Defining fatty acids changes linked to rumen development, weaning and growth within Holstein-Friesian heifers

<p>After birth, as effectively monogastric animals, calves undergo substantial physiological changes to become ruminants by 3 months of age and reach sexual maturity at approximately 15 months of age. Herein, we assess longitudinal metabolomic changes in Holstein-Friesian (HF) heifers from birth until sexual maturity during this developmental process. Sera from 20 healthy, HF heifers were sampled biweekly from 2 weeks of age until 13 months of age and then monthly until 19 months of age. Sera were assessed using flow infusion electrospray high resolution mass spectrometry (FIE-HRMS) on a Q Exactive hybrid quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometer for high throughput, sensitive, non-targeted metabolite fingerprinting. Partial least squares-discriminate analysis (PLS-DA) and unsupervised hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) of the derived metabolomes indicated changes detectable in heifers&rsquo; sera over time. Time series analyses identified 30 metabolites that could be related to rumen development and weaning at ~ 3 months of age. Further time series analysis identified 40 metabolites that could be correlated to growth. These findings highlight the role of acetic acid and 3-PP within rumen development and growth, suggest that weaning induces elevated levels of fatty acyls in response to a post-weaning stress induced innate immune response and demonstrate the utilisation of fatty acyls in growth. The identified metabolites offer serum metabolites which could inform the nutrition and healthy development of heifers</p>

Post-weaning survival in kangaroos is high and constant until senescence: Implications for population dynamics

<p>Large herbivores typically have consistently high prime-aged adult survival and lower, more variable, juvenile and senescent survival. Many kangaroo populations undergo greater fluctuations in density than other large herbivores, but age- and sex-specific survival of kangaroos and their response to environmental variation remain poorly estimated. We used long-term capture-mark-recapture data on 920 individuals to investigate the survival component of eastern grey kangaroo (<em>Macropus giganteus</em>) population dynamics. Forage availability and population density were monitored quarterly and included as predictors of survival in Bayesian Cormack-Jolly-Seber models. Annual survival probabilities were estimated for 5 age classes: 0 years (juveniles), 1–2 years (sub-adults), 3–6 years (prime-aged adults), 7–9 years (pre-senescent adults), and ≥10 years (senescent adults). Survival of juveniles varied widely during our 12-year study, ranging from 0.07–0.90 for females and 0.05–0.92 for males. Sub-adult survival was 0.80–0.93 for females and 0.75–0.85 for males, while that of prime-aged adults was ≥0.94 for females and ≥0.83 for males, despite large fluctuations in forage and density. The survival of pre-senescent adults spanned 0.86–0.93 for females and 0.60–0.86 for males. Senescent survival was variable, at 0.49–0.90 for females and 0.49–0.80 for males. Male survival was significantly lower than female survival in prime-aged and pre-senescent adults, but not in other age classes. Although most models supported by WAIC selection included one or a combination of environmental covariates, none of these individual covariates had a discernable effect on survival. Temporal variability in overall survival was mostly due to changes in survival of juvenile and senescent kangaroos. Kangaroo survival patterns are similar to those of ungulates, suggesting a strong role of sex-age structure on population dynamics.</p>

Data and R code for: Survival to weaning in arid-country vervet monkeys

<p>We addressed the relative contributions of maternal rank and sociability to the survival of infant vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) to nutritional independence (~210 days)&nbsp;in a resource-poor environment. Data from 153 infants across three troops and 10 birth cohorts indicated a pre-weaning mortality of 30% (Range: 9%-85%), with a median age at death of 50 days. In addition to the consequences of resource availability, increased&nbsp;infant survival was independently and equivalently associated with higher maternal rank&nbsp;and a greater number of maternal spatial partners. We use this outcome to suggest that apparent discrepancies in the relative importance of different maternal attributes in determining reproductive outcomes may be resolved by considering more closely local&nbsp;&nbsp;sources of infant mortality.</p>

Data from: Evaluating tooth strontium and barium as indicators of weaning age in Pacific walruses

<p>A dataset of calcium-normalized <sup>88</sup>Sr and <sup>137</sup>Ba concentrations from laser ablation transects across the cementum layer of 107 (female: n = 84, male: n = 23) Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) teeth. Dataset includes spreadsheets containing elapsed time of laser ablation transect in seconds (ElapsedTime_s; laser transect speed = 5μm/s), calcium-normalized strontium concentrations (Sr_ppm_m88; values below limit of detection replaced with 1/2*limit of detection, see methods), and calcium-normalized barium concentrations (Ba_ppm_m137; values below limit of detection replaced with 0.5*limit of detection). Photos (in .tif format) of tooth cementum used to estimate the positions of cementum growth layer groups are included for each animal. For teeth where more than one laser ablation scar is visible in the photo, an arrow is included to indicate the laser ablation scar that corresponds with the included trace element data. Finally, a Word document containing metadata (Catalog Number/ID, Sex, Median Age Est., Coll. Year, Est. Birth Year), weaning age estimates produced by both a visual and mathematical method (Sr Vis. Est., Sr Math. Est., Ba Vis. Est., Ba Math. Est.), and a descriptive grouping of the patterns of accumulation of Sr and Ba (Sr Pat., Ba Pat.) are included. Prebiotic galactooligosaccharide (GOS) effects on suckling and weaned pigs

<p>Galactooligosaccharides were supplemented to gruel creep diets during farrowing and/or in phase 1 nursery diets.  Growth performance, intestinal health parameters (such as GI morphology, short-chain fatty acids &amp; microbial community) and plasma cytokins were evaluated under the hypothesis that GOS would improve piglet growth through its prebiotic effects as it is fermented in the intestine.</p>
