O. mykiss passages at the Stanislaus River weir, 2005-2025

The Central Valley Project Improvement Act (CVPIA) provides funds to aid the San Joaquin Basin Steelhead Collaborative and initiate a Steelhead Life-Cycle Monitoring Program. This dataset includes observations of O. mykiss in the Stanislaus River during the steelhead spawning migration period, September through May. Fish are observed at an Alaskan-style weir outfitted with a VAKI Riverwatcher fish counting device. The counting device provides visual records of upstream passing individuals that are later reviewed by an experienced biologist. During times when the counting device is offline, a continuous video feed is reviewed to provide counts and identifications of passing fish. The length of passing fish is estimated using a known body depth to length ratio derived from individuals trapped and measured at the weir. The weir also has a trap box that, when closed, allows investigators to physically capture fish for measurements, biological sample collection, and injection of a PIT tag. There is also a PIT tag antenna affixed to the weir allowing detection of PIT tagged fish. There are three datasets currently associated with this project, 1) passage data for all O. mykiss from 2005 through 2025, 2) O. mykiss that were captured and processed from the trap, and 3) PIT tag detections from the PIT antenna.

Monitoring juvenile Chinook salmon outmigration using rotary screw traps on the Sacramento River near Tisdale Weir

The Tisdale RST sampling site is operated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to obtain information on the temporal distribution, relative abundance, and composition of race and species of juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and steelhead trout (O. mykiss) emigrating from the upper Sacramento River and tributaries to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta). The project collects data near the Tisdale Weir on the Sacramento River, using two paired rotary screw traps (RSTs) outfitted with two 8-ft diameter cones. The RST monitoring site at Tisdale Weir was established meet a requirement of the 2011 amendment to the reasonable and prudent alternative (RPA) of the 2009 biological and conference opinion (BO) on the long-term operations of the Central Valley Project (CVP) and State Water Project (SWP). The amendment required the Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) and the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) to fund a new juvenile salmonid monitoring site on the Sacramento River between Red Bluff Diversion Dam (RBDD) and Knights Landing. The purpose of the new site was to provide early warning of fish movement and determine survival of listed fish species leaving spawning habitat in the upper Sacramento River. CDFW issued ITP 2081-2019-066-00 to DWR on March 31, 2020, for the long-term operation of the SWP in the Delta. Condition 7.5.2 of the ITP requires the development and establishment of a spring-run Chinook salmon juvenile production estimate (JPE) to increase understanding regarding the impacts water operations have on the spring-run Chinook salmon population in the Sacramento River watershed and inform the development of minimization measures to reduce take of spring-run Chinook salmon at Delta fish salvage facilities. Data from the Tisdale RST will be used along with other datasets from juvenile salmonid monitoring programs in the Sacramento River Watershed to inform the development of JPE modeling approaches. Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Sediment Yield in Weir Basins, 1956 - ongoing

Each year the sediment that collects in the stilling basin behind the v-notch weir is measured, excavated, sampled, dried, and weighed for Watersheds 1 through 8 at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. Oven-dry weights are then calculated for all the sediment removed from the basin and extrapolated back over the watershed as mass of soil material lost per unit area. These data were gathered at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in Woodstock, NH, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Data for: A novel and enhanced calibration of the tilting weir as a flow measurement structure

<p>To achieve reliable and equitable water distribution it is necessary to accurately estimate the volumetric discharge of water flow through rivers and canals. One such method of accomplishing this is by using hydraulic structures, such as the tilting weir. This structure not only can be used to measure the discharge of water on a continuous basis, but also allows for regulating the water level upstream of the structure. Presently, tilting weirs are often used to control water levels, but the literature on their utilization as flow measurement structures has remained sparse. This study presents a thorough analysis of laboratory experiments on scaled models of tilting weirs, where the flow depth upstream of the structure (i.e., head) and the inclination angle are used to calibrate an equation to estimate the discharge to a high degree of accuracy. Operational guidelines to ensure minimum uncertainty in measurement are also given.</p> <p>The data published here include head and discharge measurements for all experiments conducted, including information on the experimental location, date, and model dimensions. Publication of this data is intended to allow other researchers to verify the calibration procedure laid out in the primary article, and as a comparative dataset for future calibrations.</p>

<p>This dataset contains the results from the experimental tests carried out at the hydraulics laboratory of the Civil Engineering School, at University of A Coru&ntilde;a (Spain), as part of the VAMONOS (Vertically-averaged models for non-hydrostatic flows) project (CTM2017-85171-C2-2-R). The aim of the project is the development of enhanced 2D river flow models including additional terms to account for non-hydrostatic pressure and mixed flow conditions around hydraulic structures.</p> <p>This data package includes experimental results on 9 different weir geometries that were tested in an open channel. The experimental facility consists of a 15 m flume with a square cross section of 0.5 x 0.5 m. Water depths were measured with an automatic data acquisition system on a grid of approximately 125 points. Each weir was tested under two different flow conditions. In all the tests the inlet discharge was close to 30 l/s, while the downstream water level was varied from one test to another, in order to obtain fully submerged and free discharge conditions.</p> <p>This dataset is structured in two pdf documents and three folders:</p> <ul> <li><em>Summary_tests.pdf</em>. This file summarizes all the experimental tests.&nbsp;</li> <li><em>Data_package_description.pdf</em>. This document includes information about the experimental facilities, the test conditions and the uploaded files.</li> <li><em>Raw_data.</em> This folder includes the raw data recorded during the tests.</li> <li><em>Matlab_files. </em>This folder contains three Matlab files (.m) that can be used to process the raw data and to generate some figures.</li> <li><em>Processed_data. </em>This folder contains three documents per weir that include the results obtained after processing the raw data. For each test, it is possible to find a pdf with the weir geometry and a text file with the results of the submerged and free discharge tests.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Those interested in experimental data for the calibration of numerical models or the analysis of empirical discharge rating curves, are suggested to work only with the data included in the folder <em>Processed_data.</em></strong></p> <p>Further details on the experimental setup are given in the document <em>Data_package_description.pdf</em></p>
