DeepCCZ cruise: western Clarion-Clipperton Zone CTD cast and bottle sample physicochemical datasets

DeepCCZ was a cruise to the three western Areas of Particular Environmental Interest (APEIs) in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the North Pacific Gyre in May-June, 2018. The primary goal of this cruise was to assess overall biodiversity across as many trophic levels as feasible in these APEIs, both to provide baseline data before the potential start of mining activity in the region and to assist with assessments as to the representativity of the APEI network. A secondary goal was to contrast biodiversity associated with abyssal plains and neighboring seamounts in this region. This dataset contains water column biogeochemical data collected with a CTD package mounted on a sampling rosette, as well as bottle data from samples collected at sea and analyzed in on-shore laboratories.

Bottle data, as well as cast locations and CTD results, are collected in the .xlsx file. Processed individual CTD cast results, in .cnv format, are also archived.

Contact for questions about this dataset: Emma Wear, ekwear.oceans@gmail.com

2017 Microbial Ecology of the Surface Ocean - SCOPE, Downcast CTD Data

This dataset consists of measurements taken at various depths in the water column from CTD sensors attached to a CTD rosette on the MESO-SCOPE cruise in 2017. Mesoscale eddies affect the variability of ocean ecosystems through different dynamics, but an exhaustive description of their influence on the plankton community is still missing, partly due to the complex physical-biological interaction taking place inside the eddies. One of the most well known effects of mesoscale eddies is the vertical displacement of water in their interior due to the geostrophic balance with the eddy circular motion. Since eddies of different polarity displace water in opposite directions, their impact on pelagic ecosystems is postulated to be very different. Based on this information, one of the objectives of the MESO-SCOPE expedition was to study a mesoscale dipole, i.e. a system composed of adjacent cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies. The MESO-SCOPE (Microbial Ecology of the Surface Ocean - Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology) expedition collected oceanographic observations in the region north of the Hawaiian Islands with the aim of identifying the impact of mesoscale eddies on the ecosystem of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The expedition was funded by the Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology (SCOPE) and hosted on the research vessel Kilo Moana between June 26 and July 15 2017, leaving from and returning to the port of Honolulu. Scientists from eight countries, representing eleven SCOPE laboratories, participated in the MESO-SCOPE expedition and contributed their expertise in research areas as ocean biogeochemistry, molecular biology, bio-optics, plankton taxonomy, microbiology, and ecology.

Gradients 4 - TN397 - HPLC - CTD

Cruise Name: Gradients 4 , TN397

Vessel: R/V Thompson

Funding: Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology (SCOPE)

Dataset description:

This dataset was collected on the R/V Thompson during the Gradients IV cruise which departed from San Diego, CA and ended in Honolulu, HI. A transect was performed on the 140 degree longitude line from roughly 19 degrees N to 2.5 degrees S before heading to Honolulu. Samples were processed to detect and quantify phytoplankton pigments using a modified version of the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method of Wright et al. (1991) as described by Bidigare et al. (2005). HPLC samples were collected from CTD niskin bottles and filtered onto Whatman GF/F filters and stored at -80°C until analysis. Filters were extracted in 100% acetone for 24 h at 4°C. Extracts were processed in reverse-phase on a 250 mm C18 column using a Waters separations module and photodiode detector array. Empower chromatography software was used for integration and pigment quantification. The instrument was calibrated using chlorophyll a from Anacystis nidulans (Sigma USA) and mixed pigment standards were obtained from DHI in Denmark. Timestamps are in UTC time.

Gradients 5 - Fluorometric Chlorophyll from CTD

This dataset was collected on the R/V Thompson during the Gradients V cruise which departed from San Diego, CA and ended in Honolulu, HI. A transect was performed on the 140 degree longitude line from roughly 16 degrees N to 4 degrees S before heading to Honolulu. Fluorometric Chlorophyll were collected from the R/V Thompson's CTD/Rosette system and filtered at low vacuum through a glass fiber filter. Samples were then frozen and stored in foil until analysis. Post cruise, the filters were extracted using 90% acetone for a total of 48 hours in a -20°C freezer, covered to prevent the photodegradation of pigments. Samples were then run on a Turner 10-AU Fluorometer. Data were corrected for average glass fiber filter blank values and when available is reported as the average of duplicate samples. Time in UTC.

PARAGON 2 - KM2209 - Underway CTD

These Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology (SCOPE) data products were produced by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa with support from the Simons Foundation.

This dataset was collected on the R/V Kilo Moana during the PARAGON 2 cruise which departed from and returned to Honolulu, HI. The cruise track was Lagrangian, following free-floating arrays deployed in a chlorophyll bloom feature. Underway CTD profiles were conducted with the ship moving less than 8 knots by dropping a probe over the stern. The data were binned to every 2 meters after calculating depth from pressure and latitude. A negative lag was applied to the temperature data to align it with the conductivity data and avoid spikes in salinity. Chlorophyll and fluorescence are intercalibrated with the shipboard CTD (scaled against Winkler oxygen and chloropigments). This intercalibration used a linear regression for the upper 200m in both cases, but for oxygen the intercept was forced to zero.

CTD Hydrography HOT v2022

“The majority of our sampling effort, approximately 60-72 h per standard HOT cruise, is spent at Station ALOHA. High vertical resolution environmental data are collected with a Sea-Bird CTD having external temperature (T), conductivity (C), dissolved oxygen (DO) and fluorescence (F) sensors and an internal pressure (P) sensor. A Sea-Bird 24-place carousel and an aluminum rosette that is capable of supporting 24 12-L PVC bottles are used to obtain water samples from desired depths. The CTD and rosette are deployed on a 3-conductor cable allowing for real-time display of data and for tripping the bottles at specific depths of interest. The CTD system takes 24 samples s-1 and the raw data are stored both on the computer and, for redundancy, on VHS-format video tapes. In February 2006, before cruise 178, we replaced our 24 aging 12-L PVC rosette bottles with new 12-L bottles fabricated at the University of Hawaii Engineering Support Facility, using plans and specifications from John Bullister (PMEL).” Time is in GMT.

https://www.soest.hawaii.edu/HOT_WOCE/intro.html
