SpectralWaste Dataset: Multimodal Data for Waste Sorting Automation

<p>This dataset contains multimodal images captured in a real waste processing facility specialized in plastics, cartons, and cans. The data was collected with a true-to-life prototype of the conveyor belt installed on the waste separation line, closely mimicking the actual installation. The setup has two synchronized cameras: a line-scan RGB camera (Teledyne DALSA Linea) and line-scan hyperspectral sensor (Specim FX17) that captures 224 contiguous spectral bands in a range from 900 to 1700 nm.</p> <p>The images are annotated for semantic segmentation with categories based on the requirements of the facility. Each one represents elements that commonly cause operational problems in recycling lines and impact the efficiency of the sorting process. Among these problems, machinery jams pose significant issues because they can cause complete stoppages in the process until the obstructing object is removed. The categories include: <em>film</em> and <em>basket</em>, large objects that can clog the conveyor belts as they are not easily breakable; <em>video tape </em>and <em>filament</em>, representing long objects prone to entangling with mechanical parts and requiring manual intervention; <em>trash bag</em>, which encompasses closed bags containing waste that need to be mechanically opened for further processing; and <em>cardboard</em>, paper objects whose recovery adds value by sending them to another recycling process.</p> <p>Our project page can be found at <a href="https://sites.google.com/unizar.es/spectralwaste">https://sites.google.com/unizar.es/spectralwaste</a>.</p>

Data for: Apparent stability masks underlying change in a mule deer herd with unmanaged chronic wasting disease

<p>The contagious prion disease "chronic wasting disease" (CWD) infects mule deer (<i>Odocoileus hemionus</i>) and related species. Unchecked epidemics raise ecological, socioeconomic, and public health concerns. Prion infection shortens a deer's lifespan, and when prevalence (proportion of adults infected) becomes sufficiently high CWD can affect herd dynamics. Understanding population responses over time is key to forecasting long-term impacts. Here we describe unexpected stability in prevalence and abundance in a mule deer herd where CWD has been left unmanaged. High apparent prevalence (~30%) since at least 2005 likely drove observed changes in the proportion and age distribution of wild-type native prion protein (<i>PRNP</i>) gene homozygotes among deer sampled. Predation by mountain lions (<i>Puma concolor</i>) may be helping keep CWD in check. Despite stable appearances, prion disease nonetheless impairs adult survival and likely resilience in this deer herd, limiting its potential for growth despite refuge from hunter harvest and favorable habitat and winter conditions.</p>

An efficient method for higher heating value estimation of municipal solid wastes electronic supplementary material

<p><span><span>To facilitate the disposal of municipal solid wastes (MSWs) via thermo-chemical approaches, the accurate measurement of MSWs' higher heating value (HHV) plays a key role. This study aims to forecast the HHV of MSWs using the optimized multi-variate grey model (OBGM (1, N)) due to its high accuracy under the condition of scanty data. Results show that POBGM (1, 5) with proximate analysis data is the most accurate model with the least error of 5.41% MAPE (mean absolute percentage error). This model also illustrates that ash is the most important factor affecting HHV due to its significant fraction in MSWs, followed by volatiles, fixed carbon and water contents, respectively. With prediction interval (PI) method, most of the actual data can be included by using the 95% confidence intervals.</span></span></p>

Ammonia recovery from food waste digestate using solar heat-assisted stripping-absorption

<p>The highest costs of stripping-absorption processes for ammonia recovery are related to energy (for heating and air supply) and chemical addition (for pH adjustment). In this paper, a simplified system that used no chemicals, and a renewable source of energy for heating, was tested to recover nitrogen as ammonium sulfate from food waste digestate. pH adjustment was achieved by CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;stripping, and vacuum tube solar collectors were used to provide heating. The effect of different temperatures (25&nbsp;&deg;C and 45&nbsp;&deg;C) and gas to liquid ratios (1700 and 2600) on ammonia removal and recovery were assessed. Ammonia removal efficiencies higher than 91% were achieved for all evaluated experimental conditions. The solar heater showed adequate capacity to increase the temperature of the liquid digestate by 21&nbsp;&deg;C and maintain the temperature at 45&nbsp;&deg;C throughout the experiment. Tests carried out at 45&nbsp;&deg;C achieved the highest ammonia removal efficiency (98%) at the lowest evaluated G/L ratio (1700). Better absorption efficiencies could potentially have been achieved if lower inlet airflow rates and packing material had been used in the absorption column.</p>

Cultivation of the PHB-producing cyanobacterium Synechococcus leopoliensis in a pilot-scale open system using nitrogen from waste streams

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>The cultivation of PHB-producing cyanobacteria is a promising approach to obtain the raw material for bio-based and biodegradable plastics. To commercialise photoautotrophic PHB production, the cultivation needs to be scaled up in open cultivation systems and to improve sustainability of the process, nutrients must be obtained from waste streams. Different PHB-producing cyanobacteria were compared in laboratory-scale cultivations using either water from recirculating aquaculture systems or pre-processed liquid digestate as nutrient sources. The species <em>Synechococcus leopoliensis</em> was cultivated in an open thin-layer photobioreactor (18 m<sup>2</sup>, 200 L), were growth in mineral Z-medium was again compared to said waste streams. Cultivation in mineral medium resulted in both the highest final biomass yield (6 g L<sup>-1</sup>) and productivity (0.7 g L<sup>-1</sup> d<sup>-1</sup>). Both waste stream-based media showed lower biomass yields and productivities (2 g L<sup>-1 </sup>and 0.25–0.3 g L<sup>-1</sup> d<sup>-1</sup>). However, due to differences in the cultivation conditions (e.g., temperature, nutrient supply), final biomass yield and productivity do not represent the performance of the cultivations adequately. Relative parameters such as nitrogen and energy conversion ratios indicate that cultivation with aquaculture water suffered from insufficient nitrogen supply to the culture, whereas the use pre-processed liquid digestate resulted in a substantial loss of nitrogen due to volatilization. All cultivations in the open system were continued in the laboratory, where cultures were starved for ten days under nutrient-depleted conditions (without nitrogen, phosphorus, or both). While PHB accumulation occurred, concentrations were comparatively low (&lt; 1 %<sub>dw</sub>). The comparison of the results suggests that PHB yields were influenced more by the initial cultivation condition than by the specific type of nutrient depletion. Thus, while the cultivation with waste streams in an open system is feasible, environmental parameters seem to influence PHB yields considerably and must be considered for the optimisation of the complete process.</span></p>
