Are Palmer's elm-leaf goldenrod and the smooth elm-leaf goldenrod real? The Angiosperms353 kit provides within-species signal in Solidago ulmifolia s.l.

<p><b><i>Abstract </i>— </b>The genus <i>Solidago</i> represents a taxonomically challenging group due to its sheer number of species, putative hybridization, polyploidy, and shallow genetic divergence among species. Here we use a dataset obtained exclusively from herbarium specimens to evaluate the status of <i>Solidago ulmifolia</i> var. <i>palmeri</i>, a morphologically subtle taxon potentially confined to Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Missouri. A multivariate analysis of both discrete and continuous morphological data revealed no clear distinction between <i>S. ulmifolia</i> var. <i>palmeri</i> and <i>Solidago ulmifolia</i> var. <i>ulmifolia</i>. <i>Solidago ulmifolia</i> var. <i>palmeri</i>'s status was also assessed with a phylogenomic and SNP clustering analysis of data generated with the "Angiosperms353" probe kit.  Neither analysis supported <i>Solidago ulmifolia</i> var. <i>palmeri</i> as a distinct taxon, and we suggest that this name should be discarded. The status of <i>Solidago delicatula</i> (formerly known as <i>Solidago ulmifolia</i> var. <i>microphylla</i>) was also assessed. Both morphological and phylogenetic analyses supported the species status of <i>S. delicatula</i> and we suggest maintaining this species at its current rank.  These results highlight the utility of the Angiosperms353 probe kit, both with herbarium tissue and at lower taxonomic levels. Indeed, this is the first study to utilize this kit to identify genetic groups within a species.</p>

Micro computed tomography images of capillary actions in smooth glass beads

<p>The present work investigates the effect of both surface roughness and particle morphology on the retention behaviour of granular materials. To study this, X-ray micro-computed tomography tests were performed on two types of spherical glass beads (i.e. smooth and rough) and two different sands (i.e. natural and roughened). Each sample was subjected to either drainage or soaking paths consisting in a multiphase &lsquo;static&rsquo; flow of potassium iodine (KI) brine (wetting phase) and dry air (non-wetting phase). Tomograms were taken at different saturation states ranging from fully brine saturated to air dry conditions.&nbsp;</p>

A new species of smooth-spored Inocybe from Coniferous forests of Pakistan

<p><em>Inocybe</em> <em>bhurbanensis</em> is described and illustrated as a new species from Himalayan Moist Temperate forests of Pakistan. It is characterized by fibrillose, conical to convex, umbonate, brown to dark brown pileus, non-pruinose, fibrillose stipe with whitish tomentum at the base and smooth basidiospores that are larger (9 × 5.2 µm) and thicker caulocystidia (up to 21 m) as compared to the sister species <em>Inocybe</em> <em>demetris</em>. Phylogenetic analyses of a nuclear rDNA region encompassing the internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 along with 5.8S rDNA (ITS) and the 28S rDNA D1–D2 domains (28S) also confirmed its novelty.</p>

Data of smoothed particle hydrodynamic giant impact simulations for the paper "A super-massive Neptune-sized planet"

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-023-06499-2</p> <p>The dataset comprises initial conditions and final snapshots of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations selected in the paper.</p> <p>All the simulations were performed using&nbsp;<a href="https://swift.com">SWIFT</a>&nbsp;with initial condtions generated using&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/srbonilla/WoMa">WoMa</a>. The planets are modeled with forsterite core (see&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/ststewart/aneos-forsterite-2019">Link</a>),&nbsp; water middle layer (see <a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2020A%26A...643A.105H/abstract">link</a>), and H&amp;He mixture atmosphere top layer (see <a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1980JGR....85..225H/abstract">link</a>).</p> <p>We simulated three different pre-impact compositions: water-rich by mass (22.5 % rock, 67.5 % water, 10 % H/He), equal rock and water (45 % rock, 45 % water, 10 % H/He), and rock-rich (67.5 % rock, 22.5 % water, 10 % H/He).&nbsp;These are located in the &quot;data.zip&quot; file under the folders &quot;water rich&quot;, &quot;equal_water_rock&quot;, and &quot;rock_rich&quot;, respectively. Data for: Modelling the surprising recolonisation of an understudied aquatic mammal in a highly urbanised area: Fortune favored the Smooth-coated otter in Singapore

<p>Ever-growing human activities present an active and continuing threat to many species throughout the world. Nevertheless, concerted conservation efforts in some regions have balanced these threats and allowed endangered species to recolonise former parts of their original ranges and reverse their decline. This is notably the case of the smooth-coated otter (<em>Lutrogale</em> <em>perspicillata</em>). In 1998, individuals returned to Singapore after more than a 20-year absence. In 2017, 79 otters were counted throughout the heavily urbanized city. Despite this comeback, the future of the species in Singapore is unclear. By collating information on the species' life history traits, we implemented a spatially explicit individual-based model. The model demonstrated that successful establishment of Singapore's population from the initial immigrants was highly uncertain. In 43% of cases, stochastic extinction occurred. From the 9% of model replicates that closely reproduced the observed colonisation history, projections showed that the population would reach close to 200 individuals in 50 years. This study successfully demonstrates the use of individual-based modelling to simulate the inherently stochastic recolonisation dynamics of an endangered species and predict its longer-term future. We discuss emerging issues that may arise from increasing negative interactions between otters and humans and the general challenges associated with rewilding highly urbanized environments. We stress the importance of long-term monitoring surveys and education campaigns to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts. With species and natural habitats increasingly threatened by our ever-growing human expansion, understanding the factors that allow human-dominated landscapes to be compatible with biodiversity is of the utmost importance.</p>
