Database of pyroclastic cover deposit thickness measurements (PT-Cam) in peri-volcanic areas of Campania (Italy)

In an eruptive event, tephra deposits (i.e. ash and pumice) disperse in the atmosphere and deposit on the ground surface according to the speed and direction of the wind. Because the geotechnical and hydraulic properties of the unconsolidated pyroclastic fall deposits usually differ from the bedrock, their spatial thickness significantly influences geomorphological and hydrogeological processes such as landscape evolution, erosion, landslide, and hillslope hydrogeology.

The PT-Cam database presents the thickness of tephra deposits (i.e. the unconsolidated materials over the bedrock) in Campania region (Italy), measured through in-situ investigations of some territories around the Somma-Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei, Roccamonfina, and Ischia volcanoes during the last decades. The measurements were conducted with probing tests, dynamic penetration tests, trenches, man-made pits, seismic surveys, and outcrops.

Explanation for database attribute:

CODE: identification code of the measurement;

z: measured thickness expressed in cm;

type_z: thickness type (i.e. if investigation has reached to the bedrock the type is “total” otherwise it is “partial”);

type_investigation: method of in-situ investigation;

locality: municipality to which the measurement point belongs;

Longitude, Latitude: km coordinates in UTM WGS 84 system.

Geochronological and geochemical data of volcanic deposits of the Central Main Ethiopian Rift

This database represents a collection of geochronological data, geochemistry of bulk rocks and melt inclusions from a large set of samples collected in the framework of two field surveys (2019, 2020) in the Central Main Ethiopian Rift.

This dataset provides supporting information to the paper:
Franceschini Z., Cioni R., Scaillet S., Prouteau G., Corti G., Sani F., Mondanaro A., Frascerra D., Melaku A.A., Scaillet B., Oppenheimer C., Duval F. (2024) "Pulsatory volcanism in the Main Ethiopian Rift and its environmental consequences", Nature Communications Earth and Environment.

The samples have been prepared for the different analyses at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Florence. The geochronological analyses building up the dataset have been performed at the Argon facility at the Institut des Sciences de la Terre d'Orléans (ISTO), in France. The analythical methods related to the 40Ar/39Ar analyses are described in detail in the above mentioned paper.
The geochemical dataset contains the results of major and trace elements concentrations on whole rock samples (performed at the Service d'Anlayse des Roches et des Mineraux -CNRS - CRPG of Nancy, in France) and major elements and volatile concentrations of melt inclusions belonging to four ignimbrite samples (analysed with an Electron Micro Probe Analyzer housed at the laboratories of the Institut des Sciences de la Terre d'Orléans, in France).

These datasets have been performed in the frame of a PhD fellowship (granted to Zara Franceschini) funded by the Università Italo Francese (Bando Vinci 2018, n. C3-1717) and also partially supported by the Italian Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca (MiUR) through PRIN grant 2017P9AT72.

IDW interpolation dataset of ash and tephra deposition following the 2021 Tajogaite volcanic eruption on La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain

The compiled dataset is the result of a field collection campaign to measure the depth of the ash and tephra layer in the aftermath of the 2021 volcanic eruption (Tajogaite) on the island of La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain.

The dataset consists of two files: a shapefile and a GeoTIFF raster. The shapefile is a point layer file that displays the location of all ash depth measurements (415 points) taken in the field. To improve our sampling near the crater, where safety and time constraints prevented field collection, we manually sampled additional drone-based measurements (66 points). We combined these data into a single dataset ("ash_depth"; 481 total points) that was then used as input for a spatial interpolation using Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW).

The IDW interpolation was performed using the Spatial Analyst toolbox in ArcMap 10.8.1 (Esri, 2021). As an exact deterministic interpolation, IDW estimates pixels values of unknown points by using average distance and a weight between sample points (Watson & Philip, 1985). This is ideal for a dataset that includes many field measurements since IDW interpolates between the minimum and maximum of the collected data. The model parameters were adjusted manually but the best results were yielded using the default settings, with the exception of the output cell size. The output cell size was calibrated to 2 m. The IDW parameters can be viewed in Table 1.

The sample point locations were resampled from the raster file to estimate the Root Square Mean Error (RMSE) and were saved to the shapefile as "ash_idw". The RMSE of the dataset is 0.34 m. For further inquiries please contact Christopher Shatto (email: christopher.shatto@uni-bayreuth.de).

Please cite the data paper link to this repository as:

C. Blacks Mountain Experimental Forest site, station NADP Station CA96, Lassen Volcanic National Park-Manzanita Lake, study of calcium in wet deposition in units of kilogramsPerHectare on a monthly timescale

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Blacks Mountain Experimental Forest (BLA) contains calcium in wet deposition measurements in kilogramsPerHectare units and were aggregated to a monthly timescale.
