Isotopic analysis of extracted water from a larch (Larix decidua) stand in a high mountain watershed (Vallon de Nant - Switzerland)

<p>A total of 185 samples of soil and trees were taken from a stand of larch (Larix decidua) spanning from 1500 to 1600 m.a.s.l. in the Vallon de Nant in the Swiss canton of Vaud. Twenty individual trees and soil were sampled along two transects perpendicular to the main river channel of the Avançon de Nant at approximately midday on seven days in the foliage season between July 2017 and June 2018.</p><p>The data consists of two data (csv) and one document (pdf) files. The sample data file includes the date and estimated time of sampling, the type of sample (vegetation or soil), the transect and tree ID for look-up in the tree metadata file, the soil depth in centimeters, and the determined mean and standard deviation of deuterium, oxygen-18, and oxygen-17. &nbsp; The tree metadata file includes the transect (north or south), the tree ID number, the latitude, longitude, elevation (meters above sea level), and tree height and diameter at breast height in centimeters. &nbsp; Finally, a document describing the methods in more detail is included.&nbsp;</p>

Seasonal sea ice indices including the timing of ice-edge advance and ice-edge retreat (in year day), the ice season duration (in days) and number of actual ice days (versus open water days) within the ice season, extracted for various PAL LTER sub-regions West of the Antarctic Peninsula and derived from passive microwave satellite data for 1979/80 to 2023/24 ice seasons.

The ice season duration is defined as the time elapsed between day of ice-edge advance and day of ice-edge retreat within a given sea ice year, which begins mid-February (mean minimum of summer sea ice extent for the Southern Ocean) and ends the following mid-February. Microbial biomass and water-extractable carbon on Mt. Kilimanjaro

<p>This dataset presents the value of microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and water-extractable carbon (WOC) at study plots under KiLi project.</p> <p>Microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and water-extractable organic carbon (WOC) &ndash; as sensitive and important parameters for soil fertility and C turnover &ndash; are strongly affected by land-use changes all over the world. These effects are particularly distinct upon conversion of natural to agricultural ecosystems due to very fast carbon (C) and nutrient cycles and high vulnerability, especially in the tropics. The objective of this study was to use the unique advantage of Mt. Kilimanjaro &ndash; altitudinal gradient leading to different tropical ecosystems but developed all on the same soil parent material &ndash; to investigate the effects of land-use change and elevation on MBC and WOC contents during a transition phase from dry to wet season. Down to a soil depth of 50&nbsp;cm, we compared MBC and WOC contents of 2 natural (<em>Ocotea</em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Podocarpus</em> forest), 3 seminatural (lower montane forest, grassland, savannah), 1 sustainably used (homegarden) and 2 intensively used (maize field, coffee plantation) ecosystems on an elevation gradient from 950 to 2850&nbsp;m a.s.l.</p> <p>The KiLi project (2010-2018) is a German Science Foundation (DFG) funded research unit (DFG research unit FOR1246) that focuses on biodiversity and ecosystem processes along altitudinal and disturbance gradients on Mt. Kilimanjaro (Tanzania, Africa), capitalizing on its world-wide unique range of climatic and vegetation zones. The research unit comprises 2 central projects and 7 subprojects from various disciplines. On a total of 60 study sites in both natural and human-disturbed ecosystems biodiversity (e.g. plants, soil arthropods, ants, bees, frogs, lizards, bats, birds), related ecosystem processes (decomposition, seed dispersal, pollination, herbivory, predation), and biogeochemical processes and properties of ecosystems (climate, soil properties and nutrient status, regulation of water and carbon fluxes, trace gas emissions, primary productivity, functional diversity) are analyzed.</p>

Effects of drying temperature on potential carbon mineralization and water-extractable organic carbon in Iowa cropland and riparian buffer soils

Measuring carbon dioxide (CO2) produced after re-wetting a previously dried soil is an increasingly popular soil health assay, but there is disagreement on the optimal soil drying temperature. We tested whether soil drying temperature impacts water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) and soil CO2 emissions (potential carbon mineralization) following rewetting of dried soil. Samples were collected at four sites in north-central Iowa, US, and each site had soils planted to corn/soybean or perennial vegetation. The dataset includes measurements of WEOC prior to the incubation experiment, and measurements of CO2 flux and its stable carbon isotope ratio over the course of a 28-day incubation. The manuscript describing these data is under review in Geoderma.

Silica dissolution under a flow of pure water at pressure and temperature conditions relevant to geothermal energy extraction

<p>This dataset is a published product of the 'REFLECT' Project - a Horizon Europe project which aims to inform the processes of geothermal energy extraction by determining the effect of relevant fluid properties and reactions in order to enhance predictive geochemical modelling and thus the energy exploitation and life-time of geothermal power plants.</p><p>The dataset records the concentration of silica measured in water that had been passed through a packed column of quartz grains at temperatures from 200 to 450°C and pressures from 150 to 450 bar. &nbsp;Concentrations are reported as g/ml SiO2, measured photometrically. The reader is referred to the full report for deliverable 1.4 of the REFLECT project for details of the experimental set up and interpretation of the data.</p><p>Silica concentrations marked with (a) are believed to be artificially reduced compared to the rest of the dataset due to a reduction in the surface density of active sites during some of the highest dissolution experiments. &nbsp; The final column lists the chronological order in which the measurements were taken to assist with interpretation of this factor.</p><p>The density marked with (b) represents the density of water at 150 bar and 342°C, rather than the measured condition of 148 bar and 344°C. &nbsp; This is to reflect the fact that the solubility measurement suggests the presence of a liquid phase - the conditions chosen represent the closest point on the phase boundary to the measured conditions. &nbsp; The discrepancy may reflect a small shift in the phase envelope due to silica dissolution in addition to any uncertainty in the <i>pT</i> measurements.</p>

Depth profiles of water column dissolved methane, density and biomass of zooplankton (specifically, Chaoborus spp.), and measurements of methane extracted from Chaoborus spp. during two sampling campaigns in 2016

Depth profiles of water column dissolved methane (CH4), density and biomass of zooplankton (specifically, Chaoborus spp.), and measurements of methane extracted from Chaoborus spp. were collected from Beaverdam Reservoir, Vinton, VA, USA during two, 24-hr intensive sampling campaigns in fall 2016 (3-4 August and 16-17 September). The sampling campaign was designed to test the hypothesis that Chaoborus spp. can transport CH4 from the hypolimnion to the epilimnion of lakes and reservoirs as they migrate to the surface waters from the benthos at night in search of zooplankton prey, and results of the project are published in Carey et al. 2018. During both sampling events, depth profiles of water column methane and Chaoborus spp. density were collected at noon, dusk, midnight, 2 a.m., dawn, and noon the following day at a 1 m resolution. In addition, during the September sampling event depth profiles were collected 1 hour prior to and after dusk. Methane gas was extracted from live Chaoborus individuals at every depth and time point immediately after collection via gentle centrifugation in distilled water following McGinnis et al. 2017.
