In this calculation Argyroplecus was designated as the reference configuration and Sternoptyx the target configuration. It is instructive to compare the calculated thin plate spline representation of this deformation with Thompson's conceptual transformation grid for these same images (see Fig. 4). The total bending energy (= anisotropic deformation) is calculated as the sum of bending energies specified by the reference-to-target deformation at each landmark location and represents a useful means of quantifying shape variation within the sample. For this comparison the total bending energy is 1.25.
