Historic data of the national electricity system transitions in Europe in 1990–2019 for retrospective evaluation of models [dataset]

This data package supports empirical analysis of national electricity system transitions and retrospective evaluation of electricity system models in 1990–2019 in 31 European countries, including the EU27, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and the United Kingdom. The data package covers two types of content. Firstly, we provide an annotated list of 528 original data sources and references relevant for retrospective electricity system modeling with emphasis on open-access sources. Secondly, we provide a total of 1359 processed and harmonized data files in a format that is suitable as inputs to electricity system models. Four types of data files are included for each country: (i) a country file documenting national demand and economic data, (ii) technology files describing techno-economic data for each major generation technology in the country's electricity mix, (iii) resource files describing fuel prices and CO2 emissions for each fuel, and (iv) load profiles describing 24-hour national load curves for each available year. We provide these data files as comma-separated files to enable their wider reuse for retrospective evaluation of models as well as for empirical analyses of the European electricity system transitions.

Second column: Generalised Lomb-Scargle periodograms of the residuals (lcGLSRaw_3noSine.pdf, lcGLSRaw_4noSinerm.pdf, lcGLSRaw_30noSine.pdf, lcGLSRaw_31noSine.pdf) after removing the best fitting sinusoidal signals at the most significant frequency identified in the periodograms of the corresponding TESS time series. The long dashed red line marks the FAP at 0.1\%. Significant peaks are detected in the 6---8 day range, which we attribute to the presence of active regions co-rotating with the star.

Innovation Systems & Policy Insight 3_2022 "Responsible Research & Innovation approach for transitioning the traditional industry regions into digitalized industry territories"

In this ISP Insight Video, coordinator Marianne Hörlesberger tells you more about the EU Project DigiTeRRI which deals with a Responsible Research & Innovation Approach for transitioning the traditional industry regions into digitalised industry territories. The EU project DigiTeRRI empowers 3 traditional industry regions to harness the opportunities presented by digitalisation. The project has co-created a framework and roadmaps for a responsible transition to self-sustaining, digitalised industrial innovation ecosystems. It has worked out the challenges in the interplay between business, academia, government and society to initiate openness, democratic accountability and responsiveness in a process that will in turn promote resilience within these new, digitalised innovation ecosystems. Important attributes for this transition are also gender equality, science education, open access, public engagement, and ethics, which support both organisations and citizens in adapting the transformation that is revolutionising research, industry, economy, & society. Finally, 12 actions, based on the roadmap goals and objectives in each territory have been developed and implemented. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement nº 873010.

Using progress sets on non-deterministic transition systems for multiple UAV motion planning

In this demonstration, two Aerial Robotic Workers are given a surveillance task where the first drone (red circle) starts in the blue area, the second drone (blue circle) starts in the red area, and the drones need to infinitely often exchange their positions while avoiding collisions and avoiding leaving the flying area. A controller for the multi-agent system guaranteeing the satisfaction of this high-level task is synthesized by first considering a non-deterministic and finite abstraction of the dynamical system, and then using the notion of progress sets corresponding to sets of state-control pairs for which eventual progress towards the desired goal is guaranteed.

Three sex phenotypes in a haploid algal species give insights into the evolutionary transition to a self-compatible mating system

Mating systems of haploid species such as fungi, algae, and bryophytes are either heterothallic (self-incompatible) with two sex phenotypes (male and female, or mating type minus and plus in isogamous species) or homothallic (self-compatible) with only a bisexual phenotype producing zygotes within a clone. The anisogamous volvocine green alga Pleodorina starrii is a haploid species previously reported to have a heterothallic mating system. Here, we found that two additional culture strains originating from the same water system of P. starrii were taxonomically identified as P. starrii and produced male and female gametes and zygotes within a clone (bisexual). Sequences of rapidly evolving plastid genome regions were identical between the bisexual and unisexual (male or female) P. starrii strains. Intercrossings between the bisexual and unisexual strains demonstrated normal thick-walled zygotes and high survivability of F1 strains. Thus, these strains belong to the same biological species. P. starrii has a new haploid mating system that is unique in having three sex phenotypes; namely, male, female, and bisexual. Genetic analyses suggested the existence of autosomal "bisexual factor" locus independent of volvocine male and female determining regions. The present findings increase our understanding of the initial evolutionary step of transition from heterothallism to homothallism.

A Flat-lying Transitional Free Gas to Gas Hydrate System in a Sand Layer in the Qiongdongnan Basin of the South China Sea

Most marine gas hydrate systems follow a vertical pattern with gas hydrate overlying free gas. Here we document the discovery of a novel flat-lying transitional gas to hydrate system in a horizontal sand layer in the Qiongdongnan Basin of the South China Sea. Eight wells were drilled by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey in 2021-2022 to investigate the occurrence and mechanisms responsible for the formation of the system. We describe a free gas-bearing sand reservoir at the center of the system sustained by advecting hot fluids and gas; away from the advecting zone, the cooler, surrounding sand reservoir is filled with gas hydrate. Observations at this site show that temperature has a large control on hydrate formation in sands and may be a key mechanism which allows gas migration and hydrate formation in high-saturation hydrate filled sands.

Distribution. Brazilian Amazon, S of the Rio Amazonas, between the Tapajos/Juruena system and the Tocantins/Araguaia river system to the E, in the Brazilian states of Para and Mato Grosso; the exact S limit ofits distribution is unclear, but it seems likely that it coincides with the transition between the Amazon rainforest and the cerrado savannas of C Brazil; this ecotone encompasses headwaters of the Xingu and Tapajos river systems in N Mato Grosso. Vieira's Titi (C. vieirai) is also known to occur in this region, but there are too few records to confirm whether their distributions intergrade, or in fact where the exact limits of their distributions are. One recent study also found that the Red-bellied Titi may be absent from or present at extremely low densities in large areas of the Tocantins-Xingu interfluvium. Given the overall lack of records, while it is clear that the Red-bellied Titi occurs over a vast area of the SE Amazon Basin, the exact limits of its distribution within this area remain unclear. in Phitheciidae
