Trace Gas Fluxes and Soil N Dynamics in Simulated Hurricane Experiment at Harvard Forest 1989-1991

This study examined the fluxes of greenhouse gases between soils and the atmosphere in the Simulated Hurricane Experiment. The abstract from the published paper (see Methods) is reproduced below. "Fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4) between soils and the atmosphere were measured monthly for one year in a 77-year-old temperate hardwood forest following a simulated hurricane blowdown. Emissions of CO2 and uptake of CH4 for the control plot were 4.92 MT C ha-1 y-1 and 3.87 kg C ha-1 y-1, respectively, and were not significantly different from the blowdown plot. Annual N2O emissions in the control plot (0.23 kg N ha-1 y-1) were low and were reduced 78% by the blowdown. Net N mineralization was not affected by the blowdown. Net nitrification was greater in the blowdown than in the control, however, the absolute rate of net nitrification, as well as the proportion of mineralized N that was nitrified, remained low. Fluxes of CO2 and CH4 were correlated positively to soil temperature, and CH4 uptake showed a negative relationship to soil moisture. Substantial resprouting and leafing out of downed or damaged trees, and increased growth of understory vegetation following the blowdown, were probably responsible for the relatively small differences in soil temperature, moisture, N availability, and net N mineralization and net nitrification between the control and blowdown plots, thus resulting in no change in CO2 or CH4 fluxes, and no increase in N2O emission."

Trace gas mixing ratios measured over the Southern Ocean in the austral summer of 2016/2017, during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition.

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>The authors would highly appreciate to be contacted if the data is used for any purpose.</p> <p>We measured mixing ratios of CO, CO<sub>2</sub> and CH<sub>4</sub> with a PICARRO G2401 Gas Analyzer. Ozone (O<sub>3</sub>) mixing ratios were measured with a 2B Technology ozone monitor, model 205. We report five-minute averaged data cleaned from exhaust gas influence. Temporal coverage is from December 20, 2016 to April 10, 2017.</p> <p>The trace gas concentrations represent a large number of atmospheric processes that happen on different time scales. CO for example, has basically no sources other than combustion and can hence be used as tracer for air mass transport from regions with combustion activities (e.g., South Africa). CO has a lifetime of a few weeks. CO<sub>2</sub> and CH<sub>4</sub> are longer-lived trace gases which disperse globally. The data set shows that concentrations in the Northern Hemisphere are higher than in the Southern Hemisphere. Both trace gases are emitted by anthropogenic activities as well as natural sources. Over the cruise track, areas of the Southern Ocean were passed where these trace gases either outgas or are absorbed. Ozone is a secondary trace gas, meaning that it is formed in the atmosphere. Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Ice Storm Experiment Trace Gas

Trace gas fluxes were measured using the in situ chamber design similar to that described by Bowden and others (1990, 1991). Static gas soil sampling chambers (four per plot) of 20 cm diameter (ID) polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were placed on permanently installed PVC base rings immediately prior to measurement. At 0, 10, 20, and 30 min following placement of the chamber on the base, 8-mL gas samples were collected from gas sampling ports in the center of the chamber top by syringe. Samples were transferred to evacuated glass vials and stored at room temperature prior to analysis by gas chromatography (GC). CO2, N2O, and CH4 were analyzed on a Shimadzu GC-14 GC with thermal conductivity (CO2), electron capture (N2O), and flame ionization (CH4) detectors. These GC’s were capable of detecting ambient levels of these gases. Fluxes were calculated from the linear rate of change in gas concentration, the chamber internal volume and soil surface area. Flux rate calculations were not corrected for actual in situ temperature and pressure. Single points were removed from regressions if they were more than six times higher or lower than the other three values or if they contradicted a clear trend in the other three points. This procedure prevents inclusion of high flux rates based on non-significant regressions. Non-significant regressions were used in flux calculations to avoid biasing the statistical distribution of rates by setting all non-significant regressions to zero. Gas samples were collected prior to any icing treatment in September and October 2015, and then for 2 years after the icing treatments were initially applied (1st icing: 1/27/16; 2nd icing, only in MIDx2 plots: 1/14/17) in August 2016, July 2017, and October 2017.

Trace gas on the Resource Gradient Study at the Kellogg Biological Station, Hickory Corners, MI (2001 to 2003)

Dataset Abstract This study provides a gradient of nitrogen fertilization under rainfed and irrigated conditions. Nitrogen applications range from 0 to 291 kg N/ha . Plots are 5×30 m arranged in each of 4 replicate blocks. The crop rotation (wheat, corn, soybean) follows the pattern of the main site. The study started in 2002 as a rainfed only study on the south end of the main site. In 2005 a new rainfed and irrigated study was started at the south end of the lysimeter field. The original study site was discontinued in 2006. Crop yields, nitrous oxide and soil temperature, moisture and nitrogen data are available for this study. Treatments are numbered as follows: 1 = 0 kg N/ha, 2= 34 kg N/ha, 3= 67 kg N/ha, 4= 101 kg N/ha, 5= 134 kg N/ha, 6= 168 kg N/ha, 7 = 202 kg N/ha, 8= 246 kg N/ha, 9= 291 kg N/ha. original data source http://lter.kbs.msu.edu/datasets/79

Trace gas emissions from alpine tundra soils: Gas concentration data.

Trace gas samples were collected from 3 alpine tundra vegetation community types (dry meadow, moist meadow, wet meadow) on Niwot Ridge during the summer months of 1992 and 1993. In addition, samples were collected from a set of control and nitrogen amended plots in both dry and wet meadow community types. Soil temperatures were measured in conjunction with the trace gas sampling.
