Data from: Ethanol abolishes vigilance-dependent astroglia network activation in mice by inhibiting norepinephrine release
<p>This collection of data sets was obtained during a study of the effect of acute ethanol intoxication on vigilance-dependent astroglia network activation in mice. The main findings have been that ethanol inhibits astroglia activation by inhibiting vigilance-dependent norepinephrine release. This leads to a failure of activation of alpha<sub>1A</sub>-adrenergic receptors on astroglia. Further, this study has revealed that ethanol inhibition of cerebellar Bergmann glia Ca<sup>2+</sup> activation does not account for ataxic motor behavior, but may rather contribute to cognitive deficits.</p>
Natural and anthropogenic noise increase vigilance and decrease foraging behaviors in song sparrows
<p>Animals glean information about risk from their habitat. The acoustic environment is one such source of information, and is an important, yet understudied ecological axis. Although anthropogenic noise has become recently ubiquitous, risk mitigation behaviors have likely been shaped by natural noise over millennia. Listening animals have been shown to increase vigilance and decrease foraging in both natural and anthropogenic noise. However, direct comparisons could be informative to conservation and understanding evolutionary drivers of behavior in noise. Here, we used 27 song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) and 148 laboratory behavioral trials to assess foraging and vigilance behavior in both anthropogenic and natural noise sources. Using 5 acoustic environments (playbacks of roadway traffic, a white-water river, a white-water river shifted upwards in frequency, a river with the amplitude modulation of roadway traffic, and an ambient control), we attempt to parse out the acoustic characteristics that make a foraging habitat risky. We found that sparrows increased vigilance or decreased foraging in 4 of 6 behaviors when foraging in higher sound levels regardless of the noise source or variation in frequency and amplitude modulation. These responses may help explain previously-reported declines in abundance of song sparrows exposed to playback of intense river noise. Our results imply that natural soundscapes have likely shaped behavior long before anthropogenic noise, and that high sound levels negatively affect the foraging-vigilance trade-off in most intense acoustic environments. Given the ever-increasing footprint of noise pollution, these results imply potential negative consequences for bird populations. </p>

Data and list of commands required to run the Mefite d'Ansanto gas dispersion case with VIGIL v1.3.7
<p>This dataset include input file to run a probabilistic hazard assessment of CO2 dispersion in the Mefite d'Ansanto area, Southern Italy. </p> <p>Alongside the input file, pre-retrieved meteorological data for the 1000 simulations run in this study are available in the folder "simulations". These can be used to reproduce the results presented in the manuscript [EDIT] by means of the VIGIL commands listed in the file "commands.txt". In this case, after the simulations.tar.gz is decompressed into the folder "simulations", the user can avoid running weather.py (see the first command in commands.txt) and should not modify nor cancel the file days_list.txt. A completely new run is instead performed if all the VIGIL scripts are executed. </p> <p>The archive "selected_outputs.tar" contains all the statistical outputs (ECDF and persistence) of the Mefite hazard study in .grd format and the related plots as produced by VIGIL. Part of these outputs have been used to produce the figures of the manuscript. </p>
Measuring the benefit of a risk-induced trait response: vigilance and survival probability
<p>Defensive traits are hypothesized to benefit prey by reducing predation risk from a focal predator but come at a cost to the fitness of the prey. Variation in the expression of defensive traits is seen among individuals within the same population, and in the same individual in response to changes in the environment (i.e., phenotypically plastic responses). It is the relative magnitude of the cost and benefit of the defensive trait which underlies the defensive trait expression and its consequences to the community. However, whereas the cost has received much attention in ecological research, the benefit is seldom examined. Even in a defensive trait as extensively studied as vigilance, there are few studies of the purported benefit of the behavior, namely that vigilance enhances survival. We examined if prey vigilance increased survival and quantified that benefit in a natural system, with white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) experiencing unmanipulated levels of predation risk from Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi). Deer that spent more time vigilant (as measured by head position using camera trap data) had a higher probability of survival. Indeed, an individual deer that were vigilant 75% of the time were more than three times as likely to be killed by panthers over the course of a year compared to a deer that were vigilant 95% of the time. Our results therefore show that within-population variation in the expression of a defensive trait has profound consequences to the benefit it confers. Our results provide empirical evidence supporting a long-held but seldom tested hypothesis, that vigilance is a behavior that reduces the probability of predation and quantified the benefit of this defensive trait. Our work furthers an understanding of the net effects of a trait on prey fitness and predator-prey interactions, within-population variation in traits, and predation risk effects.</p>

Data from: Housework or vigilance? Bilbies alter burrowing activity under threat of predation by feral cats
<p>Behavioral adjustments to predation risk not only impose costs on prey species themselves but can also have cascading impacts on whole ecosystems. The greater bilby (<em>Macrotis lagotis</em>) is an important ecosystem engineer, modifying the physical environment through their digging activity, and supporting a diverse range of sympatric species that use its burrows for refuge and food resources. The bilby has experienced severe decline over the last 200 years, and the species is now restricted to approximately 20% of its former distribution. Introduced predators, such as the feral cat (<em>Felis catus</em>), have contributed to this decline. We used camera traps to monitor bilby burrows at four sites in Western Australia, where bilbies were exposed to varying levels of cat predation threat. We investigated the impact of feral cats on bilby behavior at burrows, particularly during highly vulnerable periods when they dig and clear away soil or debris from the burrow entrance as they perform burrow maintenance. There was little evidence that bilbies avoided burrows that were visited by a feral cat; however, bilbies reduced the time spent performing burrow maintenance in the days following a cat visit (p=0.010). We found the risk posed to bilbies varied over time, with twice the cat activity around full moon compared with dark nights. Bilby burrows are such valuable resources for ecosystem functioning that bilby predation by feral cats, as well as even indirect impacts on bilby behavioral responses to perceived predation risk, together may have a substantial ecosystem impact.</p>
