Dataset on full ultrasonic guided wavefield measurements of a CFRP plate with fully bonded and partially debonded omega stringer

The fourth dataset dedicated to the Open Guided Waves platform presented in this work aims at a carbon fiber composite plate with an additional omega stringer at constant temperature conditions. The dataset provides full ultrasonic guided wavefields.

A chirp signal in the frequency range 20-500 kHz and Hann windowed tone-burst signal with 5 cycles and carrier frequencies of 16.5 kHz, 50 kHz, 100 kHz, 200 kHz and 300kHz are used to excite the wave. The piezoceramic actuator used for this purpose is attached to the center of the stringer side surface of the core plate.

Three scenarios are provided with this setup: (1) wavefield measurements without damage, (2) wavefield measurements with a local stringer debond and (3) wavefield measurements with a large stringer debond. The defects were caused by impacts performed from the backside of the plate. As result, the stringer feet debonds locally which was verified with conventional ultrasound measurements.

The dataset can be used for benchmarking purposes of various signal processing methods for damage imaging.

The detailed description of the dataset is published in Data in Brief Journal [3].

Code & Data from: Development of a low cost open-source ultrasonic device for plant height measurements

We here provide code and data for the study "Development of a low cost open-source ultrasonic device for plant height measurements"

Code:
- Arduino code (management of the electronic circuit): "Arduino_ultrasonic_sensor.ino"
- OpenSCAD code (3D-printing): "3DShells_ultrasonic_sensor.scad"
- R code (statistical analysis of field test): "Statistical_analysis.R"

Data:
- "manual_vs_sensor_controlled.csv": this file contains the comparison between the ultrasonic device and the ruler in standardized laboratory conditions. It has three columns: "manual_value", the height value measured manually; "sensor_value", the height value obtained from the ultrasonic device; "height_range", the interval to which the height value belongs (we worked with 25 cm intervals).
- "manual_vs_ruler_field.csv": this file contains the comparison between the ultrasonic device and the ruler in field conditions. Plant height measurements were performed on 26 sorghum genotypes. The file has four columns: "Genotype", the id of the measured genotype; "rep" the replicate (3 plants were measured for each genotype); "manual_value", the height value measured manually; "sensor_value", the height value obtained from the ultrasonic device. When using the ruler, the operator spent 15 min and 23 s to complete all measurements in the field, and 3 min and 27 s to enter all data manually in a digital file. When using the sensor, the operator spent 10 min and 52 s to complete all measurements in the field, and manual transcription was not needed since all measurements are instantaneously saved on an SD card.

More details on the experimental data can be found in the article "Development of a low cost open-source ultrasonic device for plant height measurements".

We also provide a tutorial to explain how to build the ultrasonic-sensor ("tutorial.docx")

Cow drinking monitoring tests with ultrasonic sensor setup Aug 12th and Sep 20th, 2022

We tested a device that could potentially be developed for use in large scale drinking monitoring of individual animals. Our setup consisted of two plastic cylindrical containers having the inner diameter of 275 millimeters. On top of the other cylinder were placed two ultrasonic sensors that measured the distance to the water level in the container. The containers were connected with a hose (inner diameter 25 millimeters) so that the water level on both containers was always the same. Faucets shown on the image were completely open during the experiments that took place on August 12th and September 20th, 2022. Cows were able to freely access and drink from the second container which had the height of 100 centimeters in the first experiment and reduced height of 80 centimeters in the second experiment.

Two ultrasonic sensors were used and they were JSN-SR04T-2.0 ja Maxbotix MB7389. Sensors were connected to circuit board V2 ESP8266 Development Board (CH341) from which measurements were collected to a PC programmatically at about 0.3 second intervals. Both sensors had the resolution of 1 millimeter which corresponds to 0.6 liters in the used containers.

Image of the setup and its installation during the experiment are shown in the photographs. There was a small leakage in the container as is seen in the data (slow and constant decrease of water level). In the first experiment, the leakage was compensated by continuous flow of water after 17:30. On other times the containers were filled manually.

Videos are taken with no particular plan but, instead, when something interesting was seen. Timestamp in the filename refers to the starting time of the video in format YYYYMMDD_HHMMSSsss.

All times refer to Finnish time UTC+3.

Data and videas are shared with the following license: Creative Commons ByAttribution (CC-BY).
