Water chemistry data from synoptic sampling of 235 Lake Michigan tributaries: 10-15 July, 2018

This dataset includes nutrient (total nitrogen and phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphorus, and dissolved inorganic nitrogen [nitrate+nitrite+ammonium]) and chloride concentrations for 235 tributaries of Lake Michigan collected during a synoptic sampling event from 10-15 July, 2018. The dataset also includes modeled discharge metrics for the 235 sampled watersheds, as well as spatial watershed characteristics.

Respiration in soils collected from the REU synoptic sample grid in the Andrews Experimental Forest, 1994-1995

The 1993 (SP005) sampling grid was expanded to 183 sites providing a more comprehensive sampling grid. Because of potential edge effects problems, all sample locations were moved at least 20 meters from the closest road or clearing. Changes from the original location are given in entity 2. CO2 is measured over a period of 41 weeks in soils collected from all of the REU synoptic sample sites in the summer of 1994. Soils were weighted at the same time that respiration was assayed and moisture content was maintained at the same level throughout the series. The time period represented by this data is 15 September 1994 to 12 July 1995. In the initial stages, CO2 concentrations were assayed every week, after 15 weeks, the incubation period was extended to 2 weeks. After the incubation vessels were assayed, the headspace was flushed with lab air and the moisture was adjusted with sterile deionized water. Results show that there was a very high correlation between respiration rates during the 1st and 3rd weeks (r = 0.96) suggesting that the two week incubation period we us as an indicator of initial concentrations of labile carbon is valid. There was also a high correlation between rates observed within the first week and rates observed after 41 weeks (r = 0.85) suggesting that the initial rates provide a good relative guide to rates observed after 10 months. In addition, respiration rates after 41 weeks were 80% of those observed during the first week.

Coweeta Synoptic Data from 49 sampling sites in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin from 2009 to 2010 (mesoscale habitat data)

This data was generated as part of synoptic sampling conducted at the Coweeta LTER between June 2009 and May 2010. 49 wadeable streams with low levels of development were sampled throughout the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin in the Southern Appalachians. Effects of riparian vegetative conditions on a suite of channel morphological variables were investigated: active channel width, variability of width within a reach, large wood frequency, mesoscale habitat distributions, median particle size, and percent fines. Stream mesoscale habitat areas for each 150 m stream reach were recorded in this particular dataset. At each site, a uniform 150 meter section of stream was surveyed. Observers kept a running tally of the areas associated with various mesoscale habitat units including, cascades, riffles, pools, alcoves, pocket water, runs, glides, and obstructions.

Coweeta LTER Synoptic Data from 56 sampling sites located in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin from 2009 (geomorphological)

Coweeta LTER researchers sampled fifty-eight stream sites in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin in February and June of 2009. Sites were selected to represent the range of land cover and land use within the basin. Samples were taken over three days of stable weather and discharge during periods of baseflow. They were used to characterize conditions across the basin during the growing and the non-growing seasons without the influence of elevated discharge. Each entity represents a table found in the downloadable relational database. NOTE: There is only 1 database to download regardless of which entity you choose.
