Eddy covariance (EC) vertical carbon fluxes from a Georgia tidal salt marsh from 2014 to 2024

We present our methodology and data for science ready vertical carbon fluxes from a Spartina alterniflora tidal salt marsh as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research (GCE-LTER) site on Sapelo Island, Georgia, USA. Vertical carbon fluxes were measured through the eddy covariance (EC) method from 2014 to 2024. The EC flux tower was located on the western side of Sapelo Island bounded by the Duplin River and Barn Creek. The proportional influence of marsh habitats on the flux measurements were 4% tall, 38% short, and 58% medium height form Spartina alterniflora. We present the net ecosystem exchange (NEE), ecosystem respiration (ER), and gross primary production (GPP) at 30-minute fluxes (μmol CO2 m-2 s-1), daily averages (μmol CO2 m-2 s-1) and totals (g C m-2 day-1), and annual (g C m-2 year-1) quantities. We provide estimated uncertainty for each flux at each integrated timescale as 95% confidence intervals. Providing open access to 10-year carbon flux datasets can facilitate collaboration for advancing regional and global blue carbon synthesis and scale-up studies.

Comparing vertical accretion, organic carbon (C) sequestration, and nitrogen burial between a natural, never diked tidal salt marsh and a hydrologically restored tidal salt marsh on Sapelo Island, Georgia.

Restoration of tidal marshes throughout the 20th century have attempted to bring back important functions of natural tidal systems. In this study, vertical accretion, organic carbon (C) sequestration, and nitrogen burial were compared between a natural, never diked tidal salt marsh and a hydrologically restored tidal salt marsh on Sapelo Island, Georgia to examine the impacts of restoration years later. On Sapelo Island there are two marshes near the University of Georgia Marine Institute, one of which is a natural marsh, and one of which is a restored marsh. The restored marsh had been diked in 1948, and the dike was breached, allowing for the marsh to be restored, in 1956. Soil cores were collected from both marshes, and the sediments were analysed for Nitrogen and Carbon concentrations and bulk density. This analysis was used to determine accretion rates for the two marshes as well as changes in the restored marsh since the dike was breached. Nitrogen burial, carbon sequestration, and soil accretion in the restored marsh as compared to the natural marsh were the focus of this study.

Chamber level gas fluxes and soil biogeochemical properties from a tidal salt marsh and an impounded brackish wetland in South Carolina, USA

Archived data from a research project assessing the role of plants in driving methane fluxes from coastal wetland systems. Data collection occurred at the inland edge of a salt marsh and a diked, brackish impounded wetland in Georgetown County, South Carolina during 2022 and 2023. The first archived data table includes soil biogeochemical properties for all soil samples (0-10 cm and 10-50 cm mineral soil depth) collected approximately monthly from our two study sites. Specific biogeochemical properties include copy numbers of the mCRA gene, soil C and N concentrations, soil C:N ratios, soil moisture, pH, conductivity, organic matter content and alive and dead root biomass. The second archived data table includes methane and carbon dioxide fluxes from chambers over plants (whole-plant gas fluxes), adjacent to plants (plant-adjacent chambers) and in non-vegetated areas (non-vegetated fluxes) measured approximately monthly at our two study sites. Metadata associated with flux measurements are also included: leaf area, dead stems, oxidation reduction potential at four depths, atmospheric pressure, incoming solar radiation, relative humidity, chamber temperature, windspeed, water salinity, water temperature and water column depth.

Critical slowing down: vegetation height, cover and composition assess resilience of tidal fresh, brackish and salt marshes following experimental disturbance at twelve sites across the estuarine landscape

We investigated the relative recovery rates of vegetation cover, vegetation height and community composition over a period of >10 years after experimental disturbance in 12 tidal marshes (two oligohaline, three mesohaline and seven polyhaline sites) across the estuarine landscape on the coast of Georgia, USA. Vegetation was removed from three by three meter plots (four per site) with herbicide in 2006 followed by repeated clipping through 2009. Vegetation height, cover and composition was assessed in experimental and control plots (4 of each per site) from 2010 to 2020. The goal of the study was to assess how quickly the sites recovered from disturbance, how this varied in different types of marshes, and how results varied depending on whether recovery was assessed by vegetation height, cover or composition.

Effect of salt water intrusion on the distribution of invertebrates in a GA tidal freshwater marshes from the GCE Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) project.

To characterize the effect of persistent and episodic salt water intrusion on the distribution of common freshwater marsh invertebrates, we monitored the density of adult and juvenile fiddler crabs and snails. Prior to the start of salt water addition treatments, we collected data on the distribution of crabs and snails in all 30 experimental plots (6 replicates of 5 treatments: pressed salt water addition, pulsed salt water addition, fresh water addition, procedural control structure, and control no structure). In each experimental plot, we counted the number of adult and juvenile fiddler crab burrows and snails visible on the marshs surface in a 50cm x 75cm plot (juvenile fiddler crabs were counted in only half of this area) that was positioned in the Northeastern corner of each experimental plot. Initial data was collected in March 2014. A Bentho Torch was used to measure the concentrations of cyanobacteria, diatoms, and green algae on the marsh surface in 2015 and 2016.

May to July 2018 regions of interest (ROIs) of tidal marsh and tidal forest plant species to be used as ground reference data in habitat mapping

We collected field data from sites distributed in habitats along the salinity axis of the Altamaha River estuary and the Duplin River to be used as ground reference data for habitat mapping. Regions of interest (ROIs) for tidal marsh (salt, brackish, tidal fresh) and tidal fresh forest vegetation species were generated near ground control points (GCP) by digitizing vegetation areas in ArcGIS 10.4 based on field maps.These observations will be used to create habitat maps from aerial photographs of the Altamaha River estuary, GA taken following Hurricane Irma to better understand how the storm surge affected tidal vegetation and to examine any shifts in vegetation type.

Topobathymetric DEMs of Short Prong marsh and tidal flat in Hog Island Bay, VA 2022-2023

Seamless DEMs of the marsh edge and tidal flat at Short Prong in 2022 and 2023 were created using a combination of aerial photogrammetry and boat-mounted single-beam echosounding. Aerial photogrammetry surveys of the subaerial intertidal flat and marsh edge were completed during low tide using a DJI Phantom 4 RTK drone. Positioning was determined using six surveyed ground control points and drone on-board RTK. During high tide, a single beam echosounder was used to survey six cross-shore transects of the subtidal and one alongshore transect near the marsh edge. The same flight plan and echosounding survey path was used both years, with surveys taking place on 7/19/22 and 7/11/23. Photogrammetric data was processed in Agisoft Metashape to produce a DEM and a photomosaic. Echosounding data was processed in Hydromagic and interpolated using the natural neighbor method in GIS. Overlap of survey extent between photogrammetric and echosounding DEMs were stitched together in GIS to create seamless DEMs with a cellsize of 3 cm from the lower elevations of the marsh platform into the subtidal flat for 2022 and 2023.

Field survey and long-term measurements of biological, geomorphic, and hydrologic properties across ecosystem states in a non-tidal, salinizing peat marsh in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA, June 2018 - ongoing

This dataset package details a field survey and long-term measurements of biological, geomorphic, and hydrologic properties across ecosystem states found within a salinizing, non-tidal peat marsh in the coastal Everglades. There are four datasets included: FCE1250_Lamb_AltStableState_HydroGeo includes point measurements of soil surface elevation, bedrock elevation, soil depth, water depth, and porewater salinity across ecosystem states: emergent marsh (sawgrass dominated), submerged marsh (submerged aquatic vegetation), and unvegetated open water. The survey was conducted between November 2019 to January 2020. FCE1250_Lamb_AltStableState_Bio contains plot-scale (1 m^2) biological measurements from emergent marsh (sawgrass). Biological measurements (total sawgrass, average individual sawgrass biomass, and total sawgrass aboveground biomass), are inherently plot-level but geomorphic and hydrologic measurements were averaged (n = 3) for each plot. Standard deviations are provided. FCE1250_Lamb_AltStableState_Bio_LongTerm contains biological plot-scale (1 m^2) measurements at a bi-monthly timestep from Nov 2019 - July 2022 from a subset of plots (n = 9) included in the FCE_1250_Lamb_AltStableState_Bio dataset. Each bi-monthly measurement is the average value across all 9 nine plots. Standard deviations are also included. FCE_1250_Lamb_AltStableState_SETMH contains long-term measurements of soil surface elevation change and vertical accretion from surface elevation change and marker horizon plots from June 2018 - May 2023. Average and standard errors across all plots are included as well as measurements from each plot. Also included is the cumulative number of dry days based on the average soil surface elevation for all plots. Data collection for all datasets is complete, except for FCE_1250_Lamb_AltStableState_SETMH. SET-MH measurements are still ongoing.

Geographic coordinates, soil properties, plant species composition and vegetation survey data in the study on tidal marshes of the Ogeechee, Altamaha and Satilla estuaries in Georgia, USA

We examined patterns of habitat function (plant species richness), productivity (plant aboveground biomass and total C), and nutrient stocks (N and P in aboveground plant biomass and soil) in tidal marshes of the Satilla, Altamaha, and Ogeechee Estuaries in Georgia, USA. We worked at two sites within each salinity zone (fresh, brackish, and saline) in each estuary, sampling a transect from the creekbank to the marsh platform. Site-scale and plot-scale species richness decreased from fresh to saline sites. Standing crop biomass and total carbon stocks were greatest at brackish sites, followed by freshwater then saline sites.

May to July 2018 ground control points GPS coordinates of tidal marsh and tidal forest plant species to be used as ground control points in habitat mapping.

We collected field data from sites distributed in habitats along the salinity axis of the Altamaha River estuary and the Duplin River to be used as ground control points (GCP) and ground reference data for habitat mapping. GCPs for tidal marsh (salt, brackish, tidal fresh) and tidal fresh forest vegetation species were acquired. A real time kinematic (RTK) GPS survey of GPS coordinates and ground elevations for tidal marsh vegetation was carried out in May of June of 2018. A handheld GPS was used to collect GPS coordinates for tidal forest plant species in July of 2018. A total of 101 GCPs were collected in tidal habitats, with 26 in salt, 28 in brackish and 29 in tidal fresh marsh, and another 18 in tidal fresh forest. These observations will be used to create habitat maps from aerial photographs of the Altamaha River estuary, GA taken following Hurricane Irma to better understand how the storm surge affected tidal vegetation and to examine any shifts in vegetation type.

Methane and carbon dioxide flux in a tidal freshwater marsh recovering from three years of experimental seawater additions and following the Hurricane Irma storm surge

Methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) flux rates were measured in a tidal freshwater marsh using static flux chambers. The experimental field site, SALTEx (Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment) is part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER and is located on the Altamaha River, GA. The marsh was experimentally dosed with brackish water additions for 3 years, from 2014 – 2017. There are three treatments groups (Press, Pulse, and Fresh) and two control groups (with and without siding on the plots), each with six replicates. Press treatment plots received brackish water throughout the year, Pulse plots received brackish water in September and October and fresh water the rest of the year, Fresh plots received fresh river water throughout the year. The two control groups, one with siding on the plots and one without, received no water addition manipulations. All dosing ceased in January 2018, at which point we began to study the recovery of the marsh. In this study, the Hurricane Irma Rapid Grant evaluated additional effects of the Hurricane Irma storm surge that occurred in October 2017. Greenhouse gas measurements were taken seasonally beginning in March 2018 and ending in March 2019.

Demographics of high marsh consumers from Breder trap transect collections in tidal creeks associated with long term fertilization experiments, Rowley, MA

At PIE, mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) use the spring-cycle high tides to access the flooded high marsh platform and eat invertebrate prey, coupling the high marsh and aquatic creek food webs by gathering energy produced on the high marsh and making it available to the aquatic food web. Changes in the geomorphology of saltmarsh creek edges greatly influence the survival, biomass, and resource use of mummichog populations. Here, we capture animals using Breder traps to quantify the communities accessing the high marsh at night during one of these high tides in July 2018 across 3 PIE creeks known to present different geomorphologic patterns in their low marsh zones. These data can be used for the assessment of the impact of low marsh geomorphology on consumer communities in PIE marshes. Mummichog captured in these Breder traps were further analyzed for gut content (LTE-TIDE-BrederTrap-GutContents). These data were included in part of the study “Habitat decoupling via saltmarsh creek geomorphology alters connection between spatially-coupled food webs” (Lesser et al. 2020) and were a portion of an MBL REU project.

Invert species counts and density along transects on the high marsh along Rowley River tidal creeks associated with long term fertilization experiments, Rowley, MA.

At PIE, mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) use the spring-cycle high tides to access the flooded high marsh platform and consume invertebrate prey. Invertebrate surveys were conducted before and after spring tides that flooded the high marsh area to determine the effect of mummichog predation that occurs on the high marsh during the flood events and to assess the impact of low marsh geomorphology on top-down control by mummichog. These data were included in part of the study "Cross-habitat access modifies the ‘trophic relay’ in New England saltmarsh ecosystems” (Lesser et al. 2021) as well as a part of a NEU Three Seas Master's thesis.

These measurements are focused on creeks draining high and low elevation marsh systems to develop a better understanding of connectivity between aquatic production and consumption and coastal salt marshes. Production and respiration were determined by measuring oxygen changes in creek water incubated in light and dark bottles.

Global tidal marshes 2020 dataset

<p>Tidal marsh ecosystems are heavily impacted by human activities, highlighting a pressing need to address gaps in our knowledge of their distribution. To better understand the global distribution and changes in tidal marsh extent, and identify opportunities for their conservation and restoration, it is critical to develop a spatial knowledge base of their global occurrence. Here, we develop a globally consistent tidal marsh distribution map for the year 2020 at 10-m resolution.&nbsp;To map the location of the world&rsquo;s tidal marshes we applied a random forest classification model to earth observation data from the year 2020. We trained the classification model with a reference dataset developed to support distribution mapping of coastal ecosystems, and predicted the spatial distribution of tidal marshes between 60&deg;N to 60&deg;S. We validated the tidal marsh map using standard accuracy assessment methods, with our final map having an overall accuracy score of 0.852.&nbsp;We estimate the global extent of tidal marshes in 2020 to be 52,880 km<sup>2</sup> (95% CI: 32,030 to 59,780 km<sup>2</sup>) distributed across 120 countries and territories. Tidal marsh distribution is centred in temperate and Arctic regions, with nearly half of the global extent of tidal marshes occurring in the temperate Northern Atlantic (45%) region. At the national scale, over a third of the global extent (18,510 km<sup>2</sup>; CI: 11,200 &ndash; 20,900) occurs within the USA.&nbsp;Our analysis provides the most detailed spatial data on global tidal marsh distribution to date and shows that tidal marshes occur in more countries and across a greater proportion of the world&rsquo;s coastline than previous mapping studies. Our map fills a major knowledge gap regarding the distribution of the world&rsquo;s coastal ecosystems and provides the baseline needed for measuring changes in tidal marsh extent and estimating their value in terms of ecosystem services.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>This dataset accompanies the preprint&nbsp;<a href="http://doi.org/10.1101/2023.05.26.542433">https://doi.org/10.1101/2023.05.26.542433</a>&nbsp;</p>

Predicted Surficial Blue Carbon Maps for Blackbird Creek and St. Jones River Tidal Salt Marshes using 2014-2023 Landsat-8 OLI records

These data tables reflect the predictions of a gradient boosted trees model for predicting soil organic matter (SOM) in the surficial layer of tidal marsh soils. The model was trained on soil core data related to its corresponding spectral characteristics from decadal Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager data (see associated publication Warner et al. "Leveraging a decade of Landsat-8 spectral records for mapping blue carbon storage in tidal salt marshes"). This is a modeled data product designed to illustrate spatial patterns of organic matter storage as predicted by satellite data.
