URBANWASTE - Dataset 1 URBAN_METABOLISM_DATA

<p><strong>General description</strong></p> <p>Within URBANWASTE Work Package 2 data from the pilot cases needed to perform the metabolic analysis was collected. In this sense, mainly data regarding <strong>waste generation and management, tourism (accommodation capacity, tourist flows, tourism economy) and socio-economic data</strong> of each pilot was collected.</p> <p>The indicator sets finally collected were previously cross-checked with the 11 URBANWASTE Pilot Cases regarding data availability on pilot case scale to ensure their suitability and practicability to answer specific URBANWASTE questions. This cross-checking was done by the means of performing a “Survey on data availability” within Task 2.3.</p> <p><strong>Origin, Nature and scale of data</strong></p> <p>For data collection, all pilot cases partners received an empty excel database divided into three thematic areas (waste related data, socio-economic data and tourism related data). In case the pilot case partners did not have access to the requested information, other organisations such as local municipal departments, waste management companies, tourism associations, national statistical agencies etc. were contacted by them for support in data provision.</p> <p>The data collected with these databases mainly represent statistical data. For transparency reasons, data sources were to be specified as well.</p> <p>The spatial scale of the collected data was supposed to be the pilot case area (meaning for the whole city, municipality or metropolitan area). As data on this small scale was not available for all data sets, some of the provided data is on regional or even national level. For ensuring transparency, the spatial scale had to be specified for each data set. According to the type of indicators, the temporal scale varies from annual data to monthly data.</p> <p>For selected data sets, time series data at annual scale were collected for the period 2000 – 2015. Data sources had to be specified as well. When needed, the definitions of these indicators were added directly in the database template.</p> <p>In total, 48 data sets (some of them further divided into sub-sets) were collected. Metabolic and behavioral adaptations of greater white-toothed shrews to urban conditions

<p class="MsoNoSpacing">The global trend of urbanization is creating novel challenges to many animal species. Studies investigating behavioral differences between rural and urban populations often report a general increase in risk-taking behaviors in urban populations. According to the most common energy management model (the performance model), behaviors that increase access to resources, such as aggression and boldness, and behaviors that consume net energy, like locomotion and stress responses, are both positively correlated to resting metabolic rate (RMR). Thus, we expect urban populations to not only exhibit a higher level of risk-taking behavior but also a higher RMR. However, these interactions remain poorly investigated. Our main goal was to analyze the relationship between RMR and risk-taking behaviors in the greater white-toothed shrew (<i>Crocidura russula</i>) in rural vs. urban populations. Trapped shrews were brought to captivity where we measured RMR, boldness and exploration rate three times in each individual. Our findings revealed urban shrews were indeed bolder and more exploratory, but contrary to our expectations, their RMR was lower than that of rural shrews. This is likely explained by differences in the environmental conditions of these two habitats, such as higher ambient temperatures and/or lower prey availability in cities. When looking at each population separately, this relationship remained similar: urban shrews with a higher RMR were less bold, and rural shrews with a higher RMR showed a lower exploration rate. We conclude the energetic strategy of <i>C. russula</i> is dependent on the environmental and observational context and cannot be explained by the performance model.</p>

Urban / rural acorn ant metabolic rate and running speed

<p>Metabolic rates of ectotherms are expected to increase with global trends of climatic warming. But the potential for rapid, compensatory evolution of lower metabolic rate in response to rising temperatures is only starting to be explored. Here, we explored rapid evolution of metabolic rate and locomotor performance in acorn-dwelling ants (<i>Temnothorax curvispinosus</i>) in response to urban heat island effects. We reared ant colonies within a laboratory common garden (25 °C) to generate a lab-born cohort of workers and tested their acute plastic responses to temperature. Contrary to expectations, urban ants exhibited a higher metabolic rate compared with rural ants when tested at 25 °C, suggesting a potentially maladaptive evolutionary response to urbanization. Urban and rural ants had similar metabolic rates when tested at 38 °C, as a consequence of a diminished plastic response of the urban ants. Locomotor performance also evolved such that the running speed of urban ants was faster than rural ants under warmer test temperatures (32 and 42 °C) but slower under a cooler test temperature (22 °C). The resulting specialist-generalist tradeoff and higher thermal optimum for locomotor performance might compensate for evolved increases in metabolic rate by allowing workers to more quickly scout and retrieve resources.</p>
