Dataset for the study Late development of audio-visual integration in the vertical plane

It is not clear how multisensory skills develop and how visual experience impacts on multisensory spatial development. Conflicting results show that visual calibration precedes multisensory integration for the audio-visual spatial bisection task (Gori et al., 2012a, 2012b) while in other tasks such as spatial localization, visual calibration occurs after multisensory development (Rohlf et al., 2020). Results in blind individuals can say something about the role of vision on perceptual development. Scientific evidences show that blind individuals have impairments in bisecting the auditory space (Gori et al., 2014) but not in localizing auditory sources (Lessard et al., 1998). Such results suggest that sensory calibration and impairment are linked. We studied the development of audio-visual multisensory localization in the vertical plane in sighted individuals from 5 years to adulthood to address this hypothesis. We hypothesize that typical children would show late audio-visual integration for the vertical plane, preceded by visual dominance. Unimodal and bimodal audio-visual thresholds and PSEs were measured and compared with the Bayesian optimal-integration model (maximum likelihood estimation). Results show that the development of multisensory integration in the vertical plane is not evident at 5 years, suggesting visual dominance for vertical audio-visual localization. These results support the idea that multisensory perception in the vertical domain depends on sensory calibration. We discuss these scientific results proposing that the process of cross-sensory calibration is task-specific and highlighting the importance of linking the impairment and development to better determine how our brain works.

Data are in textual tab delimited format. DATA SUPPORTING RESEARCH ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF PALEONTOLOGY IN BRAZIL (NETWORK VISUALIZATIONS)

The documents made available present the data set that was processed in Lucas George Wendt's dissertation, presented in 2024 in the Postgraduate Program in Information Science (PPGCIN) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). The study is entitled: Brazilian Paleontology: a scientometric analysis based on the Lattes Curriculum. The abstract is as follows. This research sought to carry out a scientometric analysis of Paleontology in Brazil based on data collected in the Lattes Curriculum. The general objective of this dissertation is to analyze the scientific field of Paleontology diachronically and through a scientometric study - which will be explained based on the personal information of the researchers collected in their profiles and the scientific literature produced and registered in the Lattes Curriculum of the Lattes Platform. The literature review presented the concepts of Information Science, the area that, in this study, seeks to understand Paleontology through its research instruments; Scientific Communication, the main subject analyzed in this study; Metric Information Studies, the theoretical-methodological framework used in this research; Scientometrics, the theoretical scope used to understand in greater depth the constitution of the field of national Paleontology. Finally, references were also presented that help in the understanding of Paleontology in its national, South American, North American and European contexts. The research used a mixed approach of qualitative and quantitative elements. The data were generated from the CVs of researchers registered on the Lattes Platform, collected using the Brapci Bibliometric Tools tool and analyzed in specific software for metric analysis. To achieve the research objectives, data from 1,465 researcher profiles were analyzed. Regarding the full articles published in journals, 43,333 articles were considered valid. Regarding the keywords of the articles, 91,922 keywords were analyzed for word clouds and 84,771 for relationship networks. Of the academic orientations, 1,182 profiles generated 51,400 valid orientations. The aspect of the current employment relationship had 1,256 profiles considered. Regarding academic backgrounds, 1,465 profiles generated 4,556 academic backgrounds analyzed. The main contribution of this study is the realization of an unprecedented mapping of the panorama of Paleontology in Brazil, since there are no other studies that establish the same relationships that this research sought to establish. Regarding the results, based on the data collected and analyzed, the general metric indicators linked to the scientific production associated with Brazilian Paleontology were presented based on the information collected in the Lattes Curriculum; the directions of research in Paleontology that currently constitute this field in Brazil were mapped, as well as their thematic associations with other fields of knowledge; the training of PhD researchers who work with Paleontology or who have their production associated with Paleontology in terms of their academic training was characterized; and where the scientific knowledge in Paleontology or associated with Paleontology is produced was identified. The results of this study are relevant to understanding Brazilian Paleontology, highlighting its national orientation in fossil studies, doctoral training in local institutions and predominant activity in national organizations. These elements are important to consolidate Brazilian paleontological science globally. Regarding interdisciplinary relations, a clear proximity between Paleontology and Geosciences is observed, influenced by the history and current dynamics of the field. visualizing the developement of painting production in periods of 50 years from 1300 to 2000 (source: https://kor.uni-frankfurt.de)

Data
* entities representing a painting were selected
** since there is no classification of works of art in the database, a set of values describing the technical and material features of the works of art were used to filter works of art being most probably paintings. The filter values can be found in ../../unique_material_values_new.xlsx on tabs "Öl auf Leinwand" and "Tafelmalerei"
* the selected entities were classified in periods of 50 years starting in 1300 and ending in 2000. Additionally there were two classes for paintings before 1300 and after 2000, and a class for non dated painting entities
* for each of the classes, the proprtion of its cardinal number in respect to the global number of selected entities was calculated
* class labels and the calculated proportion were written in data.csv (column 1: class labels, column 2: proprtion)

Processing
* script that creates a bar chart from data in data.tsv
** the script uses d3.js

Differential activation of c-Fos and Egr1 during development of the mouse visual cortex

Critical periods (CP) in brain development are associated with profound changes in gene expression cascades. Here we examine the expression of the immediate early genes c-Fos and Egr1 at different stages of mouse visual cortex (VC) development. Mice 11, 25, and 50 days of age were maintained under standard light-dark conditions, deprived of light for 5 days, or deprived of light for 5 days and then exposed to light for 90 min. Their brains were analyzed at PND16 (before the onset of the CP), PND30 (during the CP) and PND55 (after the CP) to determine the changes in the number of cells expressing c-Fos and Egr1 in the binocular primary visual and primary somatosensory cortices. We found highly specific induction of c-Fos expression in the primary VC in response to light. We also observed transient cross-modal activation of c-Fos in the barrel field of the primary somatosensory cortex in response to light before and during the CP; such activation disappeared after the CP. Expression of Egr1 was not induced by light in the VC before the CP, but was evident during and after the CP, although the induction was much less pronounced than that of c-Fos. Dynamic changes in c-Fos and Egr1 expression may reflect their contribution to the VC plasticity during the CPs of postnatal brain development.
