Revealing Hidden Orbital Pseudospin Texture with Time-Reversal Dichroism in Photoelectron Angular Distributions

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of bulk 2H-WSe2 for different crystal orientations linked to each other by time-reversal symmetry. This dataset supplements a manuscript, and was used to measure a new observable called time-reversal dichroism in photoelectron angular distributions (TRDAD), which quantifies the modulation of the photoemission intensity upon effective time-reversal operation. Experimental results are in quantitative agreement with both tight-binding model and state-of-the-art fully relativistic calculations performed using the one-step model of photoemission, unambiguously demonstrating that TRDAD reveals its orbital pseudospin texture counterpart.

Figures of Influence of Time-Varying Atmospheric Channel on Time Reversal Spatial Power Combination of Sparse Array on Ground

A mathematical model of TR (Time Reversal) power combination in the slowly time-varying atmospheric channel and the concept of channel time-varying factor are proposed to study the feasibility of TR technique for spatial power combination in incompletely reciprocal channels. Combining the theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo simulations, we analyze the relationship between the power combination efficiency and the permittivity of the time-varying atmospheric channel, which follows a normal distribution.

In this data file, simulation results obtained by commercial software MATLAB are listed. The results indicate that the power combination efficiency of the TR technique will be lower than that of the completely reciprocal channel if the atmospheric channel is slowly varied, and the faster the channel changes, the lower the efficiency becomes. In order to keep the power combination efficiency above 50%, the channel time-varying factor needs to be less than about 54.3% of the signal period. And when it takes more than 90%, the signals radiated by each antenna have been completely incoherent at target point.

Supplementary material for: nQMaker: estimating time non-reversible amino acid substitution models

Amino acid substitution models are a key component in phylogenetic analyses of protein sequences. All commonly-used amino acid models available to date are time-reversible, an assumption designed for computational convenience but not for biological reality. Another significant downside to time-reversible models is that they do not allow inference of rooted trees without outgroups. In this paper, we introduce a maximum likelihood approach nQMaker, an extension of the recently published QMaker method, that allows the estimation of time non-reversible amino acid substitution models and rooted phylogenetic trees from a set of protein sequence alignments. We show that the non-reversible models estimated with nQMaker are a much better fit to empirical alignments than pre-existing reversible models, across a wide range of datasets including mammals, birds, plants, fungi, and other taxa, and that the improvements in model fit scale with the size of the dataset. Notably, for the recently published plant and bird trees, these non-reversible models correctly recovered the commonly estimated root placements with very high statistical support without the need to use an outgroup. We provide nQMaker as an easy-to-use feature in the IQ-TREE software (http://www.iqtree.org), allowing users to estimate non-reversible models and rooted phylogenies from their own protein datasets.

Superconducting diode effect under time reversal symmetry

In noncentrosymmetric superconductors, superconducting and normal conductions can interchange based on the current flow direction. This effect is termed a superconducting diode effect (SDE), which is a focal point of recent research. The broken inversion and time reversal symmetry is believed to be the requirements of SDE but their intrinsic role has remained elusive. Here, we report strain-controlled SDEs in a layered trigonal superconductor, PbTaSe2. The SDE was found exclusively in a strained device with its absence in an unstrained device, despite that it is allowed in unstrained trigonal structure. Moreover, the zero-field or magnetic field-even (magnetic field-odd) SDE is observed when the strain and current are along armchair (zigzag) direction The results unambiguously demonstrate the intrinsic SDE under time-reversal symmetry and the critical role of strain-induced electric polarization.

Data from: Ready to detect a reversal of time's arrow: a psychophysical study using short video clips in daily scenes

It is generally believed that time flows in one direction and that a reversal of time's arrow would render the external world nonsensical. We evaluated our ability to tell the direction of time's arrow in a wide range of dynamic scenes in our daily life by presenting 360 video clips in the correct or incorrect direction. Participants, who judged the direction in a speeded manner, erred in 39% of trials when a video was played in reverse, but in only 9% when it was played normally. Due to the bias favouring the "forward" judgement, reaction was generally faster for the forward response. However, the reaction became paradoxically faster and more synchronous for the detection of reversal in some critical occasions such as forward motion, free fall, diffusion, division, and addition of materials by hand. Another experiment with a fraction of the video clips revealed that reversal replay of these videos provided instantaneous evidence strong enough to overtake the forward judgment bias. We suggest that our brain is equipped with a system that predicts how the external organisms behave or move in these critical occasions and that the prediction error of the system contributes to the fast "reversal" detection.
