Water Chemistry and Well Levels at Upper Bigelow Brook, Harvard Forest 2009-2010

This dataset is the result of a full year of high-resolution monitoring of hydrologic event-driven export of stream dissolved organic matter from the Upper Pipe site on Bigelow Brook at Harvard Forest. In situ measurements of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) and conductivity were collected from October of 2009 to December of 2010. Grab samples of water were collected during hydrological events and analyzed using standard methods for dissolved organic matter, nitrate, ammonium, and dissolved organic nitrogen. Water level measurements in wells at this study site were initiated in May of 2010.

Microcystin-LR (one of the toxic congeners of microcystin) exposure causes crayfish to forget previous fight outcomes as well as previous opponents, MI, 2025

Harmful algal blooms are increasing across the globe as a function of nutrient run off and climate change. While the study of the mechanisms that underlie the blooms themselves are abundant, the impact of the toxins produced by blooms needs more research. Crayfish are keystone species in aquatic habitats and rely on chemoreception for many of their ecosystem functions. Crayfish were placed in a fight arena for measure both the outcome and dynamics aspects of agonistic encounters. Then the loser of the fights were exposed to either controls or microcystin for four days. Afterwards, the crayfish fought either another unfamiliar opponent or the previous opponent. The data contained in this package has the concentrations of microcystin exposure, morphological data on the crayfish, and then behavioral data from the two different fights. The behavioral data has two categories: time spent at different levels of intensity and time it took the crayfish pair to reach a certain intensity.

Ground water levels for 964 monitoring wells in Wisconsin, 1929 - 2015

This dataset contains the daily groundwater level observations and other monitoring well attributes in Wisconsin. It covers 964 groundwater level monitoring wells and has 400,812 observations. The time span of this dataset is between February 2nd, 1929 and December 31st, 2015. The data sources include United States Geological Survey (USGS), Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), University of Wisconsin Extension, counties in Central Sands area, and North Temperate Lakes - Long-Term Ecological Research (NTL-LTER). The data compilation consists of three major steps. First, the data were retrieved from different data sources. Then the data from different sources were pooled together. No well was monitored by more than one entity so none of the wells’ records were merged. Third, two rounds of quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) were conducted. Wells in confined aquifers were not included in this dataset. The values of the USGS and Central Sands data are the depth to the water whereas LTER values are mean sea level elevations of the groundwater levels. These data could not be directly compared with each other. This data compilation was funded by the Wisconsin Groundwater Joint Solicitation.

Wisconsin creel dataset as well as predictor variables for lakes from 1990 to 2017 to estimate statewide recreational fisheries harvest

Recreational fisheries have high economic worth, valued at $190B globally. An important, but underappreciated, secondary value of recreational catch is its role as a source of food. This contribution is poorly understood due to difficulty in estimating recreational harvest at spatial scales beyond an individual system, as traditionally estimated from angler creel surveys. Here, we address this gap using a 28-year creel survey of ~300 Wisconsin inland lakes. We develop a statistical model of recreational harvest for individual lakes and then scale-up to unsurveyed lakes (3769 lakes; 73% of statewide lake surface area) to generate a statewide estimate of recreational lake harvest of ~4200 t and an estimated annual angler consumption rate of ~3 kg, nearly double estimated United States per capita freshwater fish consumption. Recreational fishing harvest makes significant contributions to human diets, is critical for discussions on food security, and the multiple ecosystem services of freshwater systems.

Salt River Wetlands denitrification rate, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium rate, dissolved organic carbon concentration in June 2016 as well as soil porosity and bulk density

Raw and derived data used to calculate denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate to ammonium (DNRA) from push-pull experiments with added isotopically labelled nitrate. Experiments were conducted in 2016 in the Salt River Accidental Wetlands in three different patch types: Unvegetated, dominated by Ludwigia peploides, and dominated by Typha species (T. domingensis and T. latifolia). Data include start and end of incubation concentration of nitrate, ammonium, atom percent 15N in ammonium, dissolved organic carbon, excess mass 29-N2, and excess mass 30-N2. Soil data was collected from the same patch types including soil moisture, porosity, and bulk density.

Marcell Experimental Forest 30-minute water table elevation and temperature from transects of wells in the S2 and S6 peatlands, 2018-ongoing

This data publication contains 30-minute water table elevation and temperature data collected along bog to lagg transects within two watersheds at the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota. The bog to lagg transects are located on the north and south sides of S2 and S6 peatlands and contain three surface water wells each. The water table elevations provide information to calculate the hydraulic gradients that drive flow to and from the bogs. The collection of these data was funded by the US Department of Energy. The research program at Marcell Experimental Forest is managed by the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station.

Indirect impacts of a novel wildfire on a well-studied desert stream: connectivity, carbon, and communities

In 2020 the Bush Fire burned approximately half of the Sycamore Creek watershed in central Arizona. Sycamore Creek has been subject to >40 years of research and the stream has been monitored by NEON since 2017. We studied the effects of fire on biogeochemistry of the stream and its watershed. We deployed autosamplers to monitor stream chemistry during storms on the mainstem and in ephemeral tributaries draining burned and unburned watersheds. The storm sampling program commenced nearly a year following the fire because absence of summer monsoon or winter storms in 2020-21 resulted in no flow in tributaries and intermittent flow in the mainstem. Water chemistry was measured during 14 monsoon storms of 2021 and winter frontal storms of 2021-22 with samples of baseflow collected in the mainstem during intervening periods. Water samples were analyzed for dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and major anions and cations. We also measured nutrient content of ash and chemistry of ash leachate as a potential source of solutes to stream biota.

Continuous groundwater well temperature, salinity and water level measurements at the GCE-LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) site from May 2014 to February 2018

The Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) is a large-scale field experiment designed to simulate saltwater intrusion in a tidal freshwater wetland to predict how chronic (Press) and acute (Pulse) salinization will affect this and other tidal freshwater ecosystems. In order to characterize groundwater salinity, temperature, and plot flooding following experimental manipulation, unvented water pressure, temperature and conductivity were continuously measured in a PVC groundwater well installed at the SALTEx site. Measurements were made at the bottom of the well using a submerged Schlumberger CTD-Diver logger every 15 minutes from 30-May-2014 to 14-Feb-2018. In February 2016 a second CTD-Diver was deployed near the top of the well. Data were downloaded from the loggers using Diver Office communication software, then imported into MATLAB for post-processing, quality control and documentation. Raw, unvented pressure readings were corrected for atmospheric pressure and sensor height from the bottom of the well to generate corrected pressure readings, then water level, salinity and density were calculated from the measured variables using UNESCO algorithms. These data were collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER SALTEx project (http://gce-lter.marsci.uga.edu/public/app/send_project_eml.asp?id=73), and will be updated annually.

AGW03 Konza Prairie Long-term high frequency groundwater level and temperature from wells on N04d

The objectives of this project are to quantify the seasonably variable timing among meteoric precipitation, groundwater recharge, and groundwater temperature. Hypotheses are: 1. Because of the karst-like characteristics of the aquifers in N04d (and by extension, the entire region), recharge will be rapid during moderately large precipitation events where fractures are enlarged by dissolution and therefore highly conductive, except during the most active part of the growing season. 2. The recharge efficiency of the aquifers will be spatially variable, with highest hydraulic conductivity (because of solution enlargement of fractures) near the riparian zone. 3. Groundwater temperature will vary continuously over the year and also demonstrate abrupt changes after recharge-effective precipitation events when the precipitation temperature is different from the groundwater temperature. Because the aquifers are merokarst and recharge is rapid, data are recorded at high frequency (5 minute intervals).

Energy Harvesting Using a Nonlinear Resonator with Asymmetric Potential Wells

<p><strong>This repository contains</strong> the results of numerical simulations of a nonlinear bistable system for harvesting energy from ambient vibrating mechanical sources. Detailed model tests were carried out on an inertial energy harvesting system consisting of a piezoelectric beam with additional springs attached. The mathematical model was derived using the bond graph approach. Depending on the spring selection, the shape of the bistable potential wells was modified including the removal of wells&rsquo; degeneration. Consequently, the broken mirror symmetry between the potential wells led to additional solutions with corresponding voltage responses. The probability of occurrence for different high voltage/large orbit solutions with changes in potential symmetry was investigated. In particular, the periodicity of different solutions with respect to the harmonic excitation period were studied and compared in terms of the voltage output. The results showed that a large orbit period-6 subharmonic solution could be stabilized while some higher subharmonic solutions disappeared with the increasing asymmetry of potential wells. Changes in frequency ranges were also observed for chaotic solutions.</p>

<p>Video evidence of a Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem (VME) was collected via submarine deployed by the tourist super-yacht MY Scenic Eclipse flagged with Malta. The dive was conducted on the 29th November 2019 within Subarea 48.1. The video of this resource supplements the dataset &quot;Evidence of a Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem documented via tourist submarine off Cape Well-Met, Vega Island, Eastern Antarctic Peninsula (Subarea 48.1) - data&#39;&#39; available at <a href="https://ipt.biodiversity.aq/resource?r=cape-well-met_2019">https://ipt.biodiversity.aq/resource?r=cape-well-met_2019</a>.</p> <p>Method step description:</p> <ol> <li> <p>Video evidence of a Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem (VME) was collected via submarine deployed by the tourist super-yacht MY Scenic Eclipse flagged with Malta. Recordings begin at the greatest depth and continue as the submarine travels up the wall. Footage was taken with a GoPro Hero 7 Black mounted in the pilot window of a U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7-300<a href="https://www.uboatworx.com/model/cruisesub"> (https://www.uboatworx.com/model/cruisesub).</a> Four submarine dives were filmed.</p> </li> <li> <p>Prior to footage clean-up it was decided that the longest resulting video would be the one that would be analysed. Footage of each of these dives were provided in multiple files.</p> </li> <li> <p>Final Cut Pro X was first used to join the files into one video file per dive.</p> </li> <li> <p>The videos were then cropped to remove the edge of the pilot&rsquo;s window frame and to adjust the colour balance.</p> </li> <li> <p>Clean-up then followed the same methodology as was used for analyzing the submarine footage for the successful nomination of four VMEs in WG-EMM-18/35 to remove unusable sequences. For the Cape Well-Met footage that meant the removal of any sequences where the submarine was too far from the wall, where the visibility was poor and when the submarine was paused.</p> </li> <li> <p>Footage from Dive C was the longest resulting video after the completion of this clean-up procedure, thus it became the footage that was analysed.</p> </li> </ol> <p>This project is funded by The Soap and The Sea, a Swiss organic and ocean-friendly soap enterprise that donates half of its profits to Ocean Conservation initiatives.</p>

<p><strong>COVID-19 German Student Well-being Study (C19 GSWS)</strong></p> <p>Following the COVID-19 International Student Well-being Study (C19 ISWS; survey phase: May 13<sup>th</sup>, 2020 to May 29<sup>th</sup>, 2020 in 27 European countries coordinated by the University of Antwerp), well-being of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic continued to be &nbsp;the focus of the collaborative COVID-19 German Student Well-being Study (C19 GSWS) which was conducted at five universities in Germany.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The five German universities taking part in the study were the Charit&eacute; &ndash; Universit&auml;tsmedizin Berlin (PI: Prof. Christiane Stock), the University of Bremen (PI: Dr. Heide Busse), Heinrich-Heine-University Duesseldorf (PI: Prof. Claudia Pischke), University of Siegen (PI: Prof. Claus Wendt) and Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (PI: Prof. Rafael Mikolajczyk).</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The following research questions were addressed:</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>- How did university students&#39; (physical and socioeconomic) living conditions and academic workload change during the COVID-19 pandemic?</p> <p>- How were living and study conditions associated with mental health outcomes among university students during the COVID-19 pandemic?</p> <p>- How were living conditions and academic workload associated with health behaviours (e.g., substance use) among university students during the pandemic?</p> <p>- Which attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccination and determinants of vaccination behavior were prevalent r among university students?</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>To answer the research questions, an online survey among university students was conducted at all participating universities from October 27<sup>th</sup>, 2021 to November 14<sup>th</sup>, 2021. Data from “A Mixed Method Approach to Understanding the Public Health Impact of a School-Based Citizen Science Program to Reduce Arsenic in Private Well Water”

Objectives We have approached the problem of low well water testing rates in Maine and New Hampshire communities by developing the All About Arsenic (AAA) project, which engages secondary school teachers and students as citizen scientists in collecting well water samples for analysis of arsenic and other toxic metals and supports their outreach efforts to their communities. Methods We assessed this project’s public health impact by analyzing student data relative to existing well water quality datasets in both states. In addition, we surveyed private well owners who contributed well water samples to the project to determine the actions taken to mitigate arsenic in well water. Fish and crayfish density and count data for Peeks Creek, Macon County, NC, USA 2005-2014, 2019, and 2022 following a catastrophic debris flow, as well as six reference streams

We followed the process of recovery of the fish and crayfish assemblage in Peeks Creek, a high-gradient second order stream in the Little Tennessee River watershed of North Carolina, after a debris flow devastated the channel and its riparian zone. After 15 years, the fish assemblage had recovered, and the channel and riparian zone had stabilized. Of the three major components of the fish assemblage, Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum)), a strong swimmer, reappeared in year 1. Longnose Dace (Rhinichthys cataractae (Valenciennes in Cuvier and Valenciennes)) reappeared in year 3. Mottled Sculpin (Cottus bairdii Girard), a weak swimmer, did not become established until year 6 and only resumed expected abundance in year 9. Appalachian Brook Crayfish (Cambarus bartonii cavatus Hay) numbers recovered quickly, though only one individual was found the year following the debris flow. Unassisted natural recovery occurred after a costly engineered restoration project had been rejected and arguably represents the preferable solution. However, recovery of the fish assemblage may not have been achieved if the stream flowed directly into an impoundment or low gradient river that lacked the source of species for recolonization, or if the stream had been located above a barrier to upstream movement.

HN_i_1 is of Holocene origin and is located adjacent to Blackbeard Island to the north of Sapelo Island, Georgia. PC_i_29 is also of Holocene origin and is located adjacent to the south end of Sapelo Island. These hammocks are of similar size, with similar vegetation zones in the high marsh environment. Groundwater well transects were established that run from the upland, through the marsh, and up and over the upland area of each hammock. Two permanent plots were established at each well in order to characterize the plant and invertebrate diversity and abundance by surveying plots once a year. This data set includes the results of July 2008 monitoring studies.
