Data from: Incidence of cancer-associated thromboembolism in Japanese gastric and colorectal cancer patients receiving chemotherapy: a single-institutional retrospective cohort analysis (Sapporo CAT study)

Objective: Few data regarding the incidence of cancer-associated thromboembolism (TE) are available for Asian populations. We investigated the incidence of TE (TEi) and its risk factors among gastric and colorectal cancer (GCC) patients who received chemotherapy in a daily practice setting. Design: A retrospective cohort study. Setting: A single institutional study that used data from Sapporo City General Hospital, Japan, on patients treated between January 2008 and May 2015. Participants: Five hundred Japanese GCC patients who started chemotherapy from January 2008 to May 2015. Primary and secondary outcome measures: TE was diagnosed by reviewing all the reports of contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) performed during the follow-up period. All types of thrombosis detected by CT or additional imaging tests, such as venous TE, arterial TE, and cerebral infarction, were defined as TE. Medical records of all identified patients were reviewed and potential risk factors for TE including clinicopathological backgrounds were collected. We defined the following patients as 'active cancer'; patients with unresectable advanced GCC, cancer recurrence during or after completing adjuvant (Adj) chemotherapy, and/or presence of other malignant tumours. Results: Of the 500 patients, 70 patients (14.0%) developed TE during the follow-up period. TEi was 9.2% and 17.3% in gastric and colorectal cancer patients, 18.1% and 3.5% in active and non-active cancer patients, and 24.0% and 12.9% in multiple and single primary, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that colorectal cancer (odds ratio [OR], 2.371; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.328 to 4.233), active cancer (OR 7.593; 95% CI 2.950 to 19.543), and multiple primary (OR 2.527; 95% CI 1.189 to 5.370) were independently associated with TEi. Conclusion: TEi was 14.0% among Japanese GCC patients received chemotherapy, and was significantly higher among patients with colorectal cancer, active cancer, and multiple primary than among those with gastric cancer, non-active cancer, and single primary, respectively.

Data from: Fungal disease incidence along tree diversity gradients depends on latitude in European forests

European forests host a diversity of tree species that are increasingly threatened by fungal pathogens, which may have cascading consequences for forest ecosystems and their functioning. Previous experimental studies suggest that foliar and root pathogen abundance and disease severity decrease with increasing tree species diversity, but evidences from natural forests are rare. Here, we tested whether foliar fungal disease incidence was negatively affected by tree species diversity in different forest types across Europe. We measured the foliar fungal disease incidence on 16 different tree species in 209 plots in six European countries, representing a forest-type gradient from the Mediterranean to boreal forests. Forest plots of single species (monoculture plots) and those with different combinations of two to five tree species (mixed species plots) were compared. Specifically, we analyzed the influence of tree species richness, functional type (conifer vs. broadleaved) and phylogenetic diversity on overall fungal disease incidence. The effect of tree species richness on disease incidence varied with latitude and functional type. Disease incidence tended to increase with tree diversity, in particular in northern latitudes. Disease incidence decreased with tree species richness in conifers, but not in broadleaved trees. However, for specific damage symptoms, no tree species richness effects were observed. Although the patterns were weak, susceptibility of forests to disease appears to depend on the forest site and tree type.

CarcSeq measurement of lung cancer driver mutations predicts mouse strain- and sex-related incidence of spontaneous lung neoplasia

New incidence or recurrence hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in genotype 4 hepatitis C virus treated with sofosbuvir/daclatasvir with or without ribavirin

<p><span><b>Background</b>: Several studies have resulted in controversial data about the recurrence or new incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with hepatitis C who were treated with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs).  </span></p> <p><span><b>Aim:</b> This observational study aimed to assess the occurrence rate of HCC in patients who developed a sustained virological response (SVR).. </span></p> <p><span><b>Methods</b>: A six-month prospective study was done at the National Hepatology and Tropical Medicine Research Institute [NHTMRI] in Cairo, Egypt on 150 chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients treated with sofosbuvir and daclatasvir with or without ribavirin. Patients were assigned into two groups according to their laboratory values to either receive sofosbuvir/daclatasvir and ribavirin (S/D/R) or receive only sofosbuvir/daclatasvir (S/D). The main outcome measure was the occurrence of HCC.</span></p> <p><span><b>Results</b>: SVR-12 was 100%. 8.5% of patients developed HCC in the S/D/R group, while 0% in the S/D group.</span></p> <p><span><b>Conclusion:</b>  New incidence or recurrence of HCC may occur in CHC genotype 4 cirrhotic patients receiving sofosbuvir/daclatasvir and ribavirin (difficult to treat) although achieving SVR. The cause of HCC development in this study is cirrhosis, not the administered DAAs.</span></p>

Age dependent incidence rates (2)

<p>Figure 4 shows the sex-specific logarithmic incidence depending on age (50 to 90 years) for the period from 2011 to 2019. Across all evaluated years we found both, an age-dependent, exponential increase in the incidence rates for both sexes and a distinct increase in incidences in the young age groups of women (about tenfold increase in incidences up to 2019) . Up to the age of about 70 years, men show a higher incidence rate for long-term care than women in 2011. For people older than 70 years, the ratio changes, with a higher incidence of needing long-term care for women than for men. This point of intersection of the incidence rates was evident in all plots of the time course (table 2). We see a left shift, to younger age groups, between 2011 and 2019 and from this age (intersection point) onwards the incidence for women exceeds that of men. In addition to that, the incidence in the scenario with higher mortality rate ratios (scenario 1) is always above the curve from the scenario with lower mortality rate ratios (scenario 2). We also see that the gap between the incidences increases with age.</p>
