Water column chlorophyll concentrations from lagoon, river, and ocean sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2018-ongoing

Multiple water types (river, lagoon, ocean) from the North Slope of Alaska and nearshore Beaufort Sea are sampled seasonally by the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER (BLE LTER) Core Program to investigate biogeochemical linkages between terrestrial, lagoon, and open ocean ecosystems. Water samples from multiple depths are collected during full ice cover (April), ice break-up (mid-June to early July), and open water (late July and August) periods for quantification of chlorophyll-a concentrations. Concentrations are reported in micrograms of chlorophyll per liter of filtered seawater (μg/L).

Physiochemical water column parameters and hydrographic time series from river, lagoon, and open ocean sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2018-ongoing

To understand circulation and seasonality as part of the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystem Long Term Ecological Research program, temperature, conductivity, salinity, pressure, depth, and current velocity are recorded hourly in situ, starting August 2018 in lagoons across the Beaufort Sea coast (Elson Lagoon, Kaktovik Lagoon, and Jago Lagoon). Moorings include combinations of 1) RBR Concerto CTDs with temperature, conductivity, and pressure sensors; 2) StarOddi CTs with temperature and conductivity sensors; and 3) Lowell TCM-1 Tilt Current meters with MAT-1 Data Loggers for velocity and bearing. In addition, during BLE LTER's annual sampling, water column physiochemical parameters (chlorophyll a, dissolved oxygen, phycoerythrin concentration, pH, temperature, conductivity, salinity) are measured by hand with a YSI data sonde at river, lagoon, and open ocean sites along the Beaufort Sea coast. Here we provide both quality controlled in situ mooring data and all YSI sonde data.

Column-Averaged Atmospheric Carbon and Water at Harvard Forest since 2018

Ground-based total-atmospheric column measurements of CO2, CH4, CO, and H2O began at Harvard Forest in May 2018 using a solar-viewing Fourier Transform Spectrometer (Bruker EM27/Sun). Observations are made from a platform near the Fisher Meteorological Tower throughout the year on sunny days. Total column observations are sensitive to regional carbon fluxes, and are less impacted by changes in the boundary layer height than tower based in-situ observations. The Harvard Forest observations are complemented by an identical instrument operated on the Harvard campus in Cambridge MA. The two sensors are used to support studies of urban emissions, regional transport, and forest-atmosphere exchange. In addition, the total-column measurements provide key validation data for satellite measurements of greenhouse gases.

Lake Mendota, Wisconsin, USA, Zebra Mussel Veliger Water Column Density 2016-2019

We sampled veliger (larval stage) zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) from 2016-2019. Zebra mussels are invasive in Lake Mendota and were first detected in November 2015. Samples were taken at three different sites on Lake Mendota from June to August in 2016, and from June to November in 2018-2019, using a 0.5 m diameter, 64 micrometer mesh size plankton net for an 8 m depth tow. This dataset complements adult zebra mussel, zoobenthos, and phytobenthos data collected during the same time period, for which data is also archived with EDI.

Summer water chemistry; sediment phosphorus fluxes and sorption capacity; sedimentation and sediment resuspension dynamics; water column thermal structure; and zooplankton, macroinvertebrate, and macrophyte communities in eight shallow lakes in northwest Iowa, USA (2018-2020)

The primary aim of this data product is to characterize change in water chemistry, sediment-water interactions, and biological communities in shallow, eutrophic lakes undergoing a fishery biomanipulation. We studied eight glacial lakes located in northwest Iowa, USA, from 2018 to 2020 during the summer season (May to September). A subset of these lakes (n = 4; Center, Five Island, North Twin, and Silver Lakes) were part of a fishery biomanipulation in which the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) incentivized commercial harvest of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and bigmouth buffalo (Ictiobus cyprinellus). Harvests occurred in Center and Five Island Lakes during 2018-2019 and in North Twin and Silver Lakes during 2019-2020. Between 73 and 373 kg fish biomass per ha were removed each year. The other study lakes (n = 4; Blue, South Twin, Storm, and Swan Lakes) remained unmanipulated during the study period. Over the course of the biomanipulation, we quantified a suite of physical, chemical, and biological parameters across the study lakes. High frequency aquatic sensors were used to measure water column thermal structure, dissolved oxygen concentrations, and algal pigments. Manual water chemistry sampling further quantified suspended solids, total phosphorus and nitrogen, soluble reactive phosphorus, nitrate, and water clarity. We measured flux rates of phosphorus between bottom sediments and the overlying water using ex situ sediment core incubations under both oxic and anoxic conditions. We further quantified sediment phosphorus sorption capacity using equilibrium phosphorus concentration assays. Tiered sediment traps were used to measure sedimentation rates as well as sediment resuspension in bottom waters. We also measured change in zooplankton, macroinvertebrate, and macrophyte community composition and abundance. Time series of water column pH from lagoon sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2018-ongoing

Beginning in August 2018, the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research (BLE LTER) program will record water column pH time series (hourly) from a benthic mooring containing a Seabird SeaFET V2 buoyed 10 cm from the lagoon seafloor. pH values are logged from the instrument’s internal sensor and reported on the total hydrogen ion scale. Site bottom water is collected and analyzed in the laboratory to employ a single point calibration to the data during post-processing. Another discrete water sample is collected months after instrument deployment to determine uncertainty (2018-2019 season: 0.002).

The inorganic plant macronutrients dissolved phosphate, silicate, nitrate, nitrite and ammonium are the major sources of nutrition for phytoplankton growth in seawater (with sunlight and inorganic carbon). Macronutrient distributions reflect the large-scale circulation patterns in the oceans and are useful properties to delineate water masses. Dissolved inorganic nutrients samples are typically collected in every Niskin bottle sample collected at and near Palmer Station, Anvers Island, Antarctica on the Western Antarctic Peninsula. Water samples are collected throughout the water column at stations within the Palmer LTER region (primarily B and E, to 50m and 65m respectively). Beginning in the 2020-2021 season, Station B is no longer sampled. In Antarctic waters, dissolved inorganic macronutrients are seldom depleted to limiting concentrations except during heavy prolonged phytoplankton blooms. This is due to the fact that phytoplankton growth is more often limited by light or iron, and to the short growing season. Water samples are analyzed for dissolved nutrients with recognized standard oceanographic protocols for nutrient autoanalyzers (continuous flow analyzers).

Merged discrete water-column data from PAL LTER research cruises along the Western Antarctic Peninsula, from 1991 to 2024.

Water samples are collected throughout the water column along the Western Antarctic Peninsula at regular LTER grid stations where CTD casts are preformed and in surface waters at underway stations, where CTD casts are not done, using the ship's flow-through seawater system. This dataset is the compilation of water samples collected at these stations, merged from other PAL-LTER datasets. Data includes water column Chlorophyll and Phaeopigment concentrations; phytoplankton accessory pigments -including other chlorophyll's (e.g. chlorophyll b), xanthophylls, and carotenes; primary production rates; bacterial production; dissolved organic carbon; particulate organic carbon and nitrogen; dissolved inorganic nutrients; dissolved oxygen, and dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity. Measurements of phytoplankton Fv/Fm measured using a FIRe (Fluorescence Induction and Relaxation) fluorometer are also included, though caution is urged as FIRe data has not been corrected nor QCed. Conductivity, temperature, depth, and associated data from instruments on the sampling rosette (e.g. PAR, beam transmission) for each sampling depth are also included. Phytoplankton accessory pigment data is unavailable for the LMG10-01 cruise due to instrumentation problems and for the LMG12-01 cruise due to a freezer failure which resulted in the loss of samples. Dissolved oxygen measurements were discontinues after 2012, and thus no data is available from 2013 onwards. Dissolved Organic Carbon data is unavailable after 2012 due to instrumentation problems. There is no Particulate Organic Carbon data for cruise PD94-01.

CTD casts are preformed and water collected using go-flo bottles or a rosette. Near-surface waters are also sampled occassionally at the Palmer Station seawater intake (pumphouse). This dataset is the compilation of water samples collected at these stations, merged from other PAL-LTER datasets. Data includes water column Chlorophyll and Phaeopigment concentrations; phytoplankton accessory pigments -including other chlorophyll's (e.g. chlorophyll b), xanthophylls, and carotenes; primary production rates; bacterial production; dissolved organic carbon; particulate organic carbon and nitrogen; dissolved inorganic nutrients; dissolved oxygen, and dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity. Measurements of phytoplankton Fv/Fm measured using a FIRe (Fluorescence Induction and Relaxation) fluorometer are also included, though caution is urged as FIRe data has not been corrected nor QCed. Dissolved oxygen measurements and dissolved inorganic carbon/alkalinity measurements are not available for any season. Dissolved Organic Carbon data is unavailable after 2012 due to instrumentation problems. There is no Particulate Organic Carbon after the 2012 season.

PIE LTER water-column nutrient and particulate transects along the Parker River Estuary, Massachusetts, 1994 - 2019.

Water chemistry including nutrient concentrations for various forms of N, P, C, as well as suspended sediments and light extinction coefficients, was determined from bi-annual nutrient transects along the Plum Island Sound estuary from the Parker River Dam to the mouth of the sound. Grab samples were taken at 11 sites along a 24 km transect from the mouth of the estuary to as near the dam at the head of the estuary as poosible. These samples have generally been collected in Spring and Fall and are done in conjunction with metabolism transects measuring dissolved oxygen levels. The Spring and Fall transects correspond to the high-flow, pre-growth season and the low-flow, post-growth season, respectively.

Coupling between Sediment and Water Column Populations of Ammonia Oxidizing Thaumarchaeota in the Duplin River near Sapelo Island, Georgia

Populations of nitrifying organisms in the water column at Marsh Landing display a midsummer peak in the abundance of ammonia oxidizing Archaea (AOA) at the site, coinciding with a peak in nitrite concentration. Marsh Landing is at the mouth of the Duplin River, a dead-end tidal channel that drains an extensive area of salt marsh. While the lower Duplin River at Marsh Landing exchanges tidally with Doboy Sound and thus South Atlantic Bight (SAB) coastal waters, water in its upper reaches has a residence time of weeks. The work reported here had two goals: 1) test the hypothesis that the surrounding salt marsh is the source of nitrifiers seen in water samples taken at Marsh Landing; and 2) compare the seasonal dynamics of nitrifiers in surficial sediments with those in the water column. We sampled 6 stations along the ~20 km length of the Duplin River. We collected surface water samples (~0.20 m) at low- to mid-tide, monthly from April-December 2014. Sediment samples (top 1 cm) were collected at the same time from unvegetated creek bank at 2 locations on the Duplin River and from 4 locations spanning the creek bank-to-upland gradient of the saltmarsh accessible from the Teal Boardwalk. The abundance of ammonia oxidizing Archaea, Marine Group 1 Archaea (Thaumarchaeota), ammonia oxidizing Betaproteobacteria (AOB), Bacteria and Nitrospina, a nitrite oxidizing bacterium, were determined by quantitative PCR (qPCR) of DNA extracted from the samples. This data set contains the abundance estimates from April to December 2014 for sediment and water column samples, with corresponding water quality measurements (temperature, salinity and nitrogenous nutrient concentrations).

Stable isotope (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) measurements of water column and benthic samples from Lake Joyce, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, November 2014

Water column and benthic samples were collected from Lake Joyce, a perennially ice-covered lake in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, to support stable isotope analyses. Water column samples were collected in November 2014 at depths ranging from 6 to 53 m using a Niskin bottle deployed through a borehole in the lake ice. The deepest sample (53 m) was collected with concurrent live-drop camera observations to ensure that sampling did not disrupt the underlying sediments. Benthic water samples were collected by divers along the delta front on the north side of the lake, targeting topographic low points at depths between 10 and 28.2 m to assess potential pooling of hyporheic discharge. These samples were taken within ~5 cm of the sediment-water interface using 60 mL syringes. This data package includes stable water isotope measurements (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) to support investigations of spatial variability in lake water isotopic composition and potential hydrologic inputs.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Water Column microbial community data in lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia

Microbes process a significant fraction of organic material in marine systems, and the composition and activity of their communities are strongly modulated by fluctuations in nutrient availability. To investigate the distribution and dynamics of microbial communities in tropical lagoon ecosystems, bacteria and archaea were quantified from water column samples collected in lagoons around Moorea, French Polynesia during May 2021, April 2022, and April 2023 using eDNA sequencing. Environmental DNA was extracted and sequenced to assess microbial community composition, with data processed using the QIIME 2 platform (version 2023.7). Microbial communities in fringing reef habitats differed from those in mid-lagoon and back reef sites. These differences in microbial communities were related to patterns of water column nutrients and fluorescent dissolved organic matter, providing a baseline for understanding how lagoon microbial communities respond to spatial and temporal variability in reef environments.

Abundance, biovolume, and biomass of Synechococcus, eukaryote pico- and nano- phytoplankton, and heterotrophic bacteria from flow cytometry for water column bottle samples on NES-LTER Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018

These data represent the abundance, biovolume, and biomass of prokaryotic phytoplankton, eukaryotic pico- and nano- phytoplankton, and heterotrophic bacteria from discrete flow cytometry samples collected during the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018. Samples were collected and preserved from the water column at multiple depths using Niskin bottles on a CTD rosette system along the NES-LTER transect, and analyzed post cruise. Cells were identified and enumerated from the flow cytometry data files based on their scattering, SYBR (525 nm), phycoerythrin (575 nm) and chlorophyll (680 nm) fluorescence signals. Gating was completed manually in the Attune NXT software interface.

Dissolved inorganic nutrients are measured from water column bottle samples taken on NES-LTER Transect cruises (ongoing since 2017) and include nitrate + nitrite, ammonium, silicate, and phosphate. Sampling frequency is approximately seasonal. Samples were filtered, frozen, then processed at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's Nutrient Analytical Facility. Each sample may have up to 2 replicates, indicated by a or b in the data table. These macro-nutrients are analyzed in seawater using a colorimetric assay in which light absorbance is measured versus known standards, and final concentrations are calculated in micromole per liter. Some of the data are from cruises in collaboration with the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI).

Size-fractionated chlorophyll from water column bottle samples collected during NES-LTER Transect cruises, ongoing since 2017.

Size-fractionated chlorophyll a and phaeopigments are measured from discrete bottle samples collected during CTD-rosette casts on Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises (ongoing since 2017), as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass. Sampling frequency is approximately seasonal. Samples were processed by three lab groups using different methods. Size fractions in addition to whole seawater (>0.7 micron) include >5 , <10, >10, and >20 microns with some samples pre-filtered <200 microns. Pigments were analyzed using fluorometers in which fluorescence was measured versus a blank and a standard, and final concentrations were calculated in micrograms per liter (or mg per cubic meter). Some of the data are from cruises in collaboration with the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI).
