Wildfire and climate teleconnection data in the Western Mediterranean Basin

<p>This dataset contains the data used to conduct all analyses of the manuscript entitled &quot;<strong>Spatio-temporal domains of wildfire-prone teleconnection patterns in the Western Mediterranean Basin</strong>&quot;. Submitted to Geophysical Research Letters.</p> <p>File <em>fire_data.csv</em> contains monthly gridded data of total burned area (BA), number of fire ignitions (N) and the 95th percentile of fire size (S) at 0.5 degree spatial resolution. The spatial extent covers Portugal, Spain, Southern France, Corsica and Sardina. Original data sources have been acknowledged in the manuscript file.</p> <p>File <em>teleconnections.csv</em> contains monthly data of the the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the East Atlantic (EA), the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), the El Ni&ntilde;o Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Mediterranean Oscillation (MOI), the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), the Scandinavian pattern (SCAND) and the Western Mediterranean oscillation (WeMOi). Macrosystems EDDIE Module 3: Teleconnections

Ecosystems can be influenced by teleconnections, in which meteorological, societal, and/or ecological phenomenon link remote regions via cause and effect relationships. Because it is difficult to predict how ecosystems will respond to drivers from remote regions, many researchers are using models to simulate different teleconnection scenarios and see how ecosystems respond. For example, lake simulation models provide a powerful tool for exploring how lake thermal structure and ice cover respond to climate teleconnections such as the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO). In this module, students will learn how to set up a lake model and "force" the model with climate scenarios to test hypotheses about how far-away drivers interact with local lake characteristics to affect lake temperatures and ice cover in different lakes. The overarching goal of this module is for students to explore new modeling and computing tools while learning fundamental concepts about how teleconnections affect lake temperatures and ice cover. The A-B-C structure of this module makes it flexible and adaptable to a range of student levels and course structures. This dataset contains instructional materials and the files necessary to run the complete module. Readers are referred to the GLM science manual (Hipsey et al. 2014; 2019) for further details on model configuration.

Data from: Teleconnections and local weather orchestrate the reproduction of tit species in the Carpathian Basin

<p>Variation in climatic conditions is an important driving force of ecological processes. Populations are under selection to respond to climatic changes with respect to phenology of the annual cycle (e.g. breeding, migration) and life-history. As teleconnections can reflect climate on a global scale, the responses of terrestrial animals are often investigated in relation to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation. However, investigation of other teleconnections and local climate is often neglected. In this study, we examined over a 33-year period the relationships between four teleconnections (El Niño-Southern Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation, Arctic Oscillation, East Atlantic Pattern), local weather parameters (temperature and precipitation) and reproduction in great tits <i>Parus major</i> and blue tits <i>Cyanistes caeruleus</i> in the Carpathian Basin, Hungary. Furthermore, we explored how annual variations in the timing of food availability were correlated with breeding performance. In both species, annual laying date was negatively associated with the Arctic Oscillation. The date of peak abundance of caterpillars was negatively associated with local temperatures in December-January, while laying date was negatively related to January-March temperature. We found that date of peak abundance of caterpillars and laying date of great tits advanced, while in blue tits clutch size decreased over the decades but laying date did not advance. The results suggest that weather conditions during the months that preceded the breeding season, as well as temporally more distant winter conditions, were connected to breeding date. Our results highlight that phenological synchronization to food availability was different between the two tit species, namely it was disrupted in blue tits only. Additionally, the results suggest that in order to find the climatic drivers of the phenological changes of organisms, we should analyze a broader range of global meteorological parameters.</p>

This dataset includes two experimental datasets called "ACLM" and "AHIST". For "AHIST," it is complements data from another repository (<a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10565870" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10565870</a>).</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h2><strong>Data Format</strong></h2> <p>All data are 4-byte binary files accompanied by GrADS control file (http://cola.gmu.edu/grads/) to access the data.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h2><strong>Variables</strong></h2> <p>The dataset uploaded includes a 50-member ensemble of winter-mean (December&ndash;January&shy;&ndash;February) fields for 1980&ndash;2020 (a year refers to that including January of each DJF season) over the Northern Hemisphere (0&deg;&ndash;360&deg;, 10&deg;&ndash;90&deg;N). A part of variables includes data in the tropics (0&deg;&ndash;360&deg;, 20S&deg;&ndash;90&deg;N).</p> <p>Variables include wind velocities (<em>u, v</em>), pressure velocity (<em>omg</em>), temperature (T), geopotential height (<em>z</em>), eddy momentum (<em>UU</em>, <em>VV</em>, <em>UV</em>), heat (<em>UT</em>, <em>VT</em>), and covariance of height (<em>ZZ</em>) fluxes by transient eddies,&nbsp;10m wind velocity (<em>u10</em>, <em>v10</em>), 10m wind speed (<em>uvabs</em>),&nbsp;surface pressure (<em>Ps</em>), sensible and latent heat fluxes (<em>sens</em>, <em>evap</em>), precipitation (<em>prcp</em>), cumulus precipitation (<em>prcpc</em>), and precipitation by large-scale condensation (<em>prcpl</em>).</p> <p>The diabatic heating rate consists of only ten ensemble members from 1980-2014. The <em>dtphy</em> is the sum of the diabatic heating terms from different physical processes in the model, which include vertical diffusion (<em>dtvdf</em>), cumulus heating (<em>dtcum</em>), large-scale condensation heating (<em>dtlsc</em>), shallow convection heating (<em>dtscn</em>), cloud physics heating (<em>dtcph</em>), and radiative heating by long wave (<em>dtradl</em>) and short wave (<em>dtrads</em>).</p>

Data from "Robust ENSO Teleconnection to North Pacific and Southwest Coast of North America in the Late Cretaceous Greenhouse"

<p>The El Ni&ntilde;o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) exerts impacts on global climate through atmosphere teleconnections. Geological records from deep-time greenhouse periods suggest possible existence of past ENSO teleconnections, but the associated mechanisms for deep-time ENSO teleconnections remain unknown. Here, we investigate the teleconnection between ENSO and the southwest coast of North America (SWNA) during the Late Cretaceous based on paleoclimate simulations and sedimentary archives. We find that under the forcing from high pCO2 levels and absence of the Bering Seaway in Late Cretaceous, ENSO teleconnection to SWNA was primarily conducted by Subtropical High, rather than Aleutian Low. Consequently, the Westerlies, sensitive to changes in Subtropical High, shifted longitudinally, leading to alterations in moisture transportation to SWNA. Our study suggests that absence of Bering Seaway in the Late Cretaceous, resulted in pressure anomalies that partially inhibited the ENSO-SWNA teleconnection, but higher pCO2 levels facilitated this process through a more sensitive mid-latitude pressure system.</p>

<p>This archive includes the data used for the manuscript &quot;The role of atmospheric transport for El Nino Southern Oscillation teleconnections&quot; submitted to Geophysical Research Letter.</p> <p>All data is available as monthly means. &quot;anomaly&quot;-files include the anomalies between the tagged and untagged air as discussed in the manuscript (see Methods), for specific humidity (<em>hum</em>), potential temperature (<em>theta</em>) and total energy (<em>energy</em>). The mass fraction of the tagged to all the particles is included in <em>mass_frac</em>. The temporal change in total energy (<em>ediv</em>) is available both as 2d and 3d (<em>vertical</em>) for both <em>tagged </em>and <em>untagged </em>particles. Temporal change in height (<em>dz</em>) and potential temperature (<em>dtheta</em>) is included for the tagged air.</p> <p>The data for the Sensitivity study on the selection of timelength is available in the <em>timelength</em>.</p> <p>The data is included for following seasons: <em>DJF </em>(December-January-February), <em>MAM </em>(March-April-May), <em>JJA </em>(June-July-August), <em>SON</em> (September-October-November).</p>
