Aquatic Insect Adult Metals Dataset: Urban and Forested Watersheds in the Piedmont of NC - 2021-2022

This dataset reports concentrations of 6 target trace metals (copper, zinc, nickel, lead, chromium, and selenium) in unfiltered water, emergent aquatic adult insects (by family), biofilm mats (predominately algae), and tree roots submerged under stream water. Biological and water samples were collected from three streams in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, USA: a wastewater dominated site (Ellerbe Creek, near the USGS gage at Glen Road ), a stormwater dominated site (Ellerbe Creek, near the USGS gage on Club Blvd), and a stream draining a predominately forested watershed (New Hope Creek, near a StreamPULSE site at Hollow Rock Preserve). This data was submitted for publication in a manuscript that explores how metals are transported by aquatic emergent insects from stream ecosystems into terrestrial food webs.

Heat knock-down times of urban and rural Chiasmia clathrata moth larvae and adults

<p>Urbanization and its urban‐heat‐island effect (UHI) have expanding footprints worldwide. The UHI means that urban habitats experience a higher mean and more frequent extreme high temperatures than rural habitats, impacting the ontogeny and resilience of urban biodiversity. However, many organisms occupy different microhabitats during different life stages and thus may experience the UHI differently across their development. While evolutionary changes in heat tolerance in line with the UHI have been demonstrated, it is unknown whether such evolutionary responses can vary across development. Here, using common‐garden‐reared <em>Chiasmia clathrata</em> moths from urban and rural populations from three European countries, we tested for urban evolution of heat shock tolerance in two life stages: larvae and adults. Our results indicate widespread urban evolution of increased heat tolerance in the adult stage only, suggesting that the UHI may be a stronger selective agent in adults. We also found that the difference in heat tolerance between urban and rural populations was similar to the difference between Mid‐ and North‐European regions, suggesting similarity between adaptation to the UHI and natural, latitudinal temperature variation. Our observations incentivize further research to quantify the impact of these UHI adaptations on fitness during urbanization and climate change, and to check whether life‐stage‐specific adaptations in heat tolerance are typical of other ectothermic species that manage to survive in urbanized settings.</p>

<p>Dataset related to the manuscript&nbsp;<em>Older adults&rsquo; suggestions of research topics on ageing well in urban environments &ndash; a participatory study</em>.</p> <p>For this study, a&nbsp;total of 1000 participants aged 65 years or older from five different neighborhoods of Berlin were randomly chosen and were sent a single item questionnaire allowing them to freely propose research topics regarding ageing well in the city. This dataset contains the valid answers we received by participants. Only information that potentially allowed identification of the participants (name, addresses, exact location descriptions) were redacted.</p>

Community attachment as a factor in the subjective well-being of older adults in urban and rural areas: A case study in Tokyo, Osaka, and Shikoku region in Japan

<p>This study explored the relationship between community participation/community attachment and subjective well-being (SWB) among Japanese older adults. The study was conducted in Japanese urban (Tokyo and Osaka) and rural (Shikoku region) areas. Structural equation modelling was performed to assess the potential relationship between community participation, community attachment and SWB. Results showed that community participation and community attachment were positively associated in both areas. However, community attachment had a significant impact on SWB only in rural areas with little impact on increasing SWB in urban areas. We conclude that the role of community attachment varies according to regions with different socioeconomic properties. These findings contribute to the design of detailed region-specific initiatives to improve SWB of older adults.</p>

Dietary intake among urban adults with diabetes: COPEN (Colombian Nutritional Profiles), a cross-sectional study

<p><strong>Objectives: </strong>The prevalence of diabetes is increasing rapidly in developing countries. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of diabetes and to describe its main correlates and associated dietary intake in urban adults from Colombia.</p> <p><strong>Setting: </strong>The Colombian Study of Nutritional Profiles (COPEN) was a population-based, cross-sectional, multi-stage probabilistic sampling survey designed to represent the five main Colombian cities.</p> <p><strong>Participants:</strong> Between June and November 2018, we studied 736 non-pregnant participants aged 18 or older. Diabetes was defined as a random plasma glucose ˃= 200 mg/dL, self-reported prior diagnosis of diabetes or use of any oral or injectable antidiabetic agent(s). Participants also fulfilled a detailed 157-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ).</p> <p><strong>Primary and secondary outcome measures:</strong> Prevalence of diabetes, dietary intake of key nutrients, achievement of dietary goals among individuals with diabetes.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>The overall estimated prevalence of diabetes was 10.1%, with no difference by sex (9.6% in women, 10.8% in men, p=0.43). Socioeconomic level (SEL) correlated positively with diabetes prevalence, the absolute difference in prevalence for the highest vs lowest SEL was 5.6%. The association between diabetes and education level depended on sex, diabetes was more prevalent among more educated men and less educated women. Abdominal obesity was associated with a 65% increase in diabetes prevalence among men, and a 163% increase in women. The proportion of non-achievement of dietary intake goals among participants with diabetes was 94.4% for saturated fats, 86.7% for sodium, 84.4% for fiber and 80% for trans fats. In multivariate logistical regression models, age was the strongest independent correlate of diabetes.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Self-reported diabetes was highly prevalent among Colombian adults, much more than described in most official reports. There were large differences by abdominal obesity status, region of residence, SEL and educational level. The proportion of individuals with diabetes meeting dietary recommendations was alarmingly low.</p>

Data from: Complete blood count reference intervals from a healthy adult urban population in Kenya

Background: There are racial, ethnic and geographical differences in complete blood count (CBC) reference intervals (RIs) and therefore it is necessary to establish RIs that are population specific. Several studies have been carried out in Africa to derive CBC RIs but many were not conducted with the rigor recommended for RI studies hence limiting the adoption and generalizability of the results. Method: By use of a Beckman Coulter ACT 5 DIFF CP analyser, we measured CBC parameters in samples collected from 528 healthy black African volunteers in a largely urban population. The latent abnormal values exclusion (LAVE) method was used for secondary exclusion of individuals who may have had sub-clinical diseases. The RIs were derived by both parametric and non-parametric methods with and without LAVE for comparative purposes. Results: Haemoglobin (Hb) levels were lower while platelet counts were higher in females across the 4 age stratifications. The lower limits for Hb and red blood cell parameters significantly increased after applying the LAVE method which eliminated individuals with latent anemia and inflammation. We adopted RIs by parametric method because 90% confidence intervals of the RI limits were invariably narrower than those by the non-parametric method. The male and female RIs for Hb after applying the LAVE method were 14.5−18.7 g/dL and 12.0−16.5 g/dL respectively while the platelet count RIs were 133−356 and 152−443 x103 per µL respectively. Conclusion: Consistent with other studies from Sub-Saharan Africa, Hb and neutrophil counts were lower than Caucasian values. Our finding of higher Hb and lower eosinophil counts compared to other studies conducted in rural Kenya most likely reflects the strict recruitment criteria and healthier reference population after secondary exclusion of individuals with possible sub-clinical diseases.

Association Between Air Pollution Exposure and Respiratory Function Decline in Urban Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study

<p>In our cross-sectional study examining the association between air pollution exposure and respiratory function decline in urban adults, we found compelling evidence of a significant relationship. Over a span of six months, we assessed respiratory function using spirometry measurements among 500 participants living in densely populated urban areas with varying levels of air pollution. Our results indicate a clear correlation between higher levels of particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide exposure and decreased lung function parameters, such as forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC). These findings underscore the critical impact of urban air quality on respiratory health, emphasizing the need for stringent air quality regulations and public health interventions to mitigate the adverse effects of air pollution on urban populations' respiratory well-being.</p>

Data from: Accelerated epigenetic age and cognitive decline among urban-dwelling adults

Objectives. Epigenetic modifications are closely linked with aging, but their relationship with cognition remains equivocal. Given known sex differences in epigenetic aging, we explored sex-specific associations of three DNA methylation-based (DNAm) measures of epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) with baseline and longitudinal change in cognitive performance among middle-aged urban adults. Methods. We used exploratory data from a sub-group of participants in the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span (HANDLS) study with complete DNA samples and whose baseline ages were &gt;50.0y (2004-2009) to estimate three DNAm EAA measures: (A) universal epigenetic age acceleration (AgeAccel); (B) intrinsic epigenetic age acceleration (IEAA) ; and (C) extrinsic epigenetic age acceleration (EEAA). Cognitive performance was measured at baseline visit (2004-2009) and first follow-up (2009-2013) with 11 test scores covering global mental status and specific domains such as learning/memory, attention, visuo-spatial, psychomotor speed, language/verbal and executive function executive. A series of mixed-effects regression models were conducted adjusting for covariates and multiple testing (N=147-156, ~51% men, k=1.7-1.9 observations/participant, mean follow-up time~4.7y). Results. EEAA, a measure of both biological age and immunosenescence, was consistently associated with greater cognitive decline among men on tests of visual memory/visuo-constructive ability (Benton Visual Retention Test: γ11=0.0512±0.0176, p=0.004) and attention/processing speed (Trail making test, part A: γ11=0.219±0.080, p=0.007). AgeAccel and IEAA were not associated with cognitive change in this sample. Conclusions. EEAA capturing immune system cell aging was associated with faster decline among men in domains of attention and visual memory. Larger longitudinal studies are needed to replicate our findings.
