Physical and biogeochemical oceanography data from underway measurements with an AquaLine Ferrybox during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).

Dataset abstract

This data set contains measurements from various sensors installed on the Aqualine Ferrybox system that was connected to the underway seawater supply in the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). Data was collected continuously except for periods when the pump of the underway system was switched off or the system was turned off. Data collection covers all three cruise legs in the period 24th December 2016 to 18th March 2017. Data collected with the CTG MiniPack CTD-F are temperature, salinity, pressure, and turbidity. Data collected by the Aanderaa oxygen optode include dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation. An SBE 18 sensor measured pH. The CTG UniLux fluorometer measured chlorophyll-a concentration. All data has been quality controlled and post-cruise calibrated. Data is provided at 1-minute intervals along the cruise track. In addition, we provide satellite data (sea-surface temperature, sea-surface height, geostrophic velocity, sea-ice concentration) that was interpolated to the cruise-track and an estimate of frontal positions to supplement this underway data set where data was missing or for additional information. This circumpolar data set provides insights into the circumpolar surface ocean conditions and biogeochemistry of the Southern Ocean during one austral summer season.

Note on version 1.0: The first version of this data set only contains temperature, salinity, pressure, and potential density in the post-processed file, since post-processing and quality control for turbidity, chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, oxygen saturation, and pH have not been finalized. These variables will be added to the post-processed data file in a future release.

Dataset license

This dataset of physical and biogeochemical oceanography underway measurements from ACE is made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) whose full text can be found at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Abundance, biovolume, and biomass of Synechococcus and eukaryote pico- and nano- plankton from continuous underway flow cytometry during NES-LTER Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018

These data represent the abundance, biovolume, and biomass of prokaryotic and eukaryotic picoplankton and nanoplankton sampled continuously underway during Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018. Samples were obtained with an Attune NxT Flow Cytometer sampling at approximately 2-min intervals from the underway science seawater. Cells were identified and enumerated from the flow cytometry data files based on their scattering, phycoerythrin (575 nm) and chlorophyll (680 nm) fluorescence signals.

Measurements of benzene and toluene in underway surface seawater and ambient air in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean on cruise ANDREXII/JR18005 between February and April 2019.

Benzene and toluene cycling iin the unpolluted marine environment s poorly understood. Due to a paucity of measurements, the role of the ocean in the atmospheric budgets of atmospheric benzene and toluene is unknown. In order to quantify the air-sea fluxes of these gases and obtain insights to their biogeochemical cycling, we measured their seawater concentrations (surface and depth profiles) and air mixing ratios in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, along a ~11000 km long transect at approximately 60o S in Feb-Apr 2019. The measurements were made using a Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometer coupled to a Segmented Flow Coil Equilibrator. Concentrations, oceanic saturations and calculated fluxes benzene and toluene are presented here.

The data is further presented and discussed in a manuscript:

Marine biogenic benzene and toluene emissions and their impact on secondary organic aerosol in the polar regions. Charel Wohl, Qinyi Li, Carlos A. Interruptions in the measurements are due to calibrations and other instrument maintenance.Interruptions in the calculated flux are due to missing auxiliary data at those sampling points e.g. no wind speed or underway auxiliary data.

Fluxes and saturations computed using the interpolated air mixing ratio (see linked manuscript) are indicated with the suffix "_2"

Negative values correspond to readings below the blank and detection limit.
They are effectively zero and are included here as the computed negative concentration to avoid skewing the mean.

Data last modified 06.05.2022. Underway discrete chlorophyll and post-calibrated underway fluorometer data during NES-LTER Transect cruises, ongoing since 2019

The continuous underway fluorescence, induced by in vivo chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), of surface waters of the Northeast U.S. shelf is compared to discrete Chl-a samples for post-calibration, collected ship-board as part of the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES LTER). Chl-a values derived from the manufacturer-calibrated sensors (hereafter, “continuous fluorescence”) and collected continuously are often different from the precise Chl-a concentrations obtained from discrete, extracted samples. Moreover, underway fluorometers and manufacturer calibrations differ per cruise. Thus, post-calibration of the continuous fluorescence signals using discrete Chl-a measurements is essential to standardize and compare the high-resolution underway Chl-a data along cruise tracks. For six cruises aboard the R/V Endeavor between summer 2019 and summer 2021, 12 to 22 discrete samples were collected from the underway system to measure Chl-a concentrations. These discrete Chl-a concentrations were then compared, using simple linear regressions (Model I least square fit), to corresponding continuous fluorescence values recorded by the two independent fluorometers installed with the underway system. For each cruise a preferred fluorometer was identified based on the best fit of the linear regression between discrete Chl-a concentrations and continuous fluorescence values. The slope and the intercept of the linear regression were used to post-calibrate continuous fluorescence values into standardized and intercomparable Chl-a concentration. This data package includes a table for the underway discrete Chl-a values and a table for the 1-min post-calibrated continuous fluorescence values for the preferred underway fluorometer per cruise.
