Vent-Proximal Deposits South of Ascraeus Mons, Mars

The data repository contains the mapping shapefiles of geological units, data pertaining to the thickness measurements of the vent-proximal deposits, and Excel sheets that allow to reproduction of the spatter rampart deposits investigation south of Ascraeus Mons, Mars. The mapping and thickness measurements were conducted based on the CTX stereo-pair images P02_001774_1848, centered at 4.86°N, 254.60°E, and B01_009949_1844, centered at 4.46°N, 254.62°E, from which the digital elevation model was produced using MarsSI system (Mars System of Information) designed by Quantin-Nataf et al. (2018). To calculate vertical errors on elevations, we used an additional CTX-based DEM (B01_009949_1844 centered at 4.46°N, 254.62°E, and F02_036427_1847, centered at 4.80°N, 254.61°E).

Monogenetic vents in northern Main Ethiopian Rift

This data set contains three files, they are tab-delimited text files.

The files have three columns, from the left:: x: UTM-WGS84 coordinate of the center of the vent in meters, y: UTM-WGS84 coordinate of the center of the vent in meters, s: the nearest neighbor distance for each vent, in meters.

They were acquired by analyzing shaded relief 30 m images from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) DEM (http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/) with a vertical exaggeration (3x) and by analyzing panchromatic SPOT satellite images (http://www. spotimage.com) with a pixel resolution from 2.5 to 20 m and using Google Earth software (http://earth .google.com/).

Lovebirds perch in building vents to cool down during hot times of year, a study of rosy-cheeked lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis) in the Phoenix, Arizona, USA metropolitan area (2018-2019)

Extreme heat can place significant environmental and physiological pressures on animals. One means of tolerating extreme thermal conditions is to seek cool microclimates. Few empirical studies have documented use by wild animals of human-provided cool microsites as means of thermoregulating. Here we show that rosy-cheeked lovebirds in Phoenix, Arizona – the hottest city in North America – use relief air vents on the face of a building (which direct cool air outdoors when internal air-conditioning systems are on) as perching sites, and only during extremely hot times of day and year (> 45 C). Though this highlights a wasteful anthropogenic energy system (the product of an old building with outdated temperature-control technology), our results reveal how an introduced bird species (from Africa) can tolerate extreme thermal conditions in the novel environment.
