Bicycle Tyre Data - Lateral Characteristics

Measurement of lateral characteristics of bicycle tyres performed through indoor test-rig VeTyT (Department of Mechanical Engineering, Politecnico di Milano, Milan IT). The test-rig for bicycle tyres complies with the standard ISO 9001-2015.

Specifically, we measured lateral force and self-aligning torque varying vertical load, inflation pressure, camber angles, for a batch of bicycle tyres.

Authors’ disclaimer

The data produced in this paper are not -and cannot be- related in any way on the quality of the products that have been tested. Actually, only one single tyre per type has been tested and the data have been acquired in a laboratory, which is not the real environment. Relevant factors defining the quality of tyres are not -and cannot be- addressed in this paper.

HIGH Pula-ajan rengas - Emergency tyre

Toinen maailmasota haittasi ulkomaankauppaa. Tämä rengas on esimerkki kauppasuhteiden katkeamisen vaikutuksista tieliikenteeseen. Autojen tuonti katkesi ja liikennöinnistä tehtiin luvanvaraista polttoaineen säästämiseksi. Bensiinin sijasta polttoaineena käytettiin puukaasua. Autoja nopeammin loppuun kuluivat varaosat ja varsinkin renkaat. Pula jatkui vielä pitkään sodan jälkeen. Rengas on valmistettu pulttaamalla kahden rikkoutuneen renkaan ehjät osat toisiinsa. WW2 made foreign trade difficult. This tyre is an example of how cutting of trade affected road traffic. Import of cars ended and civilian traffic was regulated to save fuel. Instead of gasoline, wood gas was used as substitute. Spare parts and tyres were worn out before the cars, and shortage lasted long after the war. This tyre was made by fastening the good parts of two tyres together with iron bolts. The object: Mobilia, Finland (member of Traffic Museums Association). 3D model: Mobilia, Finland and Jorma Kontio. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Tyre defect data set

Data descriptor information

1.Data source

This tyre defect X-ray dataset comes from the open dataset of Shanghai University Network Control Centre. The original link to the dataset is below: https://aistudio.baidu.com/datasetdetail/215731

2. Data content and structure

There are 1142 training set images, 382 validation set images and 381 test set images in this dataset. The resolution of each image is 480x480 pixels. The data is stored in JPG format.

3. Data labelling and tagging

Each image contains an annotation file in TXT format, which records the location and type of defects, including four types of defects: "open", "cord_defects", "impurity", and "belt_cuobian".

4. Description of data use

The dataset is mainly used for the study of tyre defect detection, especially for defects containing elongated features. Due to the characteristics of the dataset, it may not be suitable for other types of image detection tasks.

Magic Formula Parameters - Bicycle Tyres

Magic Formula Optimal Parameters have been derived from experimental data measured for different bicycle tyres, under different working conditions (inflation pressure, vertical load, camber angle).
We obtained 14 optimal parameters for lateral force and 18 parameters for self-aligning torque. They can be used for Pacejka Magic Formula '89, which scripts are made available at https://github.com/mechmotum/Magic-Formula-89

Tyre - Soil Interaction

What is Tyre soil Interaction & why this study is important for designing tyre?

Agriculture & OTR tyres should satisfy many different requirements, such as

To provide good traction performance,

(Traction, or tractive force, is the force used to generate motion between a body and a tangential surface. If we consider the body as our tyre and the tangential surface is similar like road. In that case the reaction force of the road or may be soft soil will play a good role in traction performance.

To limit soil shrinkage and compaction, and

To guarantee good comfort level, avoiding high vibrations transmission to the driver seat.

The achievement of all these requirements is strongly dependent on tread design, and of course also on soil properties. Some consideration is there,

As shown in the slide the first one is inflated but the load not applicable that’s why no deformation is shown in the soil area which one is marked as soft soil in the figure where as in the second figure vice versa, Means the tyre is rolling and load is applied that’s because the clear deformation is shown.

In general terms we can call this one is the fluid structure interaction or FSI problem where water as a liquid with tyre which we can consider a structure .

All the simulations has been done through commercial software Abaqus and hypermesh .

Hypermesh is used for pre-processing and Abaqus has been used as a solver and post processing purpose. We have used YEOH material model for hyper elastic behaviour. Because of water we considered the viscoelastic properties as well.

Visualization of material instances is based on output variable EVF, the Eulerian material volume fraction. Output variable EVF_SOIL 1 measures the amount of SOIL instance within an element as a relative fraction. An EVF_SOIL 1 value of one (1) indicates that the element is completely filled with the specified material instance; an EVF_SOIL 1 value of zero (0) indicates that the element is completely devoid of the specified material instance.

As you can see the picture and the value of EVF_SOIL-1 is varying from 1.0 to 0.0 , so the entire red portion you can see the soil or Eulerian material as discussed in earlier slide and in spite of red colour the tyre interaction part with soil.

1. The entire red portion you can see the soil or Eulerian material as discussed in earlier slide.

2. The tyre tread imprint is showing in the picture how soil is pressurised by the tyre.

SVAVG,Mises: The Stress components, computed as a volume fraction weighted average of all materials in the element of the whole model

Status of element (material failure with progressive damage, shear failure model, tensile failure model, porous failure criteria, brittle failure criteria model and VUMAT) .The STATUS of the model is 1.0 if the element is active ,0.0 if the element is not active.

As you have seen the STATUS shows 1.0 in this model , the element is active . This one is an unique parameter of TYRE – SOIL interaction.
