Tree seedling abundance mediated by local neighborhood effects and microsite conditions

Tree recruitment across elevational gradients is shaped by myriad factors, including abundance of nearby conspecific adults and abiotic establishment conditions. We measured seedling abundance and overstory basal area for six tree species that dominate northern temperate and montane boreal forests on mountains in the northeastern United States. Data were collected on elevational transects spaced at 100m-intervals of elevation on ten mountains. Associated environmental variables, including vegetation cover, substrate, microclimate, and light environment, were also collected.

Tree Seedlings in CRUI Land Use Project at Harvard Forest 1996

Forests recovering from agricultural legacies differ in many ways that influence tree seed dispersal and seedling establishment patterns. We recorded the number of seedlings (less than 0.5 m tall) of all tree species on a 1 x 1 m resolution across six land use legacy sites (2 plowed, 2 pastured, 2 permanent woodlot) in summer 1996 to test several predictions about seedling abundance, diversity, and dispersion patterns, and their relationships to forest structure, microclimates, and soil resources.

Alaska 2004 Burns: Growth and survival of tree seedlings in post-fire experimental transplant study across 39 sites

This dataset contains measurements of tree seedlings growth for an experimental transplant study started in 2005 at sites that burned in 2004 in interior Alaska. Records are from a set of 39 intensive study sites that were formerly dominated by black spruce along the Steese, Taylor, and Dalton highways. Seedlings were monitored for 10 years, with detailed measurements in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013, and 2015. Aboveground biomass was harvested in 2011.

Tree regeneration after fire: Yukon Lodgepole Pine Surveys, seedlings analysis

This dataset documents pre- and post-fire tree composition of stands along the current range edge of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta ssp. latifolia) in the Yukon Territory. The objective of the study was to evaluate whether pine populations at the range edge appear to be expanding in association with fire disturbance. This dataset has been published as: Jill F. Johnstone and F. Stuart Chapin, 2003. Non-equilibrium succession dynamics indicate continued northern migration of lodgepole pine. Global Change Biology, 9(10): 1401-1409. Post-fire seedling count data, made in 2x50m belt transects (all live seedlings/saplings).

This study examines the effects of burn severity on patterns of post-fire tree establishment in the boreal forest. We collected data from 5 separate field experiments examining seedling establishment across different severity levels in 4 burns in central Yukon Territory, Canada, and interior Alaska, USA. The experimental studies focus on the germination, survival, and growth responses of four common tree species, trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides), lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), white spruce (Picea glauca) and black spruce (Picea mariana). Data on the soil organic layer (depth, moisture, bulk density, pH) were also collected at each site. This file contains data on seedlings that germinated in the severity plots, for seeded and un-seeded (control) subplots. Data from the control subplots has been standardized by area (seedlings/subplot, where the subplot area=0.28 m2), and could be used to estimate natural rates of seedling establishment. Control values are the same for black and white spruce, as these species could not be distinguished.

This file contains data on total aboveground dry biomass of germinated seedlings harvested in late August, 2002. Seedlings are separated into those found in seeded subplots (target), non-seeded control plots (ctl), or partially-seeded control plots (seed-ctl, where plots were seeded in Sept 2000 but not June 2000). Cohorts indicate the year in which the seedlings were first observed. All seedlings of a species*cohort within a subplot were weighed together, and the average weight/seedling calculated. Note that a plot entry is included in the file only where a seedling was present.

Note that there are no data for white spruce at the Carmacks site.

Dataset from : Browsing is a strong filter for savanna tree seedlings in their first growing season

<p>1: Newly germinated seedlings are vulnerable to biomass removal but usually have at least six months to grow before they are exposed to dry-season fires, a major disturbance in savannas. In contrast, plants are exposed to browsers from the time they germinate, making browsing potentially a very powerful bottleneck for establishing seedlings. 2: Here we assess the resilience of seedlings of 10 savanna tree species to top-kill during the first 6 months of growth. Newly-germinated seeds from four dominant African genera from across the rainfall gradient were planted in a common garden experiment at the Wits Rural Facility and clipped at 1 cm when they were ~2, 3, 4, and 5 months old. Survival, growth, and key plant traits were monitored for the following 2.5 years. 3: Seedlings from environments with high herbivory pressure survived top-kill at a younger age than those from low-herbivore environments, and more palatable genera had higher herbivore-tolerance. Most individuals that survived were able to recover lost biomass within 12 months, but the clipping treatment affected root mass fraction and branching patterns. 4: Synthesis: The impact of early browsing as a demographic bottleneck can be predicted by integrating information on the probability of being browsed and the probability of surviving a browse event. Establishment limitation through early-browsing is an under-recognised constraint on savanna tree species distributions. Tree regeneration after fire: Delta 1994 burn surveys, live spruce seedling diameters

Data for this study were collected in 2001 and 2002 by Jill Johnstone (University of Alaska Fairbanks) and Eric Kasischke (University of Maryland). Sites were located within the perimeter of the 1994 burn southeast of Delta Junction Alaska, USA, bordering the Alaska Highway to the North and the Gerstle River to the West. Sites were selected from satellite classifications prepared by Eric Kasischke to represent different levels of burn severity and post-fire vegetation canopy greenness (NDVI). Site selection was constrained by road access, and only areas where all trees had been killed by the fire were selected. At each site, a central point was located in an area of visually homogeneous vegetation. Five parallel transects, each 50 m long, were laid out as follows: 1) the first transect started at the central point and followed a randomly-selected compass direction, 2) two additional transects were established parallel to the first, but at a random distance from the central transect up to 25 m distant. Vegetation was sampled in a 2-m wide belt centered on each transect, and soil samples were made at intervals along the transect line. Vegetation measurements included: a) basal diameters of all pre-fire trees greater than 1.3 m in height, b) counts of all post-fire tree seedlings, and c) basal diameters of tree seedlings and willows, measured in a randomly chosen 5x2 m portion of each transect. General notes were made on visual percent cover of different vegetation growth forms at the site. Destructive measurements of tree seedlings and willows made in 2001 were used to develop allometric equations to predict dry biomass from basal diameter. Measurements of soil organic layer depth were made at 5 m intervals with the use of a spade to excavate small chunks of sod. At one randomly-selected sample point per transect, a 10x10 cm sample of the organic layer was collected for bulk density measurements. This dataset contains invasive plant and stand level data for study sites along the Dalton and Parks highways in interior Alaska in the summer of 2012. Study sites were situated in burned and mature black spruce forests to compare invasive plant colonization patterns. Invasive plant density estimates along the road adjacent to each site are included, as well as invasive plant density within study sites. Other data includes ground cover estimates for dominant ground cover types, estimates of seedling abundance for dominant tree species, soil paramters (mineral soil pH and mineral soil moisture, residual organic layer/ organic layer depths, and active layer depths).

Probing the mechanisms by which sub-canopy evergreen shrubs inhibit tree seedling recruitment at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory from 1999 to 2003

Two hundred 2x2 meter plots along transects and traversing 3 understory conditions; rhododendron, kalmia, open. Light conditions will be assessed for each plot and the extreme 50% will be used for experimentation. All plots will be planted to a combination of northern red oak, chestnut oak, red maple, and pitch pine. Inoculated (with mychorrizae) and non-inoculated seedlings will be planted in the plots. Relationships between performance and mychorrizal infection will be determined.

Tree seedling germination, precipitation index, and SWE data for subalpine forest, 1940-2010

Annual germination dates for over 450 Engelmann spruce and over 500 subalpine fir seedlings collected across a complex topographic-moisture gradient were compared to climate variability in the Colorado Front Range. This dataset contains the SPEI (standardized-evaporation precipitation index) and snow-water equivalent (SWE) data from 1940 to 2010 used in the study as well as the number of seedlings establishing each year from 1940 to 2010 by species.
