Dynamics of large wood in streams: Tagged log inventory, Mack Creek, Andrews Experimental Forest, 1985 to 2008

Although many studies have identified the characteristics of wood stored in streams, few have attempted to measure the long-term dynamics of large wood. From 1982-1985, we developed a long-term study of input, storage, decomposition, and redistribution of large wood in Mack Creek. Each year from 1985 to the present, we have surveyed a 1.1 km section of this stream. This annual survey has allowed us to quantify the standing stocks and characteristics of large wood within the stream and floodplain of an old-growth forest and an older (ca. 1963) clear-cut. In addition, these data allow us to measure rates of input, fragmentation and movement.

Data from: Interactions of wood accumulations, channel dynamics, and geomorphic heterogeneity within a river corridor

<p>Natural rivers are inherently dynamic. Spatial and temporal variations in water, sediment, and wood fluxes both cause and respond to an increase in geomorphic heterogeneity within the river corridor. We analyze 16 two-kilometer river corridor segments of the Swan River in Montana, USA to examine relationships between wood accumulations (wood accumulation distribution density, count, and persistence), channel dynamism (total sinuosity and average channel migration), and geomorphic heterogeneity (density, aggregation, interspersion, and evenness of patches in the river corridor). We hypothesize that i) more dynamic river segments correlate with a greater presence, persistence, and distribution of wood accumulations; ii) years with higher peak discharge correspond with greater channel dynamism and wood accumulations; and iii) all river corridor variables analyzed play a role in explaining river corridor spatial heterogeneity. Our results suggest that decadal-scale channel dynamism, as reflected in total sinuosity, corresponds to greater numbers of wood accumulations per surface area and greater persistence of these wood accumulations through time. Second, higher peak discharges correspond to greater values of wood distribution density, but not to greater channel dynamism. Third, persistent values of geomorphic heterogeneity, as reflected in the heterogeneity metrics of aggregation, interspersion, patch density, and evenness, are explained by potential predictor variables analyzed here. Our results reflect the complex interactions of water, sediment, and large wood in river corridors; the difficulties of interpreting causal relationships among these variables through time; and the importance of spatial and temporal analyses of past and present river processes to understand future river conditions</p>

Dynamics of Large Wood in a stream restoration in Michigan, USA 2004-2018

Large wood (LW) additions are commonly used to restore degraded streams, particularly in regenerating forests that have low LW recruitment due to past logging. While the short-term effects of LW input on stream structure and function are well studied, the long-term dynamics of added wood are less documented. We assessed the long-term movement and condition of LW added to three small (mean discharge, 28-47 L sec-1) midwestern USA streams. In 2004, 25 aspen logs (2.5 m L x 0.5 m D) were added to 100-m treatment reaches of three replicate streams in northern Michigan, USA, that contained low prior LW abundance. We monitored log movement and evaluated factors contributing to that movement over 14 years. Across all three streams, 41 of the 75 added logs moved downstream, with a mean travel distance of 4.0 m (SD, 7.0 m; n=75). However, all logs still remained within their original reaches. Most log movements occurred within the first three years following placement and were associated with high flow events. Individual log mobility was related to position in the channel; logs that were at least 70% submerged, and near horizontal in inclination, accounted for 83% of the single movements ≥0.5 m. In addition, after 14 years 32% of logs became part of aggregations and 86% displayed substantial decay. Our study suggests that restoration efforts that add LW to small, groundwater-dominated streams can pose minimal risk to downstream reaches or human structures, and may provide sustained ecological benefits to the ecosystem.

Data from: Evolution of multiple sex-chromosomes associated with dynamic genome reshuffling in Leptidea wood-white butterflies

<p>Sex chromosome systems tend to be highly conserved and knowledge about their evolution typically comes from macroevolutionary inferences. Rapidly evolving complex sex chromosome systems represent a rare opportunity to study the mechanisms of sex chromosome evolution at unprecedented resolution. Three cryptic species of wood white butterflies – <i><span>Leptidea juvernica</span></i>, <i><span>L. sinapis</span></i>, and <i><span>L. reali</span></i> – have each a unique set of multiple sex chromosomes with 3–4 W and 3–4 Z chromosomes. Using a transcriptome-based microarray for comparative genomic hybridization (array-CGH) and a library of bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones, both developed in <i><span>L. juvernica</span></i>, we identified Z-linked <i><span>Leptidea</span></i> orthologs of <i><span>Bombyx mori</span></i> genes and mapped them by fluorescence <i><span>in situ</span></i> hybridization (FISH) with BAC probes on multiple Z chromosomes. In all three species, we determined synteny blocks of autosomal origin and reconstructed the evolution of multiple sex chromosomes. In addition, we identified W-homologs of Z-linked orthologs and characterized their molecular differentiation. Our results suggest that the multiple sex chromosome system evolved in a common ancestor of these three <i><span>Leptidea</span></i> species as a result of dynamic genome reshuffling through repeated rearrangements between the sex chromosomes and autosomes, including translocations and fissions. Thus, the sex chromosome turnover could not play a role in reproductive isolation between the <i><span>Leptidea </span></i>species studied. However, we suggest that subsequent species-specific rearrangements of multiple sex chromosomes, along with different rates of neo-W chromosome degeneration and significantly increased number of Z-linked genes could accelerate the accumulation of genetic incompatibilities between populations and promote their divergence resulting in speciation.</p>

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>Mast seeding is the episodic, massive production of plant seeds synchronized over large areas. The resulting superabundance of seeds represents a resource pulse that can profoundly affect animal populations across trophic levels. Following years of high seed production, abundances of both seed consumers and their predators increase. Higher predator abundance leads to increased predation pressure across the trophic web, impacting non-seed consumers such as the wood warbler <i>Phylloscopus sibilatrix</i> through increased nest predation after tree mast years. Over the past 30 years, the frequency of tree seed masts has increased while wood warbler populations have declined in several regions of Europe. We hypothesised that increasing mast frequencies may have contributed to the observed population declines by creating suboptimal breeding conditions in years after masting. We measured reproductive output in four study areas in central Europe, which was between 0.61 and 1.24 fledglings lower in years following masting than non-masting. For each study area, we used matrix population models to predict population trends based on the estimated reproductive output and the local mast frequencies. We then compared the predicted with the observed population trends to assess if the frequency of mast years contributed to the population dynamics. In Wielkopolska National Park (PL) and Hessen (DE), masting occurred on average only every 4 years and populations were stable or nearly so, whereas in Jura (CH) and Białowieża National Park (PL), masting occurred every 2 and 2.5 years, respectively, and populations were declining. The simple matrix population models predicted the relative difference among local population trends over the past 10-20 years well, suggesting that the masting frequency may partly explain regional variation in population trends. Simulations suggest that further increases in mast frequency will lead to further declines in wood warbler populations. We show that changes in a natural process, such as mast seeding, may contribute to the declines of animal populations through cascading effects.</p>

The &quot;Figures&quot; folder contains MS excel files with observed data (streamflows, groundwater heads, stream, streambed and groundwater temperatures etc) and simulation results to recreate the figures in the WRR paper. Dynamics of wood recruitment in streams of the northeastern US

A space-for-time analysis was used to quantify large wood loading to 28 streams in the northeastern US with a range of in-stream and riparian forest characteristics in order to better inform stream restoration and stream management efforts. We documented the current volume and frequency of occurrence of large wood in streams with riparian forests varying in their stage of stand development as well as stream size and gradient. This data set includes wood, stream and riparian forest metrics collected between 2003 and 2007. Linear models relating stream wood characteristics to stream geomorphic and forest characteristics were compared and results can be found in: Warren, D. R., C. E. Kraft, W. S. Keeton, J. S.
