Water chemistry data for various lakes near Toolik Research Station, Arctic LTER. Summer 2010 to 2021
Note: Corrections were made to Particulate phosphorus values. See version 5 notes. Decadal file describing the water chemistry in various lakes near Toolik Research Station (68 38'N, 149 36'W) during summers from 2010 to 2021. Chemical analyses were conducted on samples from various depths in the sample lakes either once, or multiple times during the spring, summer and fall months (May to September). Chemical analyses for the samples include alkalinity, dissolved organic and inorganic carbon, inorganic and total dissolved nutrients, particulate carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous, cations and anions.
Mississippi River spatial water chemistry Environmental Research Letters datasets
We mapped surface water chemistry along the entire length of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) to understand spatial patterns in nitrate sources and processing. We used a sensor-based and boat-mounted sensing platform to continuously measure underway water chemistry. Measurements were linked with global positioning systems (GPS) to create maps of surface water chemistry. Here, we archive data associated with an Environmental Research Letters publication (Loken et al. 2018). Data include a single spatial survey of the entire length of the UMR (Minneapolis, Minnesota to Cairo, Illinois) in August 2015 and repeat surveys in Navigation Pool 8 (located near La Crosse, WI). Data have been provided in three formats (raw, hydraulic-corrected, and tau-corrected). Additionally, we archive laboratory chemistry data from water samples collected during the project. Sites include a range of main channel, backwaters, and tributaries. Water chemistry samples were analyzed at the North Temperate Lakes - Long Term Ecological Research facility and linked with underway sensor measurements.
Merged discrete water-column data from PAL LTER research cruises along the Western Antarctic Peninsula, from 1991 to 2024.
Water samples are collected throughout the water column along the Western Antarctic Peninsula at regular LTER grid stations where CTD casts are preformed and in surface waters at underway stations, where CTD casts are not done, using the ship's flow-through seawater system. This dataset is the compilation of water samples collected at these stations, merged from other PAL-LTER datasets. Data includes water column Chlorophyll and Phaeopigment concentrations; phytoplankton accessory pigments -including other chlorophyll's (e.g. chlorophyll b), xanthophylls, and carotenes; primary production rates; bacterial production; dissolved organic carbon; particulate organic carbon and nitrogen; dissolved inorganic nutrients; dissolved oxygen, and dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity. Measurements of phytoplankton Fv/Fm measured using a FIRe (Fluorescence Induction and Relaxation) fluorometer are also included, though caution is urged as FIRe data has not been corrected nor QCed. Conductivity, temperature, depth, and associated data from instruments on the sampling rosette (e.g. PAR, beam transmission) for each sampling depth are also included. Phytoplankton accessory pigment data is unavailable for the LMG10-01 cruise due to instrumentation problems and for the LMG12-01 cruise due to a freezer failure which resulted in the loss of samples. Dissolved oxygen measurements were discontinues after 2012, and thus no data is available from 2013 onwards. Dissolved Organic Carbon data is unavailable after 2012 due to instrumentation problems. There is no Particulate Organic Carbon data for cruise PD94-01.
Plant community data at water sources, Mpala Research Centre, Kenya (2015-2017)
Data package contains four datasets of plant measurements taken at Mpala Research Centre, Laikipia County, Kenya from November 2015-September 2017. Additional code for data analysis is also provided as part of the publication `The effects of herbivore aggregations at water sources on savanna plants differ across soil and climate gradients`.
Bonanza Creek LTER: Stream water chemistry from 2001 to Present in the Caribou Poker Creek Research Watershed near Fairbanks, Alaska
The hydrogeochemistry of nine streams in the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed (CPCRW) during the summers of 2002-2006. In summer 2005, Boston Creek, which is located ca. 20 km east of the CPCRW was sampled. The Boston Creek watershed was extensively burned during the Boundary Fire of 2004. Samples were analyzed for Ca, Mg, Na, K, NH4+, Si, Cl, NO3, SO4, DOC, TDN, DIC, SUVA, pH and conductivity.
Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR): Seasonal water table depth data, 2012-2024
The Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem warming cause a net release of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C, that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool, influence ecosystem C loss?, and 3) How do winter and summer warming alone, and in combination, affect ecosystem C exchange? We are answering these questions using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure ecosystem carbon balance and radiocarbon isotope ratios at a warming experiment located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. This data includes water table depth measurements collected from winter warming and control treatment plots at CiPEHR for the ice-free period of 2024. Note that the experimental warming portion of this experiment concluded in 2022. These data are a continuation of measurements taken at previously warmed plots but plots were not actively manipulated in 2023 and 2024.

In addition, an Excel-File for the diagram of HPA (Figure 2) is accessible.</p> <p>First part of the file name represents the model variant (IRR100, IRR100_S, IRR70_S, NOUSE_S, for details see the manuscript), then the variable name and unit is given (Total Water Storages [mm], groundwater storage [mm], Qb (baseflow) [mm], Rg (diffuse groundwater recharge) [mm], Rg_swb (groundwater recharge below surface water bodies) [mm]). File format is a zipped netCDF. This drying and warming experiment addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem drying, warming and permafrost thaw cause a net release or uptake of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool influence ecosystem C loss? 3) How do drying and warming affect plant communities and ecosystem properties? We are answering these questions using a combined warming and drying experiment (DryPEHR), which is situated with the Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project and located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Warming treatment here refers to growing season air temperature warming (~1C) using open top chambers (OTC) combined with soil 'warming' using snow fences during the snow covered months. Drying is achieved using an automated pumping system that lowers the water table in the dry plots. Soil warming began in 2008; OTCs and drying in 2011. This data includes water table depth measurements collected from the drying experiment (dry and control) at DryPEHR and winter warming and control treatment plots at CiPEHR for the ice-free period of 2011-2020.
Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Thaw Gradient: Seasonal water table depth from 2004-2024
In this larger study, we are asking the question: Is old carbon that comprises the bulk of the soil organic matter pool released in response to thawing of permafrost? We are answering this question by using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure radiocarbon isotope ratios in soil organic matter, soil respiration, and dissolved organic carbon, in tundra ecosystems. The objective of these proposed measurements is to develop a mechanistic understanding of the SOM sources contributing to C losses following permafrost thawing. We are making these measurements at an established tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Field measurements center on a natural experiment where permafrost has been observed to warm and thaw over the past several decades. This area represents a gradient of sites each with a different degree of change due to permafrost thawing. As such, this area is unique for addressing questions at the time and spatial scales relevant for change in arctic ecosystems.

<p>This dataset provides information about water chemical parameters for Lake Paione Inferiore LTER_EU_IT_088: pH, Total alkalinity, conductivity, total nitrogen, major cations (calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium), major anions (sulphate, nitrate, chloride) and silica for the period 1984-2013.</p> <p>Lake Paione Inferiore (LPI) is a high altitude Alpine lake, located at 2002 m a.s.l. in the Bognanco Valley, Province of Verbania, Piedmont Region, Italy. It has a surface area of 0.86 ha and a maximum depth of 13.5 m. The Lake, together with Lake Paione Superiore (LPS), is included in the monitoring sites of the UN-ECE Program ICP WATERS (International Cooperative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Acidification of Rivers and Lakes) for which the CNR Water Research Institute is the National Focal Centre for Italy.</p> <p>This dataset includes the following files: Metadata LTER_EU_IT_088.xls and per each parameter one xls file with data records. High-frequency sensor data collected by Stroud Water Research Center in a meadow reach of White Clay Creek from February 2016 through December 2016
High-frequency sensor data from a YSI 600 OMS Optical Monitoring System (every 15 minutes) and Sontek IQ (every 10 minutes) in a meadow reach at White Clay Creek from February through December 2016. Funded by NSF and DEB as part of the LTREB grant to study the recovery of stream ecosystem structure and function during reforestation, Stroud Water Research Center. The parameters in this data package are water temperature, depth, turbidity, conductivity, specific conductance, water pressure, discharge, rivers ection area, and velocity. Data are presented in four tables which likely have significant overlap. The raw data table presents the data exactly as it was downloaded from the Aquarius Database. It is formatted as a "wide" human-readable table. IQ_stream and YSI_stream present only the data from the respective sensors. These tables are gapfilled so that there are no time gaps. Formatted as a "wide" human-readable table. The full_stream table is all of the data, raw and cleaned, from both sensors. It is organized as a long, tidy table and is optimal for machine readability. All of the parameters and table are further explained in the metadata.

Impacts of wildfire on stream water chemistry in the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed during the summers of 2002-2007
The hydrogeochemistry of two streams (C1 and P6) in the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed (CPCRW) during the summers of 2002-2007. The P6 sub-catchment of the CPCRW was extensively burned during the Boundary Fire of 2004. Samples were analyzed for Ca, Mg, Na, K, NO3, SO4, DOC, TDN, SUVA and conductivity.
