Water transparency in the Laurentian Great Lakes
The Laurentian Great Lakes in the mid-east region of North America is one of the largest freshwater ecosystems in the world. This data set contains limnological data, focusing on underwater transparency in this ecosystem and the surrounding region from 1999-2024. Current water transparency data sets highlight the increase in offshore transparency measured by a deepening of average Secchi Disk depth since the invasion of the Dreissenid mussels. However, limited data exists on the Great Lakes to provide insight to the underwater optical environment of the offshore, nearshore, and surrounding water bodies of these lakes. These data illustrate the vertical underwater light environment with data from wavelengths of sunlight including photosynthetically active radiation (400 – 700 nm), UV-A radiation (320 - 400 nm) and UV-B radiation (290 - 320 nm). Understanding the depths to which these specific wavelengths of sunlight reach within a lake, as well as the substances within the lake that may influence the attenuation of sunlight can provide a picture of how habitats within the lake system have been impacted. This data set is a part of a continuous data collaboration among multiple research groups, and will be updated periodically as more data are made available. As such, this data set provides a snapshot of water transparency in the Great Lakes. The data here are contained in four files, including WaterTransparencyData_GreatLakes.csv, SiteInformation_GreatLakes.csv, Methods_GreatLakes.csv, and Variables_GreatLakes. The main data are in WaterTransparencyData_GreatLakes.csv. SiteInformation_GreatLakes.csv, Methods_GreatLakes.csv, and Variables_GreatLakes.csv support the main data file with descriptions of the sampling sites, methods by which samples were processed, and descriptions of variables, respectively.
Raw Data for: Fast rate dual-comb spectrometer in the water-transparent 7.5-11.5 μm region
<p>This repository shares the data acquired and used to produce the figures in the paper "Fast rate dual-comb spectrometer in the water-transparent 7.5-11.5 μm region" published in Optics Letters (DOI: <a href="https://doi.org/10.1364/OL.515199">https://doi.org/10.1364/OL.515199</a>)</p> <p><br>The "Figure_Data" zip file contains a ".txt" file for each Figure present in the Main Paper and Supplemental Document. The raw data acquired by the FT spectrometer and uploaded here for Figure 2 are afterward smoothed and normalized properly in the Main Paper to better show the spectra. Data shown in Figure 3 are calculated from the corresponding raw data. Data used for Figure 4 are calculated from the corresponding raw blank DCS data. Data for Figure 5, 6 and S1 are retrieved from the corresponding raw Gas DCS data upon Cepstral removal of the spectral baseline and spectral fit exploiting the Hitran Database.</p> <p><br>The "Raw_Data" zip file contains the postprocessed Data of the DCS measurements and the RIN data as acquired. The Raw data of the DCS measurements as acquired are too large to be uploaded here, but may be obtained from the authors upon request.<br>"NH3_1o6kHz_IGMmean", "N2O_5o1kHz_IGMmean", "N2O_26kHz_IGMmean" contain the DCS interferogram averaged over 15s of acquisition for Gas measurements, performed with different DeltaFrep as described in the main text of the paper.<br>"Blank_1o6kHz_IGMs", "Blank_5o1kHz_IGMs", "Blank_26kHz_IGMs" contain all the phase corrected DCS interferograms acquired over 100ms, used to calculate the average SNR shown in Figure 4.<br>"RIN_DFG" contain the raw data acquired from the detector for RIN calculations, with an average voltage values of 25mV.</p> <p><br>The scripts for processing the Raw Data and retrieve the data as shown in the paper are home made.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p>

Data for: Water depth and transparency drive the quantity and quality of organic matter in sediments of Alpine lakes on the Tibetan Plateau
<p>The primary objectives of the study were to: (i) determine OM quantity and quality in the sediments of alpine lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, (ii) identify the primary environmental regulators of OM quantity and quality, and (iii) reveal OM transformations in the water column and sediments.</p> <p>Firstly, we collected sediments and lake water from 20 lakes with diverse morphology and sizes across the entire Tibetan Plateau.</p> <p>Secondly, We analyzed the bulk sedimentary OM and two leachable pools of the sedimentary OM, i.e., water-soluble OM and alkaline-extracted OM combining elemental and stable isotopic analysis, optical measurements (i.e., absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy), and ultrahigh-resolution molecular techniques (i.e., electrospray ionization-assisted Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, ESI FT-ICR MS). We also measured the lake water physicochemical characteristics (i.e., depth, transparency, salinity, turbidity, DO, pH, TN, TP and Chl a), as well as the composition of dissolved OM in water column via optical measurements.</p> <p>Thirdly, we performed statistical analysis to determine the primary environmental control and predictors of the spatial variability in sedimentary OM on the Tibetan Plateau. The statistical analysis included non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis with Dunn post hoc test, redundancy analysis, and linear regression models.</p> <p>Main results of the study are that (i) sedimentary water-soluble OM and alkaline-extracted OM were both dominated by low-molecular-weight, low-aromaticity compounds with low contributions of terrestrial humic substances, suggesting that sedimentary leachable OM was primarily regulated by in-lake sources and processes; (ii) water depth, water transparency, and total phosphorus concentration in water column explained ~50% variance of sedimentary bulk and leachable OM, substantiating the importance of autochthonous sources and primary productivity in regulating the quantity and quality of sedimentary OM; (iii) in comparison to lake surface water DOM, water-soluble OM and alkaline-extracted OM from sediments had higher proportions of terrestrial humic-like substances, suggesting preferential preservation of allochthonous materials in the sediments.</p>

Mean annual Secchi depth measurements in the period starting in 1969 provide a measure of water column transparency in the CalCOFI inshore and offshore areas, 1969 - 2004.
The Secchi depth provides a measure of water turbidity. Measurements are made as part of the California Fisheries Cooperative Investigations (CalCOFI). Secchi depth is measured on each station on each cruise. The mean annual is obtained by averaging stations over time and at stations defined as either inshore or offshore.
