<p>Models for Building Relationships and Refining Approaches for Collaborating with Indigenous Communities: Reporting on Five Years of Online Work with the Nuer.</p> <p>Presentation given by Tatiana Reid at the Language Documentation and Archiving conference on the 5. October 2022 at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.</p> <p>I report on my experience of working with the Nuer-speaking community. Nuer is a little studied West Nilotic language of South Sudan and Ethiopia. Over the past five years I have carried description, documentation and language development exclusively online through social media such as Messenger and WhatsApp, and more recently, via Zoom.</p> <p>I will highlight various aspects of this mode of work, showing what is possible to achieve working remotely and the practicalities of doing so. These include, but are not limited to: utilising google documents when working on recorded narratives with reference speakers; and collecting data using a hybrid mode where the researcher (online) and a community member (in-person) conduct interviews with speakers producing high quality recordings. I will also draw on my experience of outsourced documentation – where audio and video recordings are made by local organisations in East Africa. I will touch on the experience (together with the colleagues at the University of Surrey) of working towards literacy development. This work involved creating databases that the community members populated with data collected via our ‘Nuer Lexicon’ Facebook group; and running an online Nuer literacy development workshops attended by over 30 community members from South Sudan, Ethiopia and from around the world.</p> <p>I claim that the prerequisite for conducting remote work with a language community is the collaborative approach between the researchers and the speakers of the language, which places greater emphasis on the 1) ability of the community members to to carry out data collection and processing and 2) continuity. My experience shows that ELDP/ELAR’s advice for field linguists to strengthen capacity building within language communities is gaining even more relevance in the predominantly virtually connected world.</p>

Sociodemographic and Work-Related Factors Associated with Burnout Syndrome in Healthcare Professionals
<p><span>Background: Burnout syndrome, intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, has profoundly impacted healthcare professionals' mental health globally. This study in Peru aimed to investigate sociodemographic and work-related factors associated with burnout dimensions among healthcare workers. Methods: Employing a cross-sectional predictive design, this study encompassed 1,844 healthcare professionals across three major hospitals in Peru. A carefully selected sample of 334 participants, ranging in age from 22 to 68 years and including both genders, was studied. Data collection involved a comprehensive sociodemographic work form and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), which is recognized for its robust psychometric properties. The research included thorough psychometric, descriptive, and inferential analyses, using linear regression to test various predictive models. Results: The study found that emotional exhaustion was significantly associated with several factors, including employment status (R² = 0.010), marital status (R² = 0.003), and length of service (R² = 0.015). Depersonalization showed a significant correlation with gender (R² = 0.015) and the amount of daily patient contact. Personal accomplishment was notably influenced by gender (R² = 0.039) and length of service (R² = 0.025). Conclusions: The research identified several key factors contributing to burnout, notably being female, having a contracted employment status, shorter service duration (specifically 6 to 10 years), and engaging in 1 to 6 hours of patient contact per day. These insights are crucial for understanding burnout in healthcare settings and underscore the need for targeted interventions and support strategies for healthcare professionals.</span></p>
GENDER DIVERSITY AND ITS IMPACT ON THE WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN THE WORKFORCE: WITH REFERENCE TO INDIAN CORPORATE SECTOR. (HRM: PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN IN THE WORK FORCE
<p>Gender roles have been two different sized fruits on the same tree branch since olden times. <br>The distinguished rule book for both males and females which had been followed for since <br>long still has its effects widely seen in the Indian corporate sector also. With the recurrent <br>fluctuation experienced in the women participation in the Indian workforce, the main pulling <br>back factor always has been Gender Diversity issues. There are many workplace factors <br>which infuse more power to this aspect called gender diversity; some of which are out of <br>one’s control while many of which are manageable. These factors include salary range, job <br>positions, promotional opportunities, workplace behavior and many more. The list is endless, <br>but the impact of all the gamut of such aspects has to be borne by the female employees. This <br>paper is a descriptive analysis on the effect of various factors on the gender diversity issues in <br>Indian Corporate sector. Secondary data has been used in order to correlate the factors like <br>salary, promotional opportunities, and other factors in the corporate sector with the gender <br>diversity issues. The statistical evidences have been depicted with the help of graphs and pie <br>charts which would contribute in making the whole situation of diversity issues more crystal <br>clear and transparent for the readers. The paper is an attempt towards finding the in-depth <br>causes for the ups and downs in the women participation in the nations’ workforce and also to <br>bring about a change in the current plight of female workers in Indian Corporate sector</p>

Dissociable neuronal substrates of feature attention and working memory
<p>Attention and working memory (WM) are distinct cognitive functions, yet given their close interactions, it is often assumed that they share the same neuronal mechanisms. We show that in macaques performing a WM-guided feature attention task, the activity of most neurons in areas middle temporal (MT), medial superior temporal (MST), lateral intraparietal (LIP), and posterior lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC-p) displays attentional modulation or WM coding, not both. One area thought to play a role in both functions is LPFC-p. To test this, we optogenetically inactivated LPFC-p bilaterally during different task periods. Attention period inactivation reduced attentional modulation in LPFC-p, MST, and LIP neurons, and impaired task performance. In contrast, WM period inactivation did not affect attentional modulation or performance and minimally affected WM coding. Our results suggest that feature attention and WM have dissociable neuronal substrates and that LPFC-p plays a critical role in feature attention but not in WM.</p>

Eye tracking data set of academics making an omelette: An egg-breaking work
<p>Just as there are numerous ways to cook an egg, there are numerous ways to recreate a YouTube video of cooking an omelette. We created a dataset of 10 academics replicating a viral video of making an omelette. We evaluated the saccade behavior during the varying subtasks and found differences related to the actions (whisking, sprinkling, etc.) and the objects (eggs, butter, plate, etc.). The high cost of movement in an arid working landscape for an endangered amphibian
<p>Connectivity is essential for the maintenance of genetic diversity and stability of wildlife populations. Drought and changing precipitation regimes have caused natural aquatic amphibian breeding habitats to disappear or become isolated and have led to the replacement of natural surface water with artificial livestock water tanks. Terrestrial movement is the only means of responding to aquatic threats in arid landscapes and to allow population connectivity. Aridity may present an impenetrable barrier in hydrologically fragmented environments. We used a facultatively paedomorphic and federally endangered salamander to assess the challenges of movement across arid working lands. Sonoran tiger salamanders (<em>Ambystoma mavortium stebbinsi</em>) are endemic to the San Rafael Valley of southeastern Arizona, United States of America, where they depend on livestock water tanks as breeding habitat. The ecology of this species' metamorphs outside of stock tanks is virtually unknown. To assess survival on the landscape during terrestrial movement we used radio transmitters to track 78 adult metamorphosed salamanders over two years. Sonoran tiger salamanders moved up to 1 km from the tank edge, and average distances moved of over 400 m were higher than most <em>Ambystoma </em>species. However, during the study period, none reached neighboring stock tanks. We found high mortality due to predation and desiccation. Individuals that dispersed to terrestrial habitat in summer survived longer than individuals that dispersed in spring. High mortality suggests terrestrial movement is exceptionally risky and may contribute to isolated subpopulations and elevated levels of inbreeding. Conservation actions that improve and maintain artificial aquatic habitats as well as increase connectivity may improve long-term management for pond-breeding amphibians in arid regions.</p>
