Wealth, water and wildlife: landscape aridity intensifies the urban Luxury Effect - data used in meta-analysis

<p>The available Excel file contains all data used in the meta-analysis to analyse the Luxury Effect (i.e. the relationship between urban biodiversity and socioeconomic status) and its moderators (wealth status, species provenance and precipitation). Each column in the data set (tab &lsquo;Data&rsquo;) is defined as follows:</p> <p><strong>Location</strong>:&nbsp; Location (e.g. city) where a given study took place. If more than one geographical location was considered, they are detailed in the column &#39;Sample&#39;</p> <p><strong>Sample:&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong>Any separate samples based either on location or temporal sampling period (e.g. geographical location, habitat types, different years) considered in a given paper.&nbsp; If the column is blank, only one location or period was considered.</p> <p><strong>Biodiversity measure:&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong>Defined into either diversity or abundance measures as defined in the text.</p> <p><strong>Response variable:&nbsp;</strong>The precise response variable analysed in the paper.</p> <p><strong>Socioeconomic variable:&nbsp;</strong>The socioeconomic variable analysed in the paper.</p> <p><strong>Provenance:&nbsp;</strong>Native or exotic species, where specified. &#39;All&#39; refers both to papers where it was explicitly stated that both native and exotic species were considered, and those where no information was given, but we assumed that native and exotic species had been considered.</p> <p><strong>Development status:&nbsp;</strong>Countries with developed economies (&#39;Rich&#39;) and countries with developing economies &#39;Poor&#39;) as defined in the text.</p> <p><strong>Gradient length:&nbsp;</strong>Studies including only urbanized areas (&#39;Short&#39;) and those also including rural sampling locations (&#39;Long&#39;).</p> <p><strong>Precipitation:&nbsp;</strong>in mm.</p> <p><strong>Pearson&#39;s r:&nbsp;</strong>Standardized values used in the meta-analysis.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Note the above information is also available in the Excel file in the &lsquo;Notes&rsquo; tab.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Data from: A global analysis of plant recovery performance from water stress

Plant post-drought recovery performance is essential to predict shifts in ecosystem dynamics and production during frequent climate change-driven drought events. Yet, it is not clear how post-drought recovery is related to evolutionary and geographic variations in plants. In this study, we generated a global data set of post-drought recovery performance in 140 plant species from published studies. We quantified the plant post-drought recovery performance by calculating a recovery index for multiple plant physiological and hydraulic parameters, including leaf water potential, net photosynthetic rate, leaf hydraulic conductance, and shoot biomass. The magnitude of recovery among four plant functional types (deciduous angiosperms, evergreen angiosperms, gymnosperms, and crops), two plant growth forms (shrubs and trees), two water management strategies (isohydric and anisohydric), four xylem porosity types (diffuse, ring, semi-ring, and tracheid), and four major biomes (dry sclerophyll forest, boreal forest, temperate forest, and tropical/subtropical forest) were compared. We found the inability to completely recover immediately after severe water stress is ubiquitous across all plant functional types and growth forms, while the rate and magnitude of post-drought recovery varied greatly across different plant taxonomic categories and geographic ranges. In general, plant hydraulic architecture, leaf anatomy and physiology affect plants' propensity towards recovery, and reflect evolutionary consequences of plant adaptation to their habitat. Due to the essential role of plant functional traits in regulating carbon storage in each biome, a better understanding plant post-drought recovery performance could improve our predictions on ecosystem productivity in a rapidly changing climate.

Data from: Bridging the Rubicon: phylogenetic analysis reveals repeated colonizations of marine and fresh waters by thalassiosiroid diatoms

Salinity imposes a significant barrier to he distribution of many organisms, including diatoms. Diatoms are ancestrally marine, and the number of times they have independently colonized fresh waters and the physiological adaptations that facilitated these transitions remain outstanding questions in diatom evolution. The colonization of fresh waters by diatoms has been compared to ''crossing the Rubicon,'' implying that successful colonization events are rare, irreversible, and lead to substantial species diversification. To test these hypotheses, we reconstructed the phylogeny of Thalassiosirales, a diatom lineage with high diversity in both marine and fresh waters. We collected ~5.3 kb of DNA sequence data from the nuclear (SSU and partial LSU rDNA) and chloroplast genomes (psbC and rbcL) and reconstructed the phylogeny using parsimony and Bayesian methods. Alternative topology tests strongly reject all previous colonization hypotheses, including monophyly of the predominantly freshwater Stephanodiscaceae. Results showed at least three independent colonizations of fresh waters, and whereas previous accounts of freshwater-to-marine transitions have been discounted, these results provide compelling evidence for as many as three independent re-colonizations of the marine habitat, two of which led to speciation events. This study adds valuable phylogenetic context to previous debate about the nature of the salinity barrier in diatoms and provides compelling evidence that, at least for Thalassiosirales, the salinity barrier might be less formidable than previously thought.
