White Pine Blister Rust (WPBR) Plot Data from the Western United States

As one of North America’s most damaging tree diseases, white pine blister rust (WPBR) is expected to continue to affect high-elevation five-needle (High-5) pine species in the near future. In order to better understand and estimate the risk it poses to white pines, data was compiled from independent studies across the Western U.S. from 1983-2025. This WPBR disease occurrence data includes nearly 6700 points, which were classified into two epidemic types: established or invading, based on the disease intensity value and the amount of time the disease had been present in the area.

A 30-year high resolution simulation of the ~1980-2010 climate over the Interior Western United States

<p>A high-resolution (4 km) regional climate simulation is conducted in the Interior Western United States (IWUS) using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The IWUS simulation is convection permitting and uses the NoahMP land surface model. The model integration is conducted over a 30-year period from 1 October 1981 through 30 September 2011.</p> <p>This repository contains a 30-year gridded dataset of daily precipitation,&nbsp;and daily minimum and maximum surface (2 m) temperature from the IWUS simulation.&nbsp;Anyone interested in the full dataset of the IWUS&nbsp;simulation is encouraged to contact the lead author at&nbsp;yongganga.wang@gmail.com.</p>

Data to explore circular manureshed management in beef supply chains of the United States and western Canada

Circular management of beef supply chains holds great promise for improving sustainability from grazing agroecosystem to dinner plate. In the United States and Canada, one approach to circularity entails transporting manure nutrients from cattle produced in feedlots back to the grazing agroecosystems where they originated to enrich haylands for further grazing cattle production. We provide data to assess this strategy centered around three grazing agroecosystems: Florida, New Mexico, and the provincial assemblage of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia. We describe four datasets that can be used to estimate the potential nutrient utilization of hay fed to grazing cattle in the three grazing agroecosystems and the magnitudes of feedlot manure nutrients available for transport back to them. We found that although biogeography and management differ among the three grazing agroecosystems, the hay allocated for grazing cattle represented approximately 65% of the total harvested hay produced per agroecosystem after accounting for harvest losses, and that on average all three areas exported about 450,000 cattle annually for feedlot, pasture, and slaughter to states across the US. Although we highlight only three grazingland settings, our approach relies on methods that could ultimately be scaled nationally and internationally, with applicability to other animal industries for which circular management is an aspiration for sustainability outcomes.

A collection of fully-annotated soundscape recordings from the Western United States

<p>This collection contains 33 hour-long soundscape recordings, which have been annotated with 20,147 bounding box labels for 56 different bird species from the Western United States. The data were recorded in 2018 in the Sierra Nevada, California, USA. This collection has partially been featured as test data in the 2021 BirdCLEF competition and can primarily be used for training and evaluation of machine learning algorithms.</p> <p><strong>Data collection</strong></p> <p>Measuring the effects of forest management activities in the Sierra Nevada, California, USA can reveal a potential correlation with avian population density and diversity. For this dataset, passive acoustic surveys were conducted in the Lassen and Plumas National Forests in May-August 2018. Survey grid cells (4 km<sup>2</sup>) were randomly selected from a 6,000-km<sup>2</sup> area, and SWIFT recording units were deployed at locations conducive to sound propagation (e.g., ridges rather than gullies) within those cells. The sensitivity of the used microphones was -44 (+/-3) dB re 1 V/Pa. The microphone&#39;s frequency response was not measured, but is assumed to be flat (+/- 2 dB) in the frequency range 100 Hz to 7.5 kHz. The analog signal was amplified by 38 dB and digitized (16-bit resolution) using an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a clipping level of -/+ 0.9 V. Recording units recorded continuously 17:00 - 23:59, 0:00 - 10:00, one-hour files were stored as uncompressed WAVE sampled at 32 kHz and later converted to FLAC. Parts of this dataset have previously been used in the 2021 BirdCLEF competition.</p> <p><strong>Sampling and annotation protocol</strong></p> <p>We subsampled data for this collection by selecting locations that spanned the full elevational and latitudinal gradients of our study area (~840 &ndash; 1700 m asl and 39.41 &ndash; 40.71&deg;N), and thus represent a broad range of plant communities. A single annotator boxed every bird call he could recognize, ignoring those that are too faint or unidentifiable. Raven Pro software was used to annotate the data. Provided labels contain full bird calls that are boxed in time and frequency. The annotator was allowed to combine multiple consecutive calls of one species into one bounding box label if pauses between calls were shorter than five seconds. We use eBird species codes as labels, following the 2021 eBird taxonomy (Clements list).</p> <p><strong>Files in this collection</strong></p> <p>Audio recordings can be accessed by downloading and extracting the &ldquo;soundscape_data.zip&rdquo; file. Soundscape recording filenames contain a sequential file ID, recording date and timestamp in PDT. As an example, the file &ldquo;SNE_001_20180509_050002.flac&rdquo; has sequential ID 001 and was recorded on May 9th 2018 at 05:00:02 PDT. Ground truth annotations are listed in &ldquo;annotations.csv&rdquo; where each line specifies the corresponding filename, start and end time in seconds, low and high frequency in Hertz and an eBird species code. These species codes can be assigned to scientific and common name of a species with the &ldquo;species.csv&rdquo; file. The approximate recording location with longitude and latitude can be found in the &ldquo;recording_location.txt&rdquo; file.</p> <p><strong>Acknowledgements&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>The collection and annotation of this dataset was funded by the U.S. Forest Service Region 5 and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.</p>

Data for "Climate change is shifting and narrowing prescribed fire windows in the Western United States"

<p><strong>The data archived here represent two types of information used in the publication &ldquo;Climate change is shifting and narrowing prescribed fire windows in the Western United States&rdquo;&nbsp;by Swain et al. 2023:</strong></p> <p>1) The meteorological and vegetation dryness/fuel moisture data (as described within the file) extracted from prescribed fire burn plans around the Western United States (drawn from entities such as the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. National Park Service, and The Nature Conservancy) between 2002 and 2022. This data is provided in tabular form, both as an .xlsx file and a .csv file for the convenience of the user. In addition to the specific values from each burn plan, summaries of median values for forested and non-forested landscapes are provided as well.</p> <p>2) The number of days on which environmental conditions (i.e., weather and vegetation fuel moistures) are acceptable for prescribed fire according to the composite metric described in Swain et al. 2023 (known as &ldquo;RxDays&rdquo;). Underlying RxDay definitions are different for forest and non-forested landscapes. This data is provided in geospatially explicit (gridded) form as NetCDF files, which are a self-describing file format. Each file is provided as a single 3-dimensional hypercube (i.e., dimensions of time, latitude, and longitude, respectively; units and details described within the file) corresponding to the number of RxDays per calendar month.</p> <p>One file is provided for each climate model iteration (as identified in each filename); these represent projected RxDays at monthly scale between 1981 and 2060 using an RCP 4.5 climate forcing trajectory. An additional file (rx_gridMET.nc) is provided that represents the same values from an atmospheric reanalysis dataset, which represents a best estimate of observed RxDay values (1981-2020).</p>

Fire history database of the western United States, 1994

To create a database of existing published and unpublished tree-ring reconstructions of fire regimes in forested areas, before circa 1900, west of 100 W longitude in the continental United States, exclusive of Alaska. The studies included in the database are restricted to tree-ring reconstructions of fire history and the information extracted includes citations to the data sources, site information, estimated fire regimes, and information on individual fire events (when readily available). Fire regimes vary greatly across short distances in the western United States, so that a reconstruction of fire history over a small area may not represent the history of a larger area. Therefore, we extracted information on the size of the study area and the amount of fire evidence (number of trees scarred and/or number of tree origin dates) used in computing the fire regimes to allow the user to gauge the applicability of each reconstruction to larger areas.

Dimensions, cover, volumes, mass and nutrient stores of Coarse Woody Debris (bark and wood from logs, snags, and stumps) from forests plots in the western United States and Mexico, 1977 to 2005

These data provide an inventory of the mass and nutrients stored within various forest types by coarse woody debris (CWD). CWD inventoried includes standing dead trees (greater than 10 cm diameter at breast height) and dead and downed wood (greater than 10 cm large end and >1 long). The majority of measurements are from permanent sample plots associated with the Andrews LTER permanent sample plots network. This includes clusters of plots at and near the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest (OR), Cascade Head Experimental Forest (OR), Mount Rainier National Park (WA), Olympic National Park (WA), and Fraser Experimental Forest (CO). There are also data from plots in the Yucatan in Mexico; however, the live tree data for these plots is not available. The species of CWD inventoried are primarily those found in the Pacific Northwest; the dominants being Douglas-fir, western hemlock, mountain hemlock, western redcedar, Pacific silver fir, noblel fir, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, sitka spruce, and Englemann spruce. The majority of measurements were made in the 1975 to 1995 period; however plots are periodically remeasured and the intent to eventually remeasure all the plots except those in Mexico. In each plot measurements of log and snag dimensions (length and diameters), as well as decay class and species were recorded in the stands (td01201 file). These dimension data are combined with data on density and nutrient content for each species and decay class (td01202 file) and plot area and slope (td01203 file) to calculate CWD volume, cover, biomass and nutrient storage (td01204 file). When data on density and nutrient concentrations is not known, a list of substitutions is used (td01206). The adjust tree diameters if measurements are taken at the base of the dead tree, taper regressions are used (td01205).
