Late season thaw depth measured in the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research (ARC LTER) moist acidic tussock experimental plots at Toolik Field station, Alaska Arctic 1993 to 2025

Late season thaw depth was measured in the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research (ARC LTER) experimental plots (1981 Moist Acidic Tussock, 1989 Moist Acidic Tussock, 2006 Low Fertilization Moist Acidic Tussock, 1989 Moist Non-acidic Tussock, 1989 Moist Non-acidic Non-tussock and 1989 Wet Sedge tundra) at Toolik Lake, Alaska using a steel thaw probe. Note: for 2017-2018 only 1989 Moist Non-Acidic Tussock Tundra and 2006 Low fertilization Moist Acidic Tussock Tundra were measured. For other sites it has become difficult to distinguish rocks from frozen soil with a steel thaw probe. Starting in 2023 weekly thaw depth measurements were made throughout the growing season in the 2006 Low fertilization Moist Acidic Tussock Tundra experiment.

Tussock watershed thaw depth survey summary for 1990 to present, Arctic Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER), Toolik Research Station, Alaska.

Thaw depth was measured since 1990 using a steel probe in the Tussock watershed just south of Toolik Lake, Alaska, on a gentle slope dominated by moist, non-acidic tussock tundra. At least two surveys are conducted each summer, on 2 July and on 11 August (plus or minus 1 day).

Imnavait Watershed Thaw Depth Survey Summary for 2003 to 2024, Arctic LTER, Toolik Research Station, Alaska.

Thaw depth was measured using a steel probe in the Imnavait Creek watershed, near Toolik Lake, Alaska. The thaw grid includes measurements made from the valley bottom (on both sides of the stream), up the hillslope. The thaw grid is near Imnavait water tracks 7 and 8, and measurements have been made from the 2003 season until present. At least two surveys are conducted each summer, on 2 July and on 11 August (plus or minus a couple of days on either side of those dates).

Overwintering Fires from 2009-2010 Burns near Fairbanks, Alaska: Residual Soil Organic Layer Depth, Burn Depth and Thaw Depth Collected 2023

This dataset contains data from adjacent overwintering and single-season burn sites. For the overwintering fires, we targeted locations that had burned in the summers of 2009, smouldered through the winter months, and reignited in 2010. Adjacent to these overwintering sites, we identified single-season burn sites from within portions of the 2009 fires that were unaffected by overwintering. A total of seven overwintering fire sites and four single-season fire sites were sampled. Within each site, three plots were established. Data inlcudes within plot measurments of post-fire seedling composition and density, residual SOL, burn depth estimated by black spruce adventitious roots, thaw depth, and pre-fire tree species composition and estimates of combustion. This is one of three packages from this project; this one contains the soils data.

Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR): Weekly thaw depth data, 2009-2024

The Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem warming cause a net release of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C, that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool, influence ecosystem C loss?, and 3) How do winter and summer warming alone, and in combination, affect ecosystem C exchange? We are answering these questions using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure ecosystem carbon balance and radiocarbon isotope ratios at a warming experiment located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. This data set includes weekly thaw depth measurements collected from winter warming, summer warming, and control treatment plots at CiPEHR. Additional measurements from on-plot gas flux wells, water table monitoring wells, and off-plot locations are also reported. Note that the experimental warming portion of this experiment concluded in 2022. These data are a continuation of measurements taken at previously warmed plots but plots were not actively manipulated after 2022.

Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating and Drying Research (DryPEHR): Weekly thaw depth data, 2011-2022

This drying and warming experiment addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem drying, warming and permafrost thaw cause a net release or uptake of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool influence ecosystem C loss? 3) How do drying and warming affect plant communities and ecosystem properties? We are answering these questions using a combined warming and drying experiment (DryPEHR), which is situated with the Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project and located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Warming treatment here refers to growing season air temperature warming (~1C) using open top chambers (OTC) combined with soil 'warming' using snow fences during the snow covered months. Drying is achieved using an automated pumping system that lowers the water table in the dry plots. Soil warming began in 2008; OTCs and drying in 2011. This data set includes weekly ground thaw measurements.

Anatuvuk River fire scar thaw depth measurements during the 2008 to 2014 growing season

The Anaktuvuk River Fire occurred in 2007 on the North Slope of Alaska. In 2008, three eddy covariance towers were established at sites represent ing unburned tundra, moderately burned tundra, and severely burned tundra. Several times during the 2008-2014 growing seasons, thaw depth was measured at approximately 70 points near each of these towers . Data presented here are the individual measurements for each site and date.

Alaska Peatland Experiment: Biweekly flux data and environmental measurements (soil temperature, soil moisture, seasonal thaw depth, water table depth)

This dataset contains ecosystem respiration data measured biweekly at the Alaska Peatland Experiment (APEX) gradient plots. Five plots encompass the gradient all changing in dominant vegetation type. Plot labels are as follows: BS (Black Spruce), WB (Shrub), TG (Grass), EC (Sedge/forb), Control (Rich fen). Data set also includes environmental data (soil temperature, soil moisture, seasonal thaw depth, water table depth) taken at the same time as each flux.

Fireline surface level and thaw depths: Wickersham fire sites (1977 - 2009)

In June of 1971, the Wickersham fire burned 6313 ha in an open black spruce forest underlain with permafrost and provided an opportunity to study fire and fireline effects on the rate and patterns of permafrost, vegetation, and soil recovery. Because of the fire?s proximity to Fairbanks, a concentrated effort was made to control the fire and 29 bulldozers constructed 113 km of fireline which averaged 12 m in width (Viereck and Dyrness 1979). The construction of firelines with heavy machinery involves the complete removal of vegetation and the soil organic layer down to mineral soil. The removal of the organic layer and subsequent loss of thermal insulation results in an increase in permafrost depth of thaw. In addition, thermal subsidence, erosion, and formation of gullies makes the fireline surface unstable and full recovery tends to be a lengthy process. This long-term study examines fireline surface level changes and maximum depth of thaw over time on cross sections of two firelines underlain with ice rich permafrost.

Survey plots were located in the Toolik Lake LTER fertilization experiment in Alaska; at Imnavait Creek, Alaska; at Paddus, Latnjajaure and the Stepps site near Abisko in northern Sweden; at various sites in Adventdalen, Svalbard; in the Zackenberg valley, Northeast Greenland; at BEO near Barrow, Alaska and at the Anaktuvuk River Burn in Alaska. Measurements were made during the growing seasons 2003 to 2009.
