Dataset of "Thermal Stability of Valuable Metals in Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode Materials: Temperature Range 100-400 °C"

Lithium is crucial in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), serving as a main component of the electrolyte and cathode. Elements such as cobalt, nickel, and manganese are also vital for high performance, energy density, and stability. This study aimed to examine the behaviour of end- of-life cathode material (LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2) and its valuable metals after exposure to temperatures between 100 and 400 °C, comparing it with untreated material. The lithium content cannot be reliably determined by conventional analytical methods, so inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was chosen for this purpose. For ICP-OES measurements, samples were dissolved in different solvents for a specified time, and the concentrations of lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt were measured. From the measured values, their theoretical yields were calculated. Due to the annealing at given temperatures and subsequent dissolution, this step can be considered as the first stage of the pyrometallurgical- hydrometallurgical process used in battery recycling. The study was complemented by further analyses to monitor the effect of annealing temperatures on the properties of the material. Based on the results, it was found that the highest theoretical yield in this temperature range was for material annealed at 400 °C and dissolved in 20% nitric acid for 4 hours.

Tuning the Thermal Stability and Photoisomerization of Azoheteroarenes through Macrocycle Strain

Azobenzene and its derivatives are one of the most-widespread molecular scaffolds in a range of modern applications, as well as in fundamental research. After photoexcitation, azo-based photoswitches revert back to the most stable isomer in a timescale ( ) that determines the range of potential applications. Attempts to bring to extreme values prompted to the development of azobenzene and azoheteroarene derivatives that either rebalance the E- and Z- isomer stabilities, or exploit unconventional thermal isomerization mechanisms. In the former case, one successful strategy has been the creation of macrocycle strain, which tends to impact the E/Z stability asymmetrically, and thus significantly modify . On the bright side, bridged derivatives have shown an improved optical switching owing to the higher quantum yields and absence of degradation. However, in most (if not all) cases, bridged derivatives display a reversed thermal stability (more stable Z-isomer), and smaller than the acyclic counterparts, which restricts their potential interest to applications requiring a fast forward and backwards switch. In this paper, we investigate the impact of alkyl bridges to the thermal stability of phenyl-azoheteroarenes using computational methods, and we reveal that is indeed possible to combine such improved photo-switching characteristics while preserving the regular thermal stability (more stable E-isomer), and increased values under the appropriate connectivity and bridge length.

Data and code: Microgeographic variation in demography and thermal regimes stabilize regional abundance of a widespread freshwater fish

Predicting the persistence of species under climate change is an increasingly important objective in ecological research and management. However, biotic and abiotic heterogeneity can drive asynchrony in population responses at small spatial scales, complicating species-level assessments. For widely distributed species consisting of many fragmented populations, such as brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), understanding drivers of asynchrony in population dynamics can improve predictions of range-wide climate impacts. We analyzed demographic time-series from mark-recapture surveys of eleven natural brook trout populations in eastern Canada over 13 years to examine the extent, drivers, and consequences of fine-scale population variation. The focal populations were genetically differentiated, occupied a small area (~25 km2) with few human impacts, and experienced similar climate conditions. Recruitment was highly asynchronous, weakly related to climate variables, and showed population-specific relationships with other demographic processes, generating diverse population dynamics. In contrast, individual growth was mostly synchronized among populations and driven by a shared positive relationship with stream temperature. Outputs from population-specific models were unrelated to four of five hypothesized drivers (recruitment, growth, reproductive success, phylogenetic distance), but variation in groundwater inputs strongly influenced stream temperature regimes and stock-recruitment relationships. Finally, population asynchrony generated a portfolio effect that stabilized regional species abundance. Our results demonstrate that population demographic and habitat diversity at microgeographic scales can play a significant role in moderating species responses to climate change. Moreover, we suggest that the absence of human activities within study streams preserved natural habitat variation and contributed to asynchrony in brook trout abundance, while the small study area eased monitoring and increased the likelihood of detecting asynchrony. Therefore, anthropogenic habitat degradation, landscape context, and spatial scale must be considered when developing management strategies to monitor and maintain populations that are diverse, stable, and resilient to climate change.

Dataset of "Thermal Stability of Valuable Metals in Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode Materials: Temperature Range 500-800 °C"

Examination of the cathode part of a lithium-ion battery, which is composed of NMC spinel 622 (LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2), and investigation of its stability during annealing at temperatures ranging from 500-800 °C. Determination of valuable metals (Li, Ni, Mn and Co) after exposure to temperatures from 500 to 800 °C using ICP-OES analysis. The correlation between element stability and the temperature of PVDF release, a binder in cathodes, was demonstrated by DTA. SEM-EDS performed local chemical analysis. XRD characterised the crystalline structures of the original material and changes after annealing at 800 °C. This work builds on Part I, which focusses on the thermal stability of the material in lower temperature ranges. This research aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the pyrometallurgical aspect of the recycling process and identify the ideal annealing temperature for maximising the recovery of valuable metals.

PDB files of "Characterization of ligand-induced thermal stability of the human organic cation transporter 2 (OCT2)"

The predicted alphafold structure of OCT2 (Uniprot O15244) was embedded in a DPPC model membrane, solvated with TIP3P water and subjected to 250 ns molecular dynamics simulation using the Desmond module of Schroedingers Drug Discovery Suite. The last 150 ns were used for clustering and the cluster with most of the members (cluster0) was selected as a model for OCT2. Based on that (still predicted, but optimised) model we performed docking with various substrates for which we also provide the obtained docking pose. Data from: Microwave-assisted synthesis of high thermal stability and colorless polyimides containing pyridine
A novel aromatic diamine containing pyridyl side group, 4-pyridine-4,4-bis(3,5-dimethyl-5-aminophenyl)methane (PyDPM), was successfully synthesized via electrophilic substitution reaction. The polyimides (PIs) containing pyridine were obtained via the microwave-assisted one-step polycondensation of the PyDPM with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), 3,3',4,4'-diphenylether tetracarboxylic dianhydride (ODPA) and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). Contrarily to the reported similar PIs, these PIs exhibit much higher thermal stability or heat resistance, i.e. high glass transition temperatures (Tgs) in the range of 358-473 °C, and the decomposition temperatures at 5% weight loss were over 476 °C under nitrogen. They can afford flexible and strong films with tensile strength of 82.1-93.3 MPa, elongation at break of 3.7%-15.2%, and Young's modulus of 3.3-3.8 GPa. Furthermore, The PI films exhibit good optical transparency with the cutoff wavelength at 313-366 nm and transmittance higher than 73% at 450 nm. The excellent thermal and optical transmittance can be attributed to synthesis method and the introduction of pyridine rings and ortho-methyl groups. The inherent viscosities of PIs via one-step method were found to be 0.58-1.12 dL g−1 in DMAc, much higher than those via two-step method. These results indicate these PIs could be potential candidates for optical substrates of OLEDs.
