A Non-galvanic D-band MMIC-to-Waveguide Transition Using eWLB Packaging Technology-dataset

This paper presents a novel D-band interconnect implemented in a low-cost embedded Wafer Ball Grid Array (eWLB) commercial process. The transition is realized through a patch slot antenna directly radiating to a standard waveguide opening. The interconnect achieves low insertion loss and good bandwidth. The measured minimum Insertion Loss (IL) is 2 dB and the average is 3 dB across a bandwidth of 22% covering the frequency range 110-138 GHz. In addition, the structure is easy to integrate as it does not require any special assembly nor any galvanic contacts. Adopting the low-cost eWLB process and standard waveguides makes the transition an attractive solution for interconnects beyond 100 GHz.

Elliptical Alignment Holes Enabling Accurate Direct Assembly of Microchips to Standard Waveguide Flanges at sub-THz Frequencies - Dataset

Current waveguide flange standards do not allow for the accurate fitting of microchips, due to the large mechanical tolerances of the flange alignment pins and the brittle nature of Silicon, requiring greatly oversized alignment holes on the chip to fit worst-case fabrication tolerances, resulting in unacceptably large misalignment error for sub-THz frequencies. This paper presents, for the first time, a new method for directly aligning micromachined Silicon chips to standard, i.e. unmodified, waveguide flanges with alignment accuracy significantly better than the waveguide-flange fabrication tolerances, through the combination of a tightly-fitting circular and an elliptical alignment hole on the chip. A Monte Carlo analysis predicts the reduction of the mechanical assembly margin by a factor of 5.5 compared to conventional circular holes, reducing the potential chip misalignment from 46 μm to 8.5 μm for a probability of fitting of 99.5%. For experimental verification, micromachined waveguide chips using either conventional (oversized) circular or the proposed elliptical alignment holes were fabricated and measured. A reduction in the standard deviation of the reflection coefficient by a factor of up to 20 was experimentally observed from a total of 200 measurements with random chip placement, exceeding the
expectations from the Monte Carlo analysis. To our knowledge, this paper presents the first solution for highly accurate assembly
of micromachined waveguide chips to standard waveguide flanges, requiring no custom flanges or other tailor-made split blocks.

Dual-band Reflectarray Antennas Using Integrated Resonant and Non-Resonant Natures of Metallic Waveguide Elements at Millimeter Wave Frequencies

Pure metallic reflectarray antennas have good power efficiency and low fabrication cost, which were limited to single band operation. A dual-band reflectarray antenna is developed for two directional beams by two feeds. The reflecting elements are metal waveguides, and have novel properties of both resonant and non-resonant modes at the two frequency bands. The low and high frequency bands can be easily separated by the cutoff frequency of waveguide modes. The phase changing mechanisms via ray optics and fundamental waveguide modes, respectively provide simple formulations for elemental structure design of directional beams. Radiation characteristics of the linear and circular polarizations are cross-examined with good performance by full-wave simulations using HFSS, FEKO and CST at 28 and 60 GHz bands for 5G front-haul network applications.

Bimodal Phase Diagram of the Superfluid Density in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 Revealed by an Interfacial Waveguide Resonator (Dataset)

We explore the superconducting phase diagram of the two-dimensional electron system at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface by monitoring the frequencies of the cavity modes of a coplanar waveguide resonator fabricated in the interface itself. We determine the phase diagram of the superconducting transition as a function of temperature and electrostatic gating, finding that both the superfluid density and the transition temperature follow a dome shape, but that the two are not monotonically related. The ground state of this 2DES is interpreted as a Josephson junction array, where a transition from long- to short-range order occurs as a function of the electronic doping. The synergy between correlated oxides and superconducting circuits is revealed to be a promising route to investigate these exotic compounds, complementary to standard magneto-transport measurements.

Stable and compact RF-to-optical link using lithium niobate on insulator waveguides

Stable and compact RF-to-optical link using lithium niobate on insulator waveguides

Optical frequency combs have become a very powerful tool in metrology and beyond thanks to their ability to link radio frequencies with optical frequencies via a process known as self-referencing. Typical self-referencing is accomplished in two steps: the generation of an octave-spanning supercontinuum spectrum and the frequency-doubling of one part of that spectrum. Traditionally, these two steps have been performed by two separate optical components. With the advent of photonic integrated circuits, the combination of these two steps has become possible in a single small and monolithic chip. One photonic integrated
circuit platform very well suited for on-chip self-referencing is lithium niobate on insulator - a platform characterised by high second and third order nonlinearities. Here we show that combining a lithium niobate on insulator waveguide with a silicon photodiode results in a very compact and direct low-noise path towards self-referencing of mode-locked lasers. Using digital servo electronics, the resulting frequency comb is fully stabilized. Its high degree of stability is verifed with an independent out-of-loop measurement and is quantifed to be 6.8 mHz. Furthermore, we show that the spectrum generated inside the lithium niobate waveguide remains stable over many hours.

Data for: A coupled optical waveguides system in a fluidic medium that elucidates different parity-time-symmetric phases

This research introduces a novel methodology of harnessing liquids to facilitate the realization of parity-time (PT)- symmetric optical waveguides on highly integrated microscale platforms. Additionally, we propose a realistic and detailed fabrication process flow, demonstrating the practical feasibility of fabricating our optofluidic system, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical design and actual implementation. Extensive research has been conducted over the past two decades on PT-symmetric systems across various fields, given their potential to foster a new generation of compact, power-efficient sensors and signal processors with enhanced performance. Passive PT-symmetry in optics can be achieved by evanescently coupling two optical waveguides and incorporating an optically lossy material into one of the waveguides. The essential coupling distance between two optical waveguides in air is usually less than 500 nm for nearinfrared wavelengths and under 100 nm for ultraviolet wavelengths. This necessitates the construction of the coupling region via expensive and time-consuming electron beam lithography, posing a significant manufacturing challenge for the mass production of PT-symmetric optical systems. We propose a solution to this fabrication challenge by introducing liquids capable of dynamic flow between optical waveguides. This technique allows the attainment of evanescent wave coupling with coupling gap dimensions compatible with standard photolithography processes. Consequently, this paves the way for the cost-effective, rapid and large-scale production of PT-symmetric optofluidic systems, applicable across a wide range of fields.
