White spruce seedlings have colonized the site of the Coldfoot transplant garden (CF, 67°15′32″N, 150°10′12″W) since the original garden was established in 1982. Some trees are 2-3 meter tall. All seedlings and trees within the current (2014) garden were tagged, located with a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, and measured in 2015 and 2016 for total height and girth at 10 centimeter height and leader length.

These data represent the most recent set of observations (made in 2002 by J. Kuskokwim River Floodplain: White Spruce (Picea glauca) annual tree-ring width measurements (mm) at breast height from tree-core samples taken above Red Devil on the Kuskokwim River in July, 2007
This dataset contains annual raw ring width measurements in the Tucsan (decadal format) (.rwl file extension) of 14 large white spruce trees growing within 50m of the Kuskokwim River. Ring-widths were measured to 0.001mm on a velmex laser micrometer and accuracy was checked by crossdating using COFECHA. Annual values were measured from 1779-2006.
L4E - Maximum tree height extracted from LiDAR transects over the Brazilian Amazon
<p>Between 2016 and 2018, the EBA airborne missions (conducted by the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE) and funded by Amazon Fund) collected airborne lidar transects of 375 ha (12.5 x 0.3 km) each. A majority of the transects were flown over randomly selected locations of old growth and second growth as forests defined by the PRODES and TerraClass databases (PRODES, INPE, 2016; TerraClass, INPE, 2014). PRODES separates forests from non-forest while TerraClass identifies second growth forest and other land covers.</p>
1-km forest tree height, cover, plant area index, and foliage height diversity for the CONUS
<p>Consistent and spatially explicit periodic monitoring of forest structure is essential for estimating forest-related carbon emissions, analyzing forest degradation, and supporting sustainable forest management policies. To date, few products are available that allow for continental to global operational monitoring of changes in canopy structure. In this study, we explored the synergy between the NASA’s spaceborne Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) waveform LiDAR and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) data to produce spatially explicit and consistent annual maps of canopy height (CH), percent canopy cover (PCC), plant area index (PAI), and foliage height diversity (FHD) across the conterminous United States (CONUS) at 1-km resolution for 2013-2020. The accuracies of the annual maps were assessed using forest structure attribute derived from airborne laser scanning (ALS) data acquired between 2013 and 2020 for the 48 National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) field sites distributed across the CONUS. The root mean square error (RMSE) values of the annual canopy height maps as compared with the ALS reference data varied from a minimum of 3.31-m for 2020 to a maximum of 4.19-m for 2017. Similarly, the RMSE values for PCC ranged between 8% (2020) and 11% (all other years). Qualitative evaluations of the annual maps using time series of very high-resolution images further suggested that the VIIRS-derived products could capture both large and “more” subtle changes in forest structure associated with partial harvesting, wind damage, wildfires, and other environmental stresses.</p>
Geographic variation of tree height of Pinus pinea L. gathered from common gardens in Europe
<p>This dataset collects individual georeferenced tree height data from <em>Pinus pinea </em>L. planted in common gardens in France and Spain, between years 1993 and 1997. The experimental design varies depending on the common garden, from a randomized complete to incomplete block design, RCB or RIB, respectively. The final dimensions of this database is 56,624 individual tree height measurements <em> </em>with 9 common gardens and 55 different provenances. The data can be used to assess genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity with further applications in biogeography and forest management. </p>

Tree inventory data such as tree identity, position in the plot, height, architecture and biomass on Mt. Kilimanjaro
<p>This dataset describes position and sizes of all trees above 10 cm diameter at breast height in all plots, also fruiting and flowering events and if it is a canopy tree or not in KiLi project. -999999 represents NA in numeric variables. </p> <p>Within each plot, all trees wider than 10 cm diameter at breast height (dbh) were marked with aluminium tags and their dbh and height were measured. The dbh was measured with a diameter tape (Forestry Suppliers, USA) at 1.3 m for normally shaped trees and 20 cm below or above when branches or irregular shapes impeded measurement at that height. The 1.3 m height was measured from the highest ground level around the stem to standardize measurements taken on slopes. For trees which were strongly buttressed or too big to measure by hand, a laser dendrometer (Criterion RD 1000 with TruPulse 200/200, Centennial, USA) was used to measure the tree above the buttresses and at 1.3 m. Lianas above 10 cm in diameter were also marked and their dbh was measured. Tree height was measured using an ultra-sonic hypsometer (Vertex IV Hypsometer, Haglöf, Langsele, Sweden) or a laser rangefinder (TruPulse 200/200). The tree inventories were carried out between December 2010 and March 2013.</p> <p>The KiLi project (2010-2018) is a German Science Foundation (DFG) funded research unit (DFG research unit FOR1246) that focuses on biodiversity and ecosystem processes along altitudinal and disturbance gradients on Mt. Kilimanjaro (Tanzania, Africa), capitalizing on its world-wide unique range of climatic and vegetation zones. The research unit comprises 2 central projects and 7 subprojects from various disciplines. On a total of 60 study sites in both natural and human-disturbed ecosystems biodiversity (e.g. plants, soil arthropods, ants, bees, frogs, lizards, bats, birds), related ecosystem processes (decomposition, seed dispersal, pollination, herbivory, predation), and biogeochemical processes and properties of ecosystems (climate, soil properties and nutrient status, regulation of water and carbon fluxes, trace gas emissions, primary productivity, functional diversity) are analyzed.</p>
Species, DBH, and height of overstory trees in a chronosequence of reforested urban sites, Lexington, KY, USA
Urban reforested areas located in Lexington, Kentucky were evaluated over the course of summer 2020. This dataset contains information on tree species, height, DBH, and snag class across twenty urban reforestation sites planted as part of the Reforest the Bluegrass program in Lexington, KY. At least three plots (and up to nine plots) were established in each site, with additional plots added if forested patches were sufficiently large. At each plot, we established a 0.008-ha (0.02-ac) circular sampling plot and recorded the species, diameter at breast-height (DBH), and total height of each tree ≥2.5 cm (1 in) DBH. DBH was measured to the nearest 0.25 cm (0.1 in) using a DBH tape, and tree height was measured to the nearest 0.1 m using a laser hypsometer (Nikon Forestry Pro II) or telescoping height pole. These data provide a critical baseline for understanding tree growth on reforested urban sites.
Species and height of understory trees and shrubs in a chronosequence of reforested urban sites, Lexington, KY USA.
This dataset contains information on soil physical and chemical characteristics across twenty urban reforestation sites planted as part of the Reforest the Bluegrass program in Lexington, KY. Urban reforested areas located in Lexington, Kentucky were evaluated over the course of summer 2020. At least three plots (and up to nine plots) were established in each site, with additional plots added if forested patches were sufficiently large. At each plot, we established a 0.002-ha (0.005-ac) circular sampling plot to survey woody understory species, respectively. Height and species of all woody plants <2.5 cm DBH and ≥30 cm tall were tallied to the nearest 0.5 cm with a telescoping height pole. These data will contribute to understanding of understory stand dynamics in developing urban forests.
Dendrometer studies for stand volume and height measurements of trees of the western US, 1976 to 1993
Dendrometry is used to get an accurate estimate of volume and height for individual trees. Volume tables or regressions may be generated. This method accurately accounts for taper by measuring at consecutive points up the bole.
Tree heights and diameters: Wickersham fire sites (at the Viereck thaw probe locations), 1995 and 2004
In June of 1971, the Wickersham fire burned 6313 ha in an open black spruce forest underlain with permafrost and provided an opportunity to study fire and fireline effects on the rate and patterns of permafrost, soil, and vegetation recovery. When wildfire burns through a northern black spruce forest the degree of soil organic layer consumption greatly influences the post-fire community characteristics. The construction of firelines with heavy machinery involves the complete removal of vegetation and the soil organic layer down to mineral soil and likewise affects the community characteristics after fire and fire suppression. This long-term study is part of a comparison between the vegetative communities of firelines, burned, and unburned open black spruce forests underlain by ice rich permafrost. In this study, tree diameters and heights were measured in an unburned control plot and in a heavily burned plot. There were no trees to measure in the fireline plot. Tree heights and diameters at breast height were measured for tree species in the heavily burned and unburned control sites on the east side of Cushman Creek of the Wickersham Fire Sites. This dataset focuses on the trees of the east side sites (2004 and 2130) to corroborate the detailed studies of active layer depths and fireline surface level changes previously published (Viereck, 1982; also see datasets in related material section) and in preparation.

Tree stem diameter and height of Araucaria araucana, Nothofagus pumilio and Nothofagus dombeyi in mixed stands affected to different levels by anthropogenic disturbance in south-central Chile
<p><em><strong>Context: </strong></em>Around half of the <em>Araucaria-Nothofagus</em> forests in Chile are affected by anthropogenic disturbances such as logging, grazing, and seed harvesting, causing forest structure to become more heterogeneous. This can critically affect natural regeneration and stand development. It also challenges forest management and yield estimations, involving tree height predictions. The data allow to assess the impact of anthropogenic disturbances on forest structure and to identify optimal tree height models and calibration designs. Based on the data provided, a general workflow for this purpose was developed and published on GitHub as R software (Zhou & Zwanzig 2022).</p> <p><em><strong>Location: </strong></em>Mixed <em>Araucaria-Nothofagus</em> forests of the Andes Cordillera in the Araucaria Region in south-central Chile. Latitude, longitude and altitude of the plots is provided in the data table.</p> <p><em><strong>Taxon:</strong></em> Monkey Puzzle tree (<em>Araucaria araucana</em> (Molina) K.Koch), Lenga Beech (<em>Nothofagus pumilio</em> (Poepp. & Endl.) Krasser), Coigue (<em>Nothofagus dombeyi</em> (Mirb.) Oerst.)</p> <p><em><strong>Methods:</strong></em> A total of twelve stands were studied at four different sites and classified into four different intensities of anthropogenic disturbance depending on the intensity of the combined effects of logging, grazing and seed harvesting. In 25 to 36 plots per stand, horizontal point sampling measurements of stem diameter as well as of height of selected trees were carried out using a basal area factor of 4 m² per hectare.
