Dataset of the first and second student study of eye tracking with Feynman diagrams
<p>This dataset is part of my thesis "The Educational Use of Feynman DIagrams: Opportunities, Challenges, Practices".</p> <p>It comprises of questionnaire answers, as well as quantitative and qualitative eye tracking data produced by students working on <a href="../records/11501410">this learning material</a>.</p> <p>The file "Questionnaire-answers.xlsx" contains answers to questionnaires used in the second student study, while the file "hssip-c.xlsxl" contains the answers to the cognitive load questionnaire used in the first student study.</p> <p>Scripts for the analysis of the questionnaires can be found <a href="../records/11519651">here</a>.</p> <p>The thesis with all relevant information is published <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.53846/goediss-10576">here</a>.</p>
Metagenomics education in a modular CURE format positively affects students' scientific discovery perception and data analytical skills
<p>The targeted metagenomics study performed by Pollock et al. <em>(Pollock 2018)</em> was part of the Global Coral Microbiome Project <em>(Vega Thurber Lab 2014)</em>. Since the original publication of Pollock et al. <em>(Pollock 2018) </em>was written for a highly specialized academic public, we provided Bsc. students with a short introduction of the paper and guided them through the metadata table stored in the <em>gcmp16S_map_r25.txt </em>file under the <em>GCMP Australia sequence data, OTU tables, and metadata</em> folder (<a href="https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.c.3855466.v2">https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.c.3855466.v2</a>).</p> <p>In order to process the fastq-files and obtain OTU tables, a custom-made pipeline on a Galaxy instance <em>(Galaxy Community)</em> was used. This pipeline contained data analytical tools obtained from the Naturalis Biodiversity Center GitHub environment (<a href="https://github.com/naturalis">https://github.com/naturalis</a>). In order to align with the newest Galaxy best practices, we updated the tools and links to the original as well as the updated GitHub and toolshed versions are included in the references list.</p> <p>The names of the original raw fastq-files contain many dots which can hamper file-type recognition during downstream analyses in Galaxy. Therefore, prior to distributing the fastq-files to the students, these names were renamed using the ManageZIP tool <em>(The BLFS Development Team 1999-2023)</em>. Dots were replaced with underscores, with an exception made for the last 2 file type extension dots. For example, the file name <em>E1.2.Tur.pelt.1.20140814.M_S71_L001_R1_001.fastq.gz</em> was changed into <em>E1_2_Tur_pelt_1_20140814_M_S71_L001_R1_001_1.fastq.gz</em>. Similarly, the filenames in the metadata table were adjusted accordingly. The total collection of renamed file names is available through this zenodo repository as wel as the accompanying metadata file.</p>
Dataset of Israeli-Jews, Palestinians, Israeli-Arabs, Americans and Cypriot students who played Fact Finders and PeaceMaker (examining game performance)
<p><strong>Serious Games, Players' Characteristics and Game Performance</strong></p> <p>The study examines the impact of players' gender, religiosity, political orientation, and nationality on game performance, focusing on two games for social impact revolving around intractable conflicts: PeaceMaker (Israeli-Palestinian conflict) and Fact Finders (Cyprus Conflict). Using questionnaires, we conducted a case study with 168 undergraduates voluntarily playing the two games and reporting their final scores. The participants included Israeli-Jew, Israeli-Arab, Palestinian, American, and Cypriot undergraduate students, differentiating between direct parties and third parties to the conflicts.</p>
Gamification of Student Development Projects in Software Engineering Education - Master's Thesis Dataset
<p>This dataset contains all questionnaire results of the Master's Thesis <em>Gamification of Student Development Projects in Software Engineering Education</em>. The thesis will be linked to this set as soon as it is completed and publically available.</p> <p>In total, five questionnaires were conducted. To analyze users and requirements, a questionnaire with students and project supervisors was conducted. The implemented tool was evaluated using a pre-, mid-, and post-study questionnaire. This dataset contains a folder for each questionnaire including results in CSV format, results in HTML format, which is more human readable, and the questionnaire in PDF format. Due to the used survey tool, <em>lamapoll</em>, some parts of the files are in German. However, the questions and responses are all in English.</p> <p>Additionally, the scripts folder contains the Python scripts that were used to produce the graphics of the thesis. The Python libraries <code>matplotlib</code>, <code>pandas</code>, <code>scipy</code>, <code>numpy</code>, and <code>plot_likert</code> are required to run the scripts. Some of them use the two provided files <code>evalutation_concat_raw_excel.csv</code>, which is a concatenation of the results of the three evaluation questionnaires, and <code>sprint_stats.csv</code>, which contains statistics of the sprints relevant to the user study.</p>
The Use of Questions in Fostering Critical Thinking Among State Registered Nursing Students in Fako Division of Cameroon
<p>Although critical thinking has become a core competency in the practice of nursing and a major apprehension of undergraduate nursing courses, observably, too many nursing graduates are unable to think critically. This has led to the provision of poor-quality care to patients. How nursing students are taught to acquire critical thinking remains unclear and is a call for concern. This study therefore sought to examine teacher’s use of the questioning method in fostering critical thinking in State Registered Nursing (SRN) students in Fako Division of Cameroon. An exploratory sequential research design with the collection of both qualitative and quantitative data for triangulation was adopted for the study. Data was collected via interviews with 16 teachers and 4 focus group discussions with year two students from the selected SRN schools. 42 teachers and 105 year two students were also administered questionnaires. 24 classroom observations were carried out to observe teachers’ questioning skills and finally 205 examination questions were analysed using Blooms taxonomy. Thematic analysis was used for qualitative data while quantitative data was analysed using the statistical package for social sciences version 20.0 for descriptive statistics. The age range for students was between 18 to 26 years and a majority 92 (87.62%) were females while a majority of the teachers 15 (35.72%), had a work experience of 2-5 years and 6- 10 years. The major theme that emerged from the interviews was ‘question and answers” and the categories included “selected students’ response” and “insufficient motivation”. Quantitative data analysis revealed several practice gaps such as 72 (68.5%) of the students disagreed that teachers do not focus questions on particular students, while 70 (66.6%) disagreed that teachers allowed adequate time for them to reflect before responding to questions. The findings also revealed that majority of the written examination questions 199 (97.07%) fell under the category of lower thinking order skills. Teachers do not use the questioning method appropriately, hence cannot effectively foster critical thinking in nursing students. The organisation of training workshops on how to use questions to foster CT is therefore necessary.</p>

Data set from the design of experiment assessment rubric, from university students / future teachers
<p>Using an assessment rubric comprising three levels of success, we evaluated six aspects of designing an experiment, which we call dimensions. This way, specific challenges were identified in two of the dimensions: forming a hypothesis and manipulating the experimental variables, where students often failed to succeed and get lower scores.</p> <p>The data presented here were collected from four (4) diagnostic worksheets, which were made available to students at the beginning of the semester, where a theoretical introduction to the course is given, with reference to learning theories and their use in the teaching of Physics. Therefore, data were collected prior to discussions about the inquiry-based approach, experimental investigations, and the scientific content, such as the concepts and phenomena mentioned in the worksheets. </p> <p>For the present study, we slightly modified and used a rubric that has been proposed to assess the DoE by primary and secondary school students (Lefkos et al., 2011).
