Synthesis of Bi2S3 thin films based on pulse-plating bismuth nanocrystallines and its photoelectrochemical properties

<p>The solubility of Bi<sup>3+</sup> in aqueous solution is an important factor that limits the fabrication of high quality Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films. In order to find a low–cost method to manufacture high quality Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films, we are reporting the preparation of the Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films based on pulse-plating method in this paper for the first time. The nano-bismuth particles were obtained by electroplating on fluorine doped SnO<sub>2</sub> (FTO) coated conducting glass substrates with saturated bismuth potassium citrate solution as the electroplating bath, and then it was put into a muffle furnace to oxidize. Finally, the thin films depositing on FTO glass substrates were put into the thioacetamide solution for vulcanization. In the end, the Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films were successfully prepared on FTO glass substrates. Different characterization techniques were used to characterize the structure, morphology and photoelectrochemical properties of the prepared thin films. The test results revealed that we used this method can synthesize the high quality of Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films, thus the Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> materials synthesized through this method are promising candidates in photoelectrochemical application.</p>

Influence of annealing atmosphere on performances of CIGS film by sputtering from quaternary targets

<p>Quaternary sputtering without additional selenization is a low-cost alternative method for the preparation of Cu(InGa)Se<sub>2</sub> (CIGS) thin film for photovoltaics. However, the device efficiency without selenization is much lower than that with selenization. To illuminate the issue, we compared the properties of absorbers including the morphology, depth profile, composition, electrical properties and the recombination mechanism comprehensively. The results revealed that the superficial Se of CIGS film annealed in Se-free atmosphere is less than that annealed in Se-containing atmosphere,and the loss of Se reduced the carrier concentration and enhanced the resistivity of CIGS film. Besides, the loss of Se caused the dominant recombination mechanism to be CIGS/CdS interface recombination. The increase of interface recombination was considered to be the reason for the reduced efficiency of the device annealed in Se-free atmosphere.</p>

Data from: The third dimension: a novel set-up for filming coelacanths in their natural environment

Here, we describe a novel design to obtain three-dimensional data on the movements of aquatic organisms at depths of up to 140 m. The set-up consists of two synchronized high-speed cameras fixed to two articulated arms. The set-up was successfully used to film and quantify the locomotion of coelacanths Latimeria chalumnae living at a depth of about 120 m in Sodwana Bay, South Africa. As an example, the detailed motion of the dorsal fin is presented here. This set-up can be used for any underwater applications that require synchronized video recordings of medium- to large-sized animals.

Data from: Study on the optimization of the deposition rate of planetary GaN-MOCVD films based on CFD simulation and the corresponding surface model

Metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) is a key technique for fabricating GaN thin film structures for light-emitting and semiconductor laser diodes. Film uniformity is an important index to measure equipment performance and chip processes. This paper introduces a method to improve the quality of thin films by optimizing the rotation speed of different substrates of a model consisting of a planetary with seven 6-inch wafers for the planetary GaN-MOCVD. A numerical solution to the transient state at low pressure is obtained using computational fluid dynamics. To evaluate the role of the different zone speeds on the growth uniformity, single factor analysis is introduced. The results show that the growth rate and uniformity are strongly related to the rotational speed. Next, a response surface model was constructed by using the variables and the corresponding simulation results. The optimized combination of the matching of different speeds is also proposed as a useful reference for applications in industry, obtained by a response surface model and genetic algorithm with a balance between the growth rate and the growth uniformity. This method can save time, and the optimization can obtain the most uniform and highest thin film quality.

Reproduction, growth and oxidative stress in the earthworm Eisenia andrei exposed to conventional and biodegradable mulching film microplastics

<p>Dataset on Earthworm (<em>Eisenia andrei</em>) exposed to <span>of low-density polyethylene microplastics (PE-MP) and polybutylene adipate terephthalate biodegradable microplastics (PBAT-BD-MP) originating from mulching films. The study utilized seven concentrations (0, 0.005, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 5% w/w) in five replicates. Survival, growth, and oxidative stress responses of the earthworms were analysed after four weeks of exposure. Measured biomarker responses were superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase, glutathione, and lipid peroxidation. Additionally, the Integrated Biomarker Response Index (IBR) was conducted to assess the overall oxidative stress status of the earthworms. The number of biomass of the juveniles were recorded after four additional weeks. The total length of the experiment was eight weeks. Soil water holding capacity (WHC) was analysed in the beginning of the experiment and soil pH in the beginning and end of the experiment. The study was conducted at the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) Under project PAPILLONS (EU Horizon).&nbsp;</span></p>

Ductile, High-Lignin-Content Thermoset Films and Coatings

<p>Although lignin is a highly abundant and renewable polymer with very interesting properties, the preparation of high-lignin-content materials is challenging due to the brittleness and poor reactivity of lignin. Herein, high lignin content films and coatings were prepared by a simple and efficient method. A glyoxylic acid lignin (GA lignin), rich in carboxylic acid groups and hence highly reactive towards epoxy cross-linkers, was reacted with poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether and glycerol diglycidyl ether cross-linkers to achieve freestanding films containing up to 70 wt% lignin, and covalently attached surface coatings containing up to 90 wt% lignin. These films and coatings, potentially 100% biobased, show high antioxidant activity and UV barrier property, still maintaining good visible transparency. They hence are&nbsp;promising for application as sustainable food packaging films.</p>

1922 Film Industry Trade Press Corpus

<div> <p>For the first half of the twentieth century, no American industry boasted a more motley and prolific trade press than the movie business—a cutthroat landscape that set the stage for battle by ink. In 1930, Martin Quigley, publisher of <em>Exhibitors Herald</em>, conspired with Hollywood studios to eliminate all competing trade papers, yet this attempt and each one thereafter collapsed. Exploring the communities of exhibitors and creative workers that constituted key subscribers, <em>Ink-Stained Hollywood</em> tells the story of how a heterogeneous trade press triumphed by appealing to the foundational aspects of industry culture—taste, vanity, partisanship, and exclusivity. In captivating detail, Eric Hoyt chronicles the histories of well-known trade papers (<em>Variety, Motion Picture Herald</em>) alongside important yet forgotten publications (<em>Film Spectator</em>, <em>Film Mercury</em>, and <em>Camera!</em>), and challenges the canon of film periodicals, offering new interpretative frameworks for understanding print journalism's relationship with the motion picture industry and its continued impact on creative industries today.</p> <p>We selected the year 1922, with an emphasis on July 1922, for two chief reasons. First, the MHDL had already digitized a wide cross-section of trade papers from that year, including—appropriately for this book—several published outside of the United States. Second, we knew from Eric's earlier research that there was a great deal of competition within the American film industry's trade press during this period.</p> <p>In 1922, <em>Variety</em> and the Chicago-based <em>Exhibitors Herald</em>, were pursuing strategies to grow their readership and influence within the industry, emphasizing independence, integrity, and uniqueness as distinguishing factors. During the following year, <em>Exhibitors Herald</em> created the '"Herald Only' Club"—emphasizing the loyalty of subscribers who exclusively wrote into <em>Exhibitors Herald</em> and read the paper, to the exclusion of its rivals (Hartman, Rea). Given the competitive bent of the 1920s trade press, how distinct was each publication? Would the "'Herald Only' Club" have any factual grounding once the word patterns, sentences, and page structures were analyzed at scale?</p> <p>In addition to the above-mentioned trade papers, we included 16 additional unique journals. Our corpus included fan magazines (<em>Photoplay</em>, <em>Shadowland</em>,<em> </em>and <em>The Picturegoer</em>), a technical journal (<em>American Cinematographer</em>), English language trade papers published outside the U.S. (<em>Canadian Moving Picture Digest </em>and <em>The Film Renter and Moving Picture News</em>), and studio generated publicity (<em>Universal Weekly</em> and <em>Paramount Pep</em>).</p> <p>This dataset is comprised of the scans of the trade papers we analyzed, as well as a zip archive of the code we used to do the similarity analysis.</p> </div> <div> <div> <div> <div> <div> <div> <div> <div> <div> <div> <p>C.M.
