Temporal evolution of plutonium concentrations and isotopic ratios, cesium activity concentrations, granulometric parameters and organic matter properties in the Ukedo–Takase Rivers draining the Difficult-To-Return Zone in Fukushima, Japan (2013–2020)

The current dataset was compiled to investigate the temporal evolution of plutonium concentrations, isotopic ratios and radiocesium activity concentrations in flood sediment deposits collected in the Ukedo and Takase Rivers, draining a part of the Difficult-to-Return Zone, in Fukushima Prefecture, from 2013 to 2020. These radionuclides were released in large quantities during the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident that occurred in March 2011 in Northeastern Japan (Steinhauser et al., 2014). Models showed that ~ 80 % of radionuclide releases occurred over the ocean (Mathieu et al., 2018; MEXT, 2011). The radioactive plume is drained by several coastal rivers to the Pacific Ocean, and sediment-bound radionuclide transfers in these rivers are mainly controlled by the occurrence of typhoons and tropical storms (Evrard et al., 2021). The objective of the research relying on the current database is to investigate the temporal changes in Pu signatures that occurred between 2013 and 2020 in flood sediment deposits collected in the Ukedo and the Takase Rivers, and to identify potential factors controlling these changes by the means of statistical approach.

The current dataset comprises an Excel file including the variables description, and the data itself.

Spatio-temporal dynamics of abiotic and biotic properties explain biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships

There is increasing evidence that spatial and temporal dynamics of biodiversity and ecosystem functions play an essential role in biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (BEF) relationships. Despite the known importance of soil processes for forest ecosystems, belowground functions in response to tree diversity and spatio-temporal dynamics of ecological processes and conditions remain poorly described. We propose a novel conceptual framework integrating spatio-temporal dynamics in BEF relationships and hypothesized a positive tree species richness effect on soil ecosystem functions through the spatial and temporal stability of biotic and abiotic soil properties based on species complementarity and asynchrony. We tested this framework within a long-term tree diversity experiment in Central Germany by assessing soil ecosystem functions (soil microbial properties and litter decomposition) and abiotic variables (soil moisture and surface temperature) for two consecutive years in high spatial and temporal resolution. Tree species richness and identity had significant effects on soil properties (e.g., soil microbial biomass). Structural equation modeling revealed that overall soil microbial biomass was partly explained by (a) enhanced temporal stability of soil surface temperature and (b) decreased spatial stability of soil microbial biomass. Overall, spatial stability of soil microbial properties was positively correlated with their temporal stability. These results suggest that spatio-temporal dynamics are indeed crucial determinants in BEF relationships and highlight the importance of vegetation-induced microclimatic conditions for stable provisioning of soil ecosystem functions and services.

Deterministic Compilation of Temporal Safety Properties in Explicit State Model Checking
The translation of temporal logic specifications constitutes an essen- tial step in model checking and a major influence on the efficiency of formal verification via model checking. We devise a new explicit-state translation of Lin- ear Temporal Logic to automata for the class of LTL specifications that describe safety properties, arguably the most used formal specifications in real-world sys- tems. By exploiting the inherent determinism in safety specifications, we can build deterministic Promela never claims that accept only the bad prefixes of the safety specification. In contrast to previous works, we focus on compilation to never claims rather than simply automata and measure Spin model-checking time separately from compilation time and automata size. An extensive experi- mental evaluation over a space of configurations demonstrates that our new trans- lation consistently results in better model-checking performance, for a large array of benchmarks, over the best current translation.
