Zooplankton and macroinvertebrate size spectra, biomass, and community composition; and harvest of bigmouth buffalo and common carp in six shallow lakes in Iowa, USA (2018-2020)
This data product contains biological data collected within six shallow lakes in Iowa, USA between 2018 - 2020, where four lakes were undergoing targeted removals of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and bigmouth buffalo (Ictiobus cyprinellus). Parts of these data were a portion of Albright et al. 2022 (https://doi.org/10.6073/pasta/1d3797fd573208bae6f78963479445a0), however the data herein include additional survey data from the Ambient Lake Monitoring network instituted through Iowa State University and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (https://www.iowadnr.gov/environmental-protection/water-quality/water-monitoring/ambient-lake-monitoring#ambient-lake-monitoring-sampling-plan). Data are packaged and formatted specifically for size spectra analysis and compositional analysis.
Cross Lake Comparison at North Temperate Lakes LTER - Zooplankton Biomass Study 2006
This project investigates why zooplankton size, but not biomass, has been found to influence the phosphorus (TP) - chlorophyll a (chl a) relationship (Pace 1984, Carpenter et al. 1991, Carpenter et al. 2001).
Summer water chemistry, high frequency sensors, zooplankton and benthic macroinvertebrate community composition, periphyton, fish, and macrophyte biomass, along with lake metabolism and greenhouse gas dynamics in six experimental ponds in central Iowa, USA (2020)
This data product contains physical, chemical, and biological data ranging from the minute to daily to weekly scale in six artificial ponds (400 square meter surface area, 2m depth) in central Iowa (USA) 2020. Ponds were paired into three sets of treatment and reference with treatment ponds receiving two nutrient pulses designed to increase ambient phosphorus concentrations ~ 3 - 5%. Nitrogen and phosphorus were added as NH4NO3 and H3PO4, respectively, at a 24:1 molar ratio. The first nutrient pulse occurred on Julian day of year (DOY) 176 corresponding to a 3% increase and the second nutrient pulse occurred on DOY 211 to a 5% increase. Each treatment-reference set had a different food web structure established ranging between low, intermediate, and high complexity based on trophic connectivity and food chain length. Added to this data package is a document titled "2020 Iowa State University Horticultural Farm Experimental Ponds Nutrient Addition Experiment". For experimental set up, context, and a summary table of the data tables archived herein with available variables please review this document. It is added to aid in successful interpretation and to increase ease-of-use. Please email Tyler Butts (tyler.james.butts@gmail.com) for any and all questions regarding context or use of this dataset!

Summer water chemistry, phytoplankton and zooplankton community composition, size structure, and biomass in a shallow, hypereutrophic reservoir in southwestern Iowa, USA (2019).
This data product contains data for Green Valley Lake, a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa (USA) from the summer of 2019. We sampled and quantified zooplankton, phytoplankton, and nutrient concentrations (total N, total P, soluble reactive P, nitrate) in the lake weekly with the primary aim of assessing consumer nutrient cycling, specifically zooplankton nutrient cycling, in a hypereutrophic reservoir. Weekly plankton sampling included quantifying zooplankton and phytoplankton biomass, community composition, and size structure. Phytoplankton size was measured as the greatest axial linear distance which would be approached by a zooplankton grazer. Allometric equations from the literature were applied to the zooplankton size measurements to estimate zooplankton community excretion of N and P. We found that the estimated contribution of zooplankton excretion to the dissolved P pool was substantial in the spring. Further, we found evidence that zooplankton affected phytoplankton size distributions through selective grazing of smaller phytoplankton cells likely affecting nutrient uptake and storage by phytoplankton.

Depth profiles of water column dissolved methane, density and biomass of zooplankton (specifically, Chaoborus spp.), and measurements of methane extracted from Chaoborus spp. during two sampling campaigns in 2016
Depth profiles of water column dissolved methane (CH4), density and biomass of zooplankton (specifically, Chaoborus spp.), and measurements of methane extracted from Chaoborus spp. were collected from Beaverdam Reservoir, Vinton, VA, USA during two, 24-hr intensive sampling campaigns in fall 2016 (3-4 August and 16-17 September). The sampling campaign was designed to test the hypothesis that Chaoborus spp. can transport CH4 from the hypolimnion to the epilimnion of lakes and reservoirs as they migrate to the surface waters from the benthos at night in search of zooplankton prey, and results of the project are published in Carey et al. 2018. During both sampling events, depth profiles of water column methane and Chaoborus spp. density were collected at noon, dusk, midnight, 2 a.m., dawn, and noon the following day at a 1 m resolution. In addition, during the September sampling event depth profiles were collected 1 hour prior to and after dusk. Methane gas was extracted from live Chaoborus individuals at every depth and time point immediately after collection via gentle centrifugation in distilled water following McGinnis et al. 2017. The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from California Current Ecosystem (CCE) contains biomass of zooplankton measurements in Log10(millilitersPerSquareMeter) units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.
Zooplankton paired night and day density and biomass estimates, worldwide literature survey, 1900 - 2016
Zooplankton paired night and day density and biomass full water column estimates were derived from an extensive literature review to assess night and day differences in zooplankton population estimates. Data were collected from 48 published studies and 60 lakes and reservoirs for a total of 870 paired day-night zooplankton observations. Data were only included in analyses if samples were collected at least every 2 m from the surface to greater or equal to 80% of the station depth.
Numerical and mass concentrations of microplastic debris collected by manta net; Numerical concentrations of Halobates sericeus adults/juveniles and eggs; zooplankton biomass concentration. Various cruises from 1972 - 2010 (completed).
Microplastic, Halobates, and zooplankton were collected using a standard manta net tow. Each sample was sorted at 6-12x magnification under a Wild M-5 dissecting microscope, and plastic particles and H. sericeus removed for further analysis. Plastic particles were soaked in deionized water to remove salts, dried at 60°C, and stored in a desiccator. Dry mass was measured on an analytical balance. Particles were then digitally imaged with a Zooscan digital scanner (Gorsky et al. 2010). The total number of particles was measured using NIH ImageJ-based tools in the Zooprocess software, calibrated against manual measurements (Gilfillan et al. 2009, Gorsky et al. 2010). H. sericeus samples were enumerated and classified into 5 categories: juvenile, adult male, adult female, newly molted, and molted exoskeletons. H. sericeus eggs, both those attached to plastic and those that had become detached during the collection process, were also enumerated. Dry mass of zooplankton was obtained from preserved manta tow samples. After fixation in 1.8% formaldehyde for 24 months, samples were split in a Folsom splitter, filtered onto 202 µm Nitex mesh disks and rinsed with isotonic ammonium formate. Filters were dried for 24 hours at 60°C and placed in a vacuum dessicator until weighing. Filters were weighed to the nearest 0.0001 gram on the same analytical balance as the plastic samples. A 20% correction factor was applied in order to compensate for the biomass lost by preservation.
