Farm and regional levels' database used to test the effectiveness of slope and distance from buildings in approximating the pastoral site-use intensity of alpine pastures

<p>The excel file contains the two databases used in the paper &ldquo;Slope and distance from buildings are easy-to-retrieve proxies for estimating livestock site-use intensity in alpine summer pastures&rdquo; to test the effectiveness of slope and distance from buildings in approximating the pastoral site-use intensity of alpine pastures.</p> <p>The database in the &lsquo;farm level&rsquo; sheet has been used to assess if slope and distance from buildings were good predictors of site-use intensity at farm level, i.e. the number of GPS locations counted within sample units was modelled as a function of the two proxies. Moreover, this database has been used to evaluate if the expected transition of Vegetation Ecological Groups (VEGs) from the shrub-encroached to the nitrophilous ones corresponded to a real site-use intensity gradient as represented by the stocking rates measured through GPS locations, i.e. by modelling the total number of GPS locations within sample units in function VEGs.</p> <p>The database in the &lsquo;Regional level&rsquo; sheet has been used to evaluate if the five VEGs were effectively discriminated by distance from buildings and slope. Two models were performed by specifying either slope and distance from buildings as response variables and VEG as fixed factor.</p>

Database of experimental determinations of soil respiration in pine and spruce forests during the growing season of 2023 at the Lyalsky test site (middle taiga, northeast of the East European Plain)

<p>The data set includes the results of 342 measurements of CO2 emissions (SR, gС/m2/day) from the soil surface of coniferous ecosystems at the Lyalsky test site during the growing season (May-September) of 2023. The objects of the study were: pine forest (PS, Gleyic Folic Albic Podzol (Arenic)) and spruce forest (SM, Albic Retisols). The values of temperature (Ts, at a depth of 10 cm), moisture (Ms, in a layer of 0-5 cm) of the soil and air temperature (Ta) are also given.</p><p>The research was carried out by employees of the Institute of Biology of Komi Science Centre of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences as part of the most important innovative project of national importance "Development of a system for ground-based and remote monitoring of carbon pools and greenhouse gas fluxes in the territory of the Russian Federation, ensuring the creation of recording data systems on the fluxes of climate-active substances and the carbon budget in forests and other terrestrial ecological systems" (Registration number: 123030300031-6).&nbsp;</p>

Cloud-free Chinese Gaofen-1 WFV near-infrared surface reflectance over Huailai remote sensing test site throughout 2020

<p>Land surface reflectance product form the starting point for many application regions such as land cover mapping and the generation of biophysical essential climate variables (ECV). Therefore, ensuring the quality of surface reflectance products is necessary to maintain the integrity of the research outcoming of these application areas. However, ground validation of surface reflectance satellite products is challenging, because ground &ldquo;truth&rdquo; on a coarse grid scale based on sparse ground measurements is subject to uncertainty due to spatial heterogeneity. In order to quantify the influence of spatial heterogeneity on the uncertainty of surface reflectance ground &ldquo;truth&rdquo; in different sampling cases, we generated the high-resolution (16 m) near-infrared surface reflectance over Huailai remote sensing test site based on Chinese Gaofen-1 WFV Band4 data.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>All cloud-free GF-1 WFV images throughout the year 2020 were extracted. And there are 25 images in total, with at least one image for each month. The WFV Band4 data covering the whole Huailai test station have been processed into Analysis Ready Data (ARD) system, which aims to simplify and reduce the users&rsquo; burden by providing pre-processing such as geometric alignment, radiometric recalibration, and atmospheric correction (Zhong et al., 2021). The geometric normalization of the GF-1 WFV data was realized with the procedure developed by Shan et al. (2014). And the radiometric normalization was finished through cross-calibrating with the Landsat TM/OLI with the method proposed by Yang et al. (2015). Total biomass of two native and one nonnative Eugenia congeners from growth chamber experiment with site, soil microbe, and temperature treatments to test biotic interaction effects of range expansion.

To assess the potential for invasive plants to shift ranges more readily than native plant species, a growth chamber experiment was set up to monitor changes in biomass under different site, temperature, and soil biota treatments. Total biomass (above and belowground) of three Eugenia congeners was assessed by site, soil microbe, and temperature treatments. Of the three congeneric shrub species, two are native to southern and central Florida (Eugenia foetida and E. axillaris,), and one is a non-native invasive from south America (E. uniflora). We measured total biomass for these plant species in growth chambers grown under live and sterile soils from two sites within their current range, and one site in their expected range, simulating current (2010) and predicted future (2050) spring growing season temperatures in the new range. The experiments took place from 2012 - 2013 in University of Central Florida growth chambers.

Data from: Testing the link between perceived and actual risk of predation: mosquito oviposition site selection and egg predation by native and introduced fish

1. According to the threat-sensitivity hypothesis, prey avoidance behaviour should reflect the magnitude of predation risk. Since predation can strongly affect reproduction success, ovipositing females are expected to adaptively adjust their predator-avoidance response, or local breeding patch selectivity, in accordance with the perceived level of threat posed for their progeny by specific predators. However, association between avoidance and predation can be disrupted when the prey and the predator lack spatio-temporal opportunities to co-evolve, such as in cases of non-native predator introductions. 2. We examined the interactions between mosquitoes (from the genus Culex) and three species of sympatric predaceous freshwater fish, a native cyprinid (Barbus paludinosus), a cichlid (Pseudocrenilabrus philander), and an introduced poeciliid, the Western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). 3. In an outdoor mesocosm experiment we quantified patterns of Culex oviposition site selection across fish species using free-roaming, caged, and fish-free treatments. In a complementary laboratory experiment we tested the effectiveness of each fish species as predators of mosquito eggs and larvae. 4. Synthesis and applications. We found evidence for: (i) mosquito egg raft predation by free- roaming fish; (ii) fish-specific avoidance by ovipositing Culex and (iii) a positive association between fish-specific oviposition avoidance and fish-specific efficiency as an egg predator. These results contribute towards a better understanding of predator-prey coevolution, predator-borne cue recognition, and suggest local native fish, the Southern mouthbrooder (Pseudocrenilabrus philander), as an alternative to Gambusia for the biocontrol of Culex mosquitoes.
