CoHERE Work Package 5 Survey of free time activities amongst Latvian schoolchildren

The quantitative survey «Youth and leisure time activities, informal education and cultural heritage» was carried out as part of Work Package 5 (Education, heritage and identities) of 'Critical Heritages: Performing and presenting identities in Europe' (https://research.ncl.ac.uk/cohere/researchstrands/). This Work Package develops best practices in the production and transmission of European heritages and identities within two sectors that face challenges in an age of immigration and globalization, namely education and cultural heritage production. It explores how European identity is shaped through formal and informal learning situations both in and outside the classroom with the purpose of enhancing school curricula and informal learning at heritage sites by integrating innovative technologies and including multicultural perspectives.

The target group: youth (age 16 to 19) from secondary schools and professional education schools in Latvia

Sample size: 1047. Time period: December 2017 – March 2018.

Method: a self-administered questionnaire.

The aim of the survey is to examine how cultural heritage shape different identities in Europe, representing ideas of place, history, traditions and sense of belonging.

Tasks of the survey:
1) to get information about leisure time activities of the youth and their participation in different informal education activities;
2) to examine youth opinion about the role of cultural heritage and their involvement in safeguarding cultural heritage;
3) to analyse the role of cultural heritage in formation of local, national and European identities of the young people.

Age-specific activation patterns and inter-subject similarity during verbal working-memory maintenance and Cognitive Reserve

Cognitive Reserve, according to a recent consensus definition of the NIH-funded Reserve and Resilience collaboratory (https://reserveandresilience.com/), is constituted by any mechanism contributing to cognitive performance beyond, or interacting with, brain structure in the widest sense. To identity multivariate activation patterns fulfilling this postulate, we investigated a verbal Sternberg fMRI task and imaged 181 people with age coverage in the ranges 20-30 (44 participants) and 55-70 (137 participants). Beyond task performance, participants were characterized in terms of demographics, and neuropsychological assessments of vocabulary, episodic memory, perceptual speed, and abstract fluid reasoning. Participants studied an array of either 1, 3, or 6 upper-case letters for 3 seconds (=encoding phase), then a blank fixation screen was presented for 7 seconds (=maintenance phase), to be probed with a lower-case letter to which they responded with a differential button press whether the letter was part of the studied array or not (=retrieval phase). We focused on identifying maintenance-related activation patterns showing memory-load increases in pattern score on an individual-participant level for both age groups. We found such a pattern that increased with memory load for all but one person in the young participants (p<0.001), and such a pattern for all participants in the older group (p<0.001). Both patterns showed broad topographic similarities; however, relationships to task performance and neuropsychological characteristics were markedly different and point to individual differences in Cognitive Reserve. Beyond the derivation of group-level activation patterns, we also investigated the inter-subject spatial similarity of individual working-memory rehearsal patterns in the older participants' group as a function of neuropsychological and task performance, education and mean cortical thickness. Higher task accuracy and neuropsychological function was reliably associated with higher inter-subject similarity of individual-level activation patterns in older participants.

Long-term health-related quality of life, healthcare utilisation and back-to-work activities in Intensive Care Unit survivors: prospective confirmatory study from the Frisian Aftercare Cohort

More substantial information on recovery after Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission is urgently needed. In a previous retrospective study, the proportion of non-recovery patients was 44%. The aim of this prospective follow-up study was to evaluate changes Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in the first year after ICU-admission. Long-stay adult ICU-patients (≥ 48 hours) were included. HRQoL was evaluated with the Dutch translation of the RAND-36 item Health Survey (RAND-36) at baseline via proxy measurement, and at three, six, and twelve months after ICU admission. Subsequently, the relation between physical functioning, healthcare utilisation, and work activities was explored.
