2003 GPS shorelines for Hog, Wreck, and Metompkin Islands, VA

This dataset was collected by Curtis Smith during the summer of 2003 as a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) participant. It consists of Global Positioning System (GPS) lines collected by walking high-tide and vegetation (Hog Island only) lines using a Trimble Geoexplorer XT GPS unit. The resulting data was processed with GPS Pathfinder Office using differential correction. All data are in the UTM (zone 18) and the WGS-84 projection was used throughout. During the repeated surveys of Hog, Curtis was developing methodologies and conventions for surveying sometimes confusing high-tide lines. Each shapefile name contains the island and the date of the survey within 2003 in the form Rmmdd where mm is the month and dd is the day. For example Hog_R0717_05A.shp would be Hog Island, VA on July 17, 2003. The raw GPS position files are also included. These proprietary (.SSF) files require the Trimble Pathfinder Office software to be interpreted. Â Individual shapefiles for each survey day were later (2013) combined into a single shapefile with the island and date identified as attributes. Â

Historical shorelines on Wreck Island of the Virginia Coast Reserve 1888-2003

This dataset consists of two components. An ArcGIS "shapefile" containing digitized boundary lines for the shoreline of Wreck Island for the years 1888 (partial), 1911 (partial), 1942, 1959, 1980 obtained from a NOAA coastal change map (1:24,000), 1994 (from USGS orthophotos) and October 2003 (after hurricane Isabel, from ETM+ Landsat 7 image). A mosaic of the 1994 orthophotos is also included as a GeoTIFF formated image. All data is in UTM zone 18N and uses the NAD83 datum.

Shoals Club Wreck

On 2/16/2022, Underwater Archaeology Branch (UAB) staff visited Bald Head Island to investigate a wooden wreck that had eroded out of the dune in front of the Shoals Club. The wreck fragment measured about 65 ft in length by 11 ft max width and was positioned with the long axis running perpendicular to the dune in a N/S orientation. It was not clear what type of vessel the irregularly shaped wreckage originally was. It exhibited a heavily built keelson of four 12-inch squared timbers and sister of two similar squared timbers, all fastened together by massive 1.5-inch iron drift pins with washers under the mushroomed head. This structure was fastened to athwartship running floors beneath the keelson structure. These were squarely cut on the west side of the "keelson structure" (KS) about 4' at the extreme south end of the vessel running to flush at the extreme north end. This model was constructed by David Cranford and Stephen Atkinson with 446 photos using Agisoft Metashape software. (Credit: NCDNCR/OSA) Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Custom House Lighter Wreck

Located under a jetty next to Custom House stairs, London. "Custom House no. 2 (site code ref. FCYa106) was a small punt-ended lighter some 5.5m long and 1.8m in the beam, designed with rowlocks but its construction included plywood, perhaps evidence of a later repair." Uelvesbüll wreck Husum, Germany

This wreck was found in 1994 during construction work in the Uelvesbüller Koog, Nordfriesland, Schleswig Holstein, North Germany. It is a flat-bottomed Dutch cargo vessel, which could also sail in shallow waters. The dendrochronological examination of the oak wood used in the construction revealed that the keel was laid around 1600. About twenty years later there was an accident off the Adolfskoog: The vessel sank in a tidal channel. After salvage and a two-year stabilisation phase in a sugar solution, the wreck has been on display in the Nordfriesland Maritime Museum since April 1998. https://www.schiffahrtsmuseum-nf.de/index.php?id=uelvesbueller_wrack. The model has been created during a short visit to the museum in August 2022. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Mukran wreck

The Mukran wreck, sunk off the Isle of Rügen, Germany. From the 1st of June until the 22nd of June 2016, students of the Maritime Programme of the University of Southern Denmark recorded and documented this 16th century shipwreck. This photogrammetry model was used to make a site plan of the wreck. The model was made in Agisoft Photoscan using 3507 photos, taken from GoPro footage. The original model has a dense point cloud of 82 million points and 4 million faces. The model was scaled down to 600k faces so it could be uploaded to Sketchfab. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Anémone wreck, Guadeloupe, 2018

Anémone wreck, excavation by ASSOCIATION AAPA UNIVERSITÉ DES ANTILLES AIHP GEODE EA 927 Director Jean-Sébastien Guibert Preliminary research carried out in July 2015 demonstrated the interest of the site of the Passe de la Baleine located in the Bay of Saintes, Terre-de-Haut, Guadeloupe, and the very likely identification of the remains of the wreck as those of the Anemone a schooner of the Royal Navy lost during the hurricane of September 7 to 8, 1824. Shrimp Boat Wreck, Florida East Coast

Little remains of the early 20th century shrimp boat wreck. Intermittently exposed, only the remains of the stern were visible when we visited the site recently. Beach wrecks have several environmental issues to contend with that tend to rapidly degrade the resource. By modeling the remains we are helping to preserve this quickly vanishing resource for future researchers. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
