Demonstration of Ecosystem Management Options (DEMO) Study, western Oregon and Washington (post-treatment data, 1998-2016)
The Demonstration of Ecosystem Management Options (DEMO) Study is a regional-scale experiment in variable-retention harvest, established at six sites in western Oregon and Washington. Initiated in 1994, DEMO was designed to assess newly established standards and guidelines for regeneration harvests in mature, coniferous forests of the Pacific Northwest. The experiment is a randomized complete block design. It includes six treatments that represent strong contrasts in the level of retention (15-100% of original basal area) and the spatial pattern in which trees are retained (uniformly dispersed vs. aggregated in 1-ha patches). The factorial nature of the design (15 and 40% retention in both an aggregated and dispersed pattern) is unique among variable-retention experiments, regionally and globally. Long-term measurements of vegetation response lie at the core the DEMO Study. Key response variables include overstory tree growth and mortality, the dynamics of snags, regeneration of conifers (including planted seedlings and natural recruitment), and the composition, structure and diversity of the understory (including herbaceous, woody, and bryophyte species). Pre-treatment measurements were made between 1994 and 1996 (data are archived under Study Code TP104). Post-treatments measurements have occurred at ~5- to 7-year intervals between 1998 and 2016 (data are archived under Study Code TP108).
Impacts of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid After Preventative Treatment in Lincoln MA 2015-2018
In 2007 the town of Lincoln, MA treated the hemlock stand at the Codman estate with root injections of imidacloprid to suppress the invasive insect Hemlock Wooly Adelgid (HWA). This hemlock grove is unique for this area of Massachusetts and dominated by eastern hemlock of approximately 2 feet in diameter with many trees reaching heights of over 120 feet. The treatment goal was to conserve the trees and the stand’s cathedral-like characteristics. To accomplish this goal, every big canopy tree was treated.
Long-term soil properties after different biochar feedstock treatments in a Southwest Virginia Pasture, 2024
Biochar is an agricultural amendment that can improve soil health and promote carbon (C) sequestration. Effects of biochar can vary and depend on the biochar feedstock, method of production, soil conditions, and amendment method and frequency. These data include soil physicochemical properties from plots amended with hay, softwood, and hardwood biochar types produced under similar conditions (479°C – 522°C for 3.5-10.2 hours) with and without a nitrogen addition (porcine blood meal) in a randomized complete block design after 4.5 years. Plots were first established at the Virginia Tech Catawba Sustainability Center in Catawba, VA in June of 2019 and sampled in March 2024. Soil measurements include total nitrogen, total carbon, carbon:nitrogen ratios, gravimetric moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (NO3 and NH4), bulk density, and moisture from bulk density measurements. These data contribute to a long-term understanding of different biochar feedstock effects on Southwest Virginia pasture soils.
Demographic census data for four perennial plants under experimental pollination treatments
These demographic data were collected to measure the effects of manipulated pollination treatments on the population dynamics of four iteroparous perennial plant species: Delphinium nuttallianum (Ranunculaceae), Hydrophyllum fendleri (Boraginaceae [Hydrophyllaceae]), Erigeron speciosus (Asteraceae), and Potentilla pulcherrima (Roseaceae). The pollination treatments consisted of Control corresponding to ambient pollination, Reduced for which 50% of open flowers on each individual were enclosed in mesh to exclude pollinators, Supplemented for which all receptive flowers were hand pollinated with outcross pollen, and Variable for which individuals received the Reduced treatment in ca. 50% of years. The full life cycle was characterized from at least four annual demographic censuses of tagged plants between 2017-2022, germination rates estimated in seed addition plots, and soil seed bank survival estimated from buried seed bags.
Long-term monitoring and research of the ecology of the Tres Rios constructed treatment wetland, Phoenix, Arizona, USA, ongoing since 2011
# Project Description In order to better understand the water, nutrient and treatment dynamics of aridland constructed treatment wetlands, we have developed datasets tracking primary productivity (aboveground and belowground), nutrient and water budget dynamics, soils, and aquatic metabolism at the Tres Rios wetlands, operated by the City of Phoenix Water Services Department, since July 2011. The 3-cell Tres Rios Wetlands were completed in 2010 and are associated with the 91st Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant, the largest in Phoenix. This project is focused on the largest of the three wetlands treatment cells which was the first to be planted and became operational in Summer 2010. The wetland cells are bounded by roads (the "shoreline"), and the system we study is 42 ha in size, approximately half of which is open water and half of which is fringing vegetated marsh. Water depth is relatively consistent across the marsh (approximately 25cm) and effluent inflow to the cell varies seasonally from 95,000 to over 270,000 m3 d-1. Measurements are taken along two gradients representing the two hydraulic pathways of the system: The whole-system, from inflow to outflow, within the vegetated marsh itself. # Abstract Constructed treatment wetlands (CTW) provide cost effective and ecosystem-service based solutions to the problem of urban wastewater treatment. They are a particularly attractive option for water reuse in arid cities, where water resources are scarce, and understanding CTW function in these environments is critical to facilitating sustainable water use practices. Although CTW are well established and studied in mesic climates, how they function in and respond to hot, arid climates is comparatively not well understood. Grass seedling survival and microhabitat vegetation cover among herbivore exclusion treatments across grassland-shrubland ecotones at 3 sites, 2022 and 2023
The aim of this study is to reveal how mammalian herbivores differentially affect the survival of grass seedlings depending on herbivore taxa (cattle, oryx, lagomorphs, rodents) and microhabitat vegetation structure surrounding grass seedlings. This dataset includes data tracking the survival of grass seedlings among herbivore exclusion treatments across grassland, ecotone, and shrubland habitats. Seedling survival trials were established at 3 spatial blocks associated with the Ecotone Study: JER Pastures 9 and 12, and CDRRC Pasture 3. Survival trials were conducted on Pasture 12 in 2022, and on Pastures 3, 9, and 12 in 2023. Each spatial block contained 3 sites (grassland, ecotone, shrubland) that were further subdivided into 5 replicate plots (n = 45 plots). Two trays (1 control open to all herbivores, 1 caged allowing only rodent access) of 25 seedlings each were buried at ground level at each plot and their condition (i.e., alive & undamaged, alive & herbivore damaged, senesced or absent via herbivory, senesced due to environmental stress, resprouted following herbivory, unknown fate, or herbivory following senescence) recorded every 3 days for a total of 15 days. Microhabitat vegetation cover surrounding the seedling trays was collected using ocular estimates of cover across plant functional types (e.g., perennial grasses, forbs, sub-shrubs, shrubs, etc.) within 1 square-meter PVC quadrats placed on both the east and west face of seedling trays established in the field. Maximum height of vegetative (non-reproductive) plant tissue of each functional type was additionally recorded to gauge the level of grass seedling concealment.

Evaluating rose yield responses to compost treatments: Data from an 18-month field study in Kenya
<p>This dataset and these scripts supports the manuscript 'Modelling cut rose yield after compost amendment over an 18-month period using repeated sigmoidal Gompertz curve fitting' by Evy de Nijs, Roland Bol, Albert Tietema & Emiel van Loon. </p> <p>Roses are an important crop for the floricultural sector of Kenya. Roses are a perennial crop and under continuous production for six to ten years. To optimize rose production, it is essential to understand how different management practices impact yield over time. This dataset contains a detailed record of rose yield data collected in an 18-month large-scale field experiment. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of pre-planting compost amendment on the yield and quality of cut roses. It was conducted in a polythene greenhouse near lake Naivasha, Kenya. Yield data included the number of stems harvested per day per flowering bed. Data presented here offer a comprehensive view of the impacts of different compost treatments on the yield of cut roses. Combined with the offered scripts, this is the framework presented in the aforementioned manuscript. Patellar Tendon Load Progression during Rehabilitation Exercises: Implications for the Treatment of Patellar Tendon Injuries
<h3><strong>Purpose </strong></h3><p>To evaluate patellar tendon loading profiles (loading index, based on loading peak, loading impulse, and loading rate) of rehabilitation exercises to develop clinical guidelines to incrementally increase the rate and magnitude of patellar tendon loading during rehabilitation.</p><h3><strong>Methods </strong></h3><p>Twenty healthy adults (10 females/10 males, 25.9 ± 5.7 years) performed 35 rehabilitation exercises, including different variations of squats, lunge, jumps, hops, landings, running, and sports specific tasks. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected and a patellar tendon loading index was determined for each exercise using a weighted sum of loading peak, loading rate, and cumulative loading impulse. Then, the exercises were ranked, according to the loading index, into tier 1 (loading index≤0.33), tier 2 (0.33 < loading index<0.66), and tier 3 (loading index≥0.66).</p><h3><strong>Results </strong></h3><p>The single-leg decline squat showed the highest loading index (0.747). Other tier 3 exercises included single-leg forward hop (0.666), single-leg countermovement jump (0.711), and running cut (0.725). The Spanish squat was categorized as a tier 2 exercise (0.563), as was running (0.612), double-leg countermovement jump (0.610), single-leg drop vertical jump (0.599), single-leg full squat (0.580), double-leg drop vertical jump (0.563), lunge (0.471), double-leg full squat (0.428), single-leg 60° squat (0.411), and the Bulgarian squat (0.406). Tier 1 exercises included 20 cm step up (0.187), 20 cm step down (0.288), 30 cm step up (0.321), and double-leg 60° squat (0.224).</p><h3><strong>Conclusions </strong></h3><p>Three patellar tendon loading tiers were established based on a combination of loading peak, loading impulse, and loading rate. Clinicians may use these loading tiers as a guide to progressively increase patellar tendon loading during the rehabilitation of patients with patellar tendon disorders and after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using the bone patellar tendon bone graft.</p>
Dataset for Gate-to-Gate Life Cycle Assessment of Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Pre-Treatment
<p>Recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is crucial for improving environmental sustainability and conserving resources. Due to the diversity of LIB applications and recycling technologies, the environmental and energy impacts are not well understood. Comprehensive assessments must consider the distinct operations, methodologies, technology efficiency, and final treatment of materials. This study provides a partial gate-to-gate life cycle analysis (LCA) of a small-scale recycling plant in the Czech Republic, focusing on pre-treatment of spent LIBs from electric vehicles (EVs) and consumer electronics cells (CECs). The study highlights the benefits of recycling pre-treatment for CECs, significantly reducing environmental impact categories (EICs) such as climate change, eutrophication, and resource use. A high secondary use rate of obtained materials is crucial for environmental benefits, with metal reuse from packaging, connectors, and current collectors being especially important.</p>

Leaf digestibility under rainfall manipulated treatments in the C3 and C4 plant communities (South Dakota, 2020-2022)
The leaf samples were collected from a randomized block two-factor split plot experiment with two precipitation-manipulation treatments (small size frequent events, and large size infrequent events, with constant total size) and two aboveground plant communities (C3 and C4 grasses) with five replications in western South Dakota, USA. The dominated C3 grass is western wheatgrass [Pascopyrum smithii (Rydb.) A. Love], and the dominated C4 grasses are buffalograss [Bouteoula dactyloides (Nutt.) J.T. Columbus] and blue gramma [Bouteoula gracilis (Willd. ex Kunth) Lag. ex Griffiths]. The samples was collected within sampling quadrat by hand at the end of each month from May to September, 2020-2022, then dried immediately at 80˚C for 7 days. Dried samples were grinded into <1mm by bead beater. We used the sequential fiber analysis protocol (ANKOM Technology) and an ANKOM fiber analyzer to measure and calculate the neutral detergent fiber (NDF), the acid detergent fiber (ADF), and acid detergent lignin (ADL) of the grinded leaf samples. The final data contained both concentration and content of different fibers in the leaf samples.
Oak litter decomposition parameters across 19 Nutrient Network grassland sites in response to NPK and herbivore exclusion treatments
These data are from a study examining how herbivory and nutrient supply affect long-term aboveground decomposition. A novel oak litter was decomposed across 19 grassland sites of the Nutrient Network distributed experiment. At each site, a full-factorial experiment of combined nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium plus micronutrients ('control' or 'NPK') and mammalian herbivore exclusion ('fencing') was carried out in a randomized block design. The duration of the decomposition experiment varied by site but litter bags were harvested at approximately annual intervals for up to seven years. Litter decay parameters were calculated using four alternative statistical models of litter decomposition. Covariate data describing site and plot-level abiotic and biotic characteristics were also measured, including climate, atmospheric nitrogen deposition, live and dead aboveground biomass, and percent cover.
Tree Health Conditions (mortality, damage, disease, bark beetles) in Fuel Reduction Treatments Located Near Communities in Interior Alaska and the Cook Inlet Region of Alaska - Observations from July-August 2023
This dataset contains tree-, transect-, and site-level observations of forest stands at sites that received a fuel reduction treatment. Tree-level observations include species, diameter, living status, damage, disease, and bark beetle presence. Transect-level observations include level of coarse woody debris and bark beetle presence. Sites are categorized by region (recent/ongoing spruce beetle oubreak or endemic spruce beetle population levels) and treatment type (hand-thinned or mechanincally felled and masticated). These observations are from July-August 2023. Sites are located near communities in Interior Alaska and the Cook Inlet Region.
Regional drinking water quality monitoring program: long-term monitoring of water quality in select canals, reservoirs, and treatment plants of the greater Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area drinking water system, ongoing since 1998
Regional Drinking Water Quality Monitoring Program ================================================== Arizona Statue University (ASU) has been working with regional water providers (Salt River Project (SRP), Central Arizona Project (CAP)) and metropolitan Phoenix cities since 1998 on algae-related issues affecting drinking water supplies, treatment, and distribution. The results have improved the understanding of taste and odor (T&O) occurrence, control, and treatment, improved the understanding of dissolved organic and algae dynamics, and initiated a forum to discuss and address regional water quality issues. The monitoring benefits local Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) by optimizing ongoing operations (i.e., reducing operating costs), improving the quality of municipal water for consumers, facilitating long-term water quality planning, and providing information on potentially future-regulated compounds. ASU has been monitoring water quality in terminal reservoirs (Lake Pleasant, Saguaro Lake, and Bartlett Lake) continuously from 1998 to the present for algae-related constituents (taste and odors, and more recently metals from the upper reservoirs), nutrients, and disinfection by-product precursors (i.e., total and dissolved organic carbon and organic nitrogen). Additional monitoring has been conducted in the SRP and CAP canal systems and in water treatment plants in Phoenix, Tempe and Peoria. During this work the Valley has been in a prolonged drought and recently one above average wet year, and this data provides important baseline data for development of new or expanded WTPs and management of existing WTPs in the future. The current work has improved the understanding of T&O sources and treatment, but additional research and monitoring into the future is necessary. Influence of Atmospheric Air Plasma Pre-Treatment of Veneers on the Mechanical Properties and Stability of Beech Plywood
<p>Wood-based sheet materials such as plywood, fiberboard, particleboard, and oriented strain board find applications in civil engineering, building technology, furniture manufacturing and many more. All these materials rely strongly on an effective bond formation between the resin and the wood base material, which gives rise to their mechanical performance and stability, as well as their resistance to moisture and liquids. In our study, we present the use of a commercial atmospheric air plasma system, which we used for the pretreatment of veneers of common beech (<em>Fagus sylvatica</em> L.) wood before formation of plywood boards. Plasma treatment parameters were optimized following the change in water contact angle. Two different stacking patterns were used for plasma-treated veneers. The time stability of the plasma modification was investigated by forming a second set of plywood boards 70 hours after plasma treatment of the respective veneers. The influence of the plasma treatment on mechanical properties was studied via bending and shear strength of the four sets of plasma-treated boards in comparison to a plywood out of the same veneer without plasma treatment. Water and moisture resistance were tested through water immersion and surface water resistance tests. Further, confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to determine changes of the surfaces’ morphologies.</p>
Dataset from "In silico assessment of collateral eddy current heating in biocompatible implants subjected to magnetic hyperthermia treatments"
<p>This dataset from the publication entitled "Dataset from "In silico assessment of collateral eddy current heating in biocompatible implants subjected to magnetic hyperthermia treatments" contains simulated data of magnetic hyperthermia treatments for three different indications: colorectal cancer, prostate cancer and head & neck cancer. Since the aim of the study is to evaluate the risk of thermal damage caused by the collateral heating of two common types of passive prostheses (hip and dental implants), eddy currents induced in these implants upon interacting with the externally applied ac field during treatment have been computed for all the evaluated regions. Two different alloys for the implants have been considered for each case as well: Ti6Al4V and CoCrMo. At the same time, besides temperature, the specific abosorption rate (SAR) have been also computed to work out the energy deposition in tissues.</p> <p>Calculations have been carried out using a het exchange model with and without thermoregulation.</p> <p>log-log SAR vs T plots have been obtained and proposed as a quick means to pre-check treatment feasibility in each patient. These graphs are thought to be included in treatment planning prior to the clinical procedure.</p> <p>Other parameters taken into account have been the treatment time (5 and 30 minutes), and the maximum tolerable temperature threshold (1 or 5 ºC, as indicated by the ICNIRP commission), all for three main types of tissues, namely fat, bone and muscle. Each tissue have been simulated using three different field intensities (5, 10 and 15 mT).</p> <p>The field frequency has been 300 kHz in all cases.</p> <p>The files "Dataset_description.doc" and "file_scheme.txt" contain the structure and description of the files that make up the dataset.</p> <p>UPDATES FROM PREVIOUS VERSIONS: simulations of the dental implant without thermoregulation have been added.</p>
