von den Studierenden selbst niedergeschriebene, Transkripte von Sprechtexten eines Self-Video-Casts. Es handelt sich dabei um eine benotete Pr&uuml;fungsleistung einer universit&auml;ts&uuml;bergreifenden Wahlpflicht-Lehrveranstaltung mit 1-3 Credit-Points.</p> <p>A dataset containing written reflections of 57 university students from several German universities and fields of study on their participation in collaborative research-based learning focused on sustainability topics and using videos as a research tool. These reflections were guided by given questions. The texts presented here are transcripts of spoken texts of self-video-casts, written down by the students themselves. The texts were graded as part of an inter-university elective course worth 1-3 credit points.</p>

Data from "Towards a sustainable use of shower water: Habits and explanatory factors in southern Spain"

<p>One of the targets of SDG 6 is the efficient use of water resources in all sectors in order to tackle water shortages. In the home, showering is one of the main water consuming activities. How can people make a more sustainable use of shower water? To answer this question, this research analyses showering habits and explanatory factors of shower use. The study is carried out with data from 945 students of the University of Granada, Spain. Significant differences are observed in shower use during the summer and winter months: the average duration is 8.8 and 11.6 minutes, respectively, and shower frequency is greater in summer. Determinants of different shower water use include gender, ideology, pro-environmental actions, inherent values and connectedness to nature, among others. Those variables relate differently to duration and frequency of showers, according to the season, thus highlighting the importance of seasonality. The results show that there is room to achieve a more sustainable use of the shower, in terms of frequency and duration, through awareness measures that are tailored to groups that make a less sustainable use of showers. The main recommendation is that awareness campaigns should be designed on the basis of the user profile as well as the season.</p>

Data from: Global trends of cropland phosphorus use and sustainability challenges

<p>To meet the growing food demand while addressing the multiple challenges of exacerbating phosphorus (P) pollution and depleting P rock reserves, P use efficiency (PUE, the ratio of productive P output to P input in a defined system) in crop production needs to be improved. Although many efforts have been devoted to improving nutrient management practices on farms, few studies have examined the historical trajectories of PUE and their socioeconomic and agronomic drivers on a national scale. Here we present a database of the P budget (the input and output of the crop production system) and PUE by country and by crop type for 1961–2019 and examine the substantial contribution of several drivers for PUE, such as economic development stages and crop portfolios. To address the P management challenges, we found that global PUE in crop production must increase to 68–81%, and recent trends indicate some meaningful progress towards this goal. However, P management challenges and opportunities in croplands vary widely among countries.</p>
