Dataset on the Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare for the EU27 and beyond.
<div>This dataset contains data about two ISEWs for the EU27, its individual Member States (MS), the UK and the US. Following Van der Slycken and Bleys (2023) (1), two variants of the ISEW are presented in this dataset: the ISEW_BCE accounts for the benefits and costs of the present and pasts activities experienced in the present and within a specific country (Benefits and Costs Experienced); the ISEW_BCPA accounts for the benefits and costs of present activities experienced in the present and in the future, both domestically and internationally (Benefits and Costs of Present economic Activities).</div> <div> </div> <div>This document contains different datasets. Two datasets contain a summary of the values of the ISEWs and their components in ‘per capita’ terms. One summary presents the results for the EU27 (and MS) and the other one presents the results for the UK and the US (Non-EU countries). <p>This is a database generated within Feed-a-Gene (H2020) and GENEF (Spanish INIA) projects. It comprise feeding, growth and body performance of Duroc pigs. Assessment of dairy cow welfare in small-scale farming systems dataset
<p>This database was created as preparatory work for the Scientific Opinion on the assessment of dairy cow welfare in small-scale farming systems (EFSA, 2015) to collect data for the description and the categorisation of European Small-Scale Dairy Farms (SSDF) based on size, farming system and husbandry practices and (ii) to analyse the feasibility in SSDF of animal-based measures usually used for intensive farming. The Scientific Opinion was necessary to address specific expectations of consumers on locally produced food and acceptable animal welfare conditions in the context of the EU Strategy for the protection and welfare of animals 2012-2015.</p> <p>The on-farm survey was run to collect data for welfare assessment covering Austria, France, Italy and Spain. A total of 124 farms with up to 75 cows were selected based on three criteria reflecting use of local resources or enrolment in a certification scheme: (1) the type of enterprise (ownership and workers), (2) the use of inputs in the production process, including the use of local feed and local breeds, and (3) the production type (certification schemes). From 124 dairy farms visited 119 were considered as SSDF. Among the 119 farms included in the survey as non-conventional, some of them had a very small herd size (44 had less than 25 cows and one had only 10 cows) and some of them had more animals (19 farms had between 51 and 75 dairy cows).</p> <p>The database includes 53 continuous and categorical farm descriptor variables, 23 continuous and categorical risk-factor variables and 47 animal-based measures in small-scale farms. The final data model used was based on data collection at farm/herd level, pen level and animal level.</p>

Data and code for: The welfare problems of wide-ranging Carnivora reflect naturally itinerant lifestyles
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Carnivora with naturally small annual home ranges can adjust well to the evolutionarily new environment of captivity, but wider-ranging species are vulnerable to stress. To investigate why, we identified eight correlates of home range size (reflecting energetic needs, movement, intra-specific interactions, and itinerant lifestyles). We systematically assessed whether these correlates predict welfare better than range size itself, using data on captive juvenile mortality (from 13,518 individuals across 42 species) and stereotypic route-tracing (456 individuals, 27 species). Rather than large ranges </span><em><span>per se</span><span>, </span></em><span>i</span><span>tinerant lifestyles (quantified via ratios of daily to annual travel distances in nature) were found to confer risk, predicting greater captive juvenile losses and stereotypic time-budgets. </span><span><span>This result<em><span> </span></em>advances<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>our<em><span> </span></em></span></span><span><span>understanding of the evolutionary basis for welfare problems in captive Carnivora, helping to explain why naturally sedentary species (e.g. American mink) may breed even in intensive farm conditions, while others (e.g. polar bears, giant pandas) can struggle even in modern zoos/breeding centres. Naturally itinerant lifestyles involve decision-making and strategic shifts to new locations, suggesting that supplying more novelty, cognitive challenge and/or opportunities for control will be effective ways to meet these animals' motivational needs in captivity. Such findings could therefore assist with both collection planning and enclosure design.</span></span></p>

Effects of protected areas on welfare of local households: the case of Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya
<ol> <li>Protected areas are vital for biodiversity conservation although some have been criticized for not providing adequate socio-economic benefits to local people. However, empirical studies on socio-economic impacts of protected areas that control for confounding factors are rare.</li> <li>Here, we assessed the potential impacts of Maasai Mara National Reserve in South-Western Kenya on welfare (indicated by levels of income, consumption, and assets) of, and poverty incidence among 423 randomly selected local households. We used descriptive statistics to summarize demographic and socio-economic statuses of the households. Then, we estimated effects of the protected area on welfare of the households using ordinary least - squares regression model and entropy balancing.</li> <li>The protected area did not have any significant effect on welfare of, and poverty levels among the households. Households that lived within a 5 km radius of the protected area boundary incurred significantly higher crop destruction and livestock depredation losses than households that lived 5 - 25 km from the boundary. Nevertheless, majority of the households held positive views about the protected area due to direct and indirect benefits that they had already gained or expected to gain from it in the future.</li> <li>These results suggest that interventions are needed to reduce losses caused by wildlife in the protected area and improve its social and economic benefits to the local households.</li> </ol>

Ripple resonance amplifies economic welfare loss from weather extremes
<p>Using the loss-propagation model Acclimate (doi: 10.5281/zenodo.853345) we computed the regional and sectoral economic repercussion due to single disasters categories (heat stress, floods and tropical cyclones) as well as their consecutive disaster scenarios. The name component "en-20xx" refers to the economic network baseline. Our main analysis was based on the economic network of 2015.</p> <p>These data sets contain the annual aggregated economic quantities: production, production value, production (zero), direct loss, direct loss value, total loss, total value loss, consumption (zero), consumption value, consumption, GDP, GDP value, GDP (zero). Consumption and GDP (and corresponding variables) are regional quantities and therefore have only one non-NaN sectoral dimension (dimension zero). Quantities with a “(zero)” correspond to the annual baseline of the quantity (leap years taken into account).</p> <p>The quantities of the disaster scenarios are divided as follows:<br> Heat stress: hs_observable<br> Floods: fl_observable<br> Tropical cyclones: tc_observable<br> Consecutive disasters: cp_observable</p> <p>These variables have - next to “year”, “region”, “sector”, and “quantities” - the dimensions of the corresponding representative concentration pathway, global climate model, tropical cyclone season realization and hydrological model.</p>

Data and R code from: Nature calls: intelligence and natural foraging style predict welfare problems in captive parrots
<p>Around half of all parrots (a highly threatened order) live in captivity. Here, some species thrive. Others, however, breed poorly or display stereotypic behaviours indicating stress. Using data on the prevalence of three types of stereotypic behaviour in pet (50 species; 1,378 individuals) and aviculture hatch rates (115 species; 10,255 breeding pairs), we applied Phylogenetic Comparative Methods (PCMs) to test hypothesised causes of this variation (relating to species' rarity and constraints on natural behaviour). In the first empirical evidence that high intelligence increases vulnerability to poor captive welfare, species with large relative brain sizes were found to be most at risk of oral and whole-body stereotypic behaviour. This suggests that if they are to be kept in private homes, such parrots must be offered substantially more cognitive stimulation. Self-harming behaviours involving feather damage were predicted by naturally relying on food items that require substantial handling, highlighting inadequacies in captive diets (often highly processed); while relatively low hatch rates in aviculture were predicted by small captive population sizes, potentially due to genetic bottlenecks, inbreeding, and/or low availability of compatible mates. These novel findings should help advance captive parrot husbandry, and inspire further research applying PCMs to understand and improve animal welfare.</p>
Excel data coding file for child welfare reform scoping review
<p><span>While there have been ongoing calls to reform child welfare so that it better meets children's and families' needs,</span> <span>to date there have been no comprehensive summaries of child welfare reform strategies. For this systematic scoping review, we summarized authors' recommendations for improving child welfare. We conducted a systematic search (2010 to 2021) and included published reviews that addressed authors' recommendations for improving child welfare for children, youth, and families coming into contact with child welfare in high-income countries. A total of 4,758 records was identified by the systematic search, 685 full-text articles were screened for eligibility, and 433 reviews were found to be eligible for this scoping review. Reviews were theoretically divided, with some review authors arguing for reform efforts at the macro level (e.g., addressing poverty) and others arguing for reform efforts at the practice level (e.g., implementing evidence-based parenting programs). Reform efforts across socioecological levels were summarized in this scoping review. An important next step is to formulate what policy solutions are likely to lead to the greatest improvement in safety and well-being for children and families involved in child welfare. </span></p>
